This invention refers to improvements in closures for metallic barrels or containers, and the principal object of the invention is to provide an air and liquid tight seal for the central opening in the closure, which may be easily placed and removed.
Closures for metallic barrels or containers generally consist of three pieces, namely one piece which passes through the cleanoutopening in the upper wall of the container and is kept in position by a plate, which rests on the outer surface of the upper wall of the container, and the first mentioned piece is moved into close contact with the inner surface of the upper wall of the container to close the cleanout-opening in same. The first mentioned piece is provided with a central bore tapering toward the end disposedin the interior of barrel 1 and through which the contents of the container are drawn. The present invention refers to improvements in the closing means for said central perforation. i
In the accompanying drawing I have shown such a combination of closing means for the cleanout-opening, and for the central perforation for'extraction of the con tents of the container.
In the only figure of the drawing, 1 indicates the upper wall of the barrel, or container; 2 indicates the cleanout-opening; 3 indicates the main piece of the closure, which is provided with a central bore 4. The principal piece 3 is provided with an exterior flange 6 on its upper end, and the central bore is provided with an interior flange 5.
The lower part 9 of the principal piece 3 is somewhat larger than the cleanout-opening in the upper part of the container and is provided with a recess for receiving a rubber ring 10 which will bear against the inner surface of the upper wall of the-container. The principal piece 3 is provided with exterior thread and passes through a plate 12 which rests on the outer surface of the upper wall of the container. A nut 11 placed on the exterior thread will bear against the plate 12 and thus force the lower part 9 of the piece 3 against the inner surface of the upper wall of the container, the

The improvements in the above mentioned closure consistingiving the piece. 3 the form of'an inverted bottle neck at'its inner and' f'i interior extreme end placing on said end an ordinary crown sealing device or diaphragm g an inner flange in the central perforation 4.
Hitherto the -c'entralbore of the piece 3 1.- was closed by means of a cork. This closure would not be airtight and furthermore the removal of samewas not always easy.
The closure according to the present invention has the following advantages:
It effects an absolutely hermetic seal of the central bore 4; it is easier to place and easier to remove; it is cheaper than the cork; no prior cleaning and preparing of the crown diaphragm being required.
As the principle of the invention is to place the crown diaphragm 8 in an inverted manner onto the flange 7, it will readily be understood that any pressure from within the container will augment the sealing effect of the crown diaphragm 8, making the seal absolutely hermetic.
When the liquid of the container has to be used, it will be suflicient to introduce a tube or pipe in the upper endof the central open-1: ing or bore 4 and push it slightly against the crown diaphragm 8, which will easily unfasten and fall within the container thereby permitting easy outward flow of the liquid contents. V
Having thus described my invention what I claim is: V
1. In a barrel or container, a closure device comprising a lower plate having an upper and lower extension with a bored portion pro truding above and below said plate, an upper plate with an opening containing the upper extension of the lower plate, said upper extension being threaded, and means for making engagement with the threaded portion of the extension whereby to bring the plates in cfiose contact against. the barrel or container wa y 2. In a barrel or container, a closure device according to claim 1 having a flanged end on the lower portion of said extension, and a leakage proof sealing member attached to said flange.
3. In a container for liquid commodities, a closure device for an opening in the container, comprising a lower plate having an upper and lower extension with atapered centrally bored portion protruding above and belowthe plate, the lower extension having an outer peripheral flange at its lower extremity, an upper plate with a central opening containing the upper extension of said lower plate, means around the upper extension for drawing the lower and upper plates toward each other and against the inner and outer walls surrounding the opening of the container, and a sealing diaphragm facing the interior of the container and surrounding the outer peripheral flange to cover the bore of the extension whereby to close the. same and prevent leakage of the contents of .the
. container.
In testimony whereof I have aifixed my signature. 7
