Description

'J. Y. CHAPMAN. Boys Sled.
' No. 199,897. Patented Feb. 5,1878.

N.FETER5. PHOTO-UTHOGRAFNER, WASHINGTON. D C.
'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN Y. CHAPMAN, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOSEPH W. HOLMES.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOYS SLEDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,897, dated February 5,1678; applicationfiled November 9, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN Y. CHAPMAN, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleighs, which improvements are fully set forth in the follow ing specification and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2, a bottom view; and Fig. 3, a section through one of the runners in line X X, Fig. 1.
This invention is adapted for large or small sleighs; and it consists of a sleigh provided with two metallic runners, of gas-pipe or other tubular material, formed so as to be united firmly together under the bottom of the sleigh by means of right and-left-hand screw-sleeves, as will be more clearly hereinafter shown.
A represents the bottom of the sleigh; B, the runners, which are made tubular, as before mentioned, and bent to any proper form for a sleigh-runner, as shown in Fig. 1, and the supporting parts 0 D bent at right angles thereto, so as to pass under the caps E (which hold them rigidly to the bottom A) into the right-and-left-hand screw-sleeves G, as shown in Fig. 2.
By this arrangement the sleigh may be made much lighter than heretofore, and still be sufficiently strong and more durable. It is easily and cheaply constructed. Its lightness renders it much more easy to handle and less liable to get out of order.
I claim as my invention-- A sleigh consisting of the bottom A, tubular runners B, bent substantially as specified, and securely held together by the right-and-lefthand screw-sleeves G, and to the bottom A by the caps E, substantially as described.
JNO. Y. CHAPMAN.
