Description
March 26, 1935. I R, E, GUN-[HER 1,995,474
MECHANICAL STOPPER Filed Feb. 26, 1934 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 26, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to mechanical stoppers and more particularly to stoppers adapted to obstruct the flow of a liquid.
One object of this invention is the provision of a stopper adapted to register with a drain of a container and provided with adjustable means whereby said liquid may be emitted therefrom.
The inventor is familiar with various metallic stoppers, but most of such devices are cumbersome and complicated as well as being provided with a plurality of parts, thereby malnng them impracticable to compete with the manufacture of the simple, everyday so-called rubber stoppers.
Other objects and features will more fully appear from the following description and accompanying drawing in which: i
Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic perspective of a container showing the stopper disposed in the drain thereof; Fig. 2 is a side view of the stopper; Fig. 3 is a top plan view, and Fig. 4 is a view of the basal portion of said stopper.
Referring to the drawing, the stopper 1 consists of a base 2 provided with a plurality of apertures 3 and having a conical edge 4 around the periphery thereof. A central aperture 6 is disposed in the center of said base and adapted to engage a bolt 7 disposed in an orifice 8; a top 9 having a plurality of orifices 10 is adapted to register with apertures 3 in said base; and a handle 11 projects from said top to assist an operative to cause rotatable circumferential displacement of said top with respect to I said base. Both said top and base may be conically inclined as illustrated; depending upon the inclination (if any) of a drain pipe. A section of a liquid container 12 is disclosed in Fig. 1 and is provided with a drain 13, and the stopper is shown disposed therein.
It is obvious from the foregoing that by simply placing the'stopper at the mouth of the drain and moving the orifices 10 out of the path of apertures 3, the position of both top and base will be to prevent the escape of a liquid and the like; by 10 moving the top 9 so as to cause the orifices 10 to register with apertures 3, a perforated outlet is provided. A slot 14 in said top is in operative relation with a pin 15, said pin being adapted to limit the top in its circumferential movement.
Having described this invention, what is claimed is:
1. In a device of the character described consisting of a ccnically shaped base; a plurality of apertures therein; a pin thereon; a top; a plu- 20 rality of orifices therein; a slot in said top in operative relation with said pin and means connecting said base to said top.
2. In a device of the character described consisting of an apertured conically shaped base 25 adapted to register with a drain pipe; an apertured top rotatably mounted on said base and engaging said base over latters entire surface;
a handle engaging said top; a pin in said base and a slot in said top adapted to engage said pin v so as to limit the movement of said top.
