(01.1242) This invention relates to machines for operating upon shoe parts'and is illustrated as embodied in a machine for forming inthe breasts 'of Louis heels heel cover receiving grooves or 5 slotsextending heightwise of the heels.
In covering Louis heels in the manner disclosedlin United States Letters Patent No. 1,704,,- 204, granted March 5, 1929, on an application filed in-the name of William H. Nutt, it is sometimesthe practice to cause the upper end of each of the heel cover receiving slots to terminate at an upper breast corner of the heel in order that after the breast flap has been applied to the heel it will form a smooth continuation with the 715i edges of the shank portion of the shoe to which the heel is applied.
In forming heel cover receiving slots of the character above described in the breasts of Louis heels it has been found that if the slot forming means penetrates the upper part of the projecting lip portion of the breast of the heel to the same depth as it is desirable to penetrate the lower part of the heel breast in making the slots,
the slot forming means will break through the attaching face of the heel for a substantial distance rearwardly of the lip of the projecting portion of the heel so as to leave a sliver portion between the upper end of each-of the slots and a side of the heel. Such sliver portions, if too long are likely to split from the heel after the shoe has been wornthus causing the cover to separate from the upper breast cornersof the heel and spoiling the appearance of the shoe.
Accordingly, it is desirable that the upper end portion of each of the slots shall'decrease in depth as it approaches an upper breast corner of the heel, these portions of the slots being of sufii- .cient depth, however, effectively to receive and to secure the marginal portions of the breast flap to the heel but not being of a sufficient depth to cause the above-described weakness in the heel.
It is an object of this invention to provide an inexpensive and effective machine for forming 451 heel cover receiving slots in the breasts of Louis heels.
With the above object in view andin accordance with a feature of this invention the illustrated machine is provided with slot forming 9 means, and'mechanism constructed and arranged for sliding engagement with a Louis heel to guide the same relatively to the slot forming means thereby toicut in the breast of the heel a cover \receiving slot which is'substantially' parallel to a corresponding portion of one of the breastedges:

The heel guiding mechanism besides serving as a guide for the heel as it moves past the slot forming means which is illustrated as a circular 7'0 saw, in accordance with another feature of the invention, is constructed and arranged to position the heel withits longitudinal median plane inclined heightwise of the heel to the plane of the saw, the mechanism being mounted for movement in a plane to form in the projecting portion of the breast of the heel, a heel cover receiving lsllotlterminating at an upper breast corner of the In order to form in the breast of theheel the 86* slot portions which are substantially parallel to corresponding portions of the breast edges, the heel guiding mechanism comprises a block having a heel guiding face for engaging the breast of the heel and a gage constructed and arranged to enage a side of the heel and to cooperate with the block in guiding the heel past the circular saw and in positioning theheel in a predetermined stationary position with reference to the block. In accordance with a further feature of 90 the invention the block is provided with a sharply curved portion adapted to engage the projecting portion of the breast of the heel, the block being mounted for movement relatively to the saw to cause the cutting edge of the saw, which normally extends beyond the heel guiding face of the block, to project beyond the sharply curved portion of the block, thereby to form in the projecting por-. tion of the breast of'the heel, a continuation of' the heel cover receiving slot. 1'06 In order to insure that the heel may beso positioned on the block that, when it is moved past the'saw, the slot formed in the projecting .portion of the breast of the heel will terminate at, an upper breast corner thereof, the illustrated block is provided with a raised portion constructed and arranged to tilt a side, of the heel adjacent tolthat breast corner into engagement with the gage before moving the block past'the saw. To limit the depth of theslot formed in the projecting portion of the breast of the heel, the machine is provided with a stop which limits the movement of the block relatively to the saw and regulates the amount of projection of the saw beyond the sharply curved portion of the block.
In practice it has been found that in order to obtain a groove of uniform depth at the lower part of the projecting portion of the heel, the radius of the saw should be slightly greater than the radius of curvature of the projecting portion of the breast of the heel. In order to continue the above-mentioned grooveto the lip of the projecting portion and cause the depth of the groove to decrease in the vicinity of the lip to insure that the saw will breakthrough the! attaching face for only a short distance rearw'ardly of the lip, the block, and the gage, which engages a side of the heel, are mounted forpivotal move.- ment past the saw, the block meanwhile being held against the stop. .With the above and other objects andfeatures in view, the invention will now be deseribedwith reference to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims.

The illustrated machine comprises a rotaryv saw. or cutter 20 mounted upon a shaft 22.-of a motor 24 (Fig. l), and gaging mechanism constructed and arranged to present a Louis heel 26 to'the saw 20 to form in the breast 28 of theheel a'slot or groove 30 of the general type disclosed in the above-mentioned U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,704,204 and into which the marginal portions of the side and breast covers of the heel are in turned in a manner further disclosed in that patent. The gaging mechanism comprises a block or table 32 supported for rectilinear move ment from an arm 34 through the dove-tailed slot and tongue connection 36 (Figs. 2, 6 and 7) The block 32is provided with an upper surface 38 having the general curvature of the ljo'wer relatively planar portion=of thebreast of the heel and with a' depending or sharply curvedportion j 40'formed for engagement with the breast of the heel. The arm 34 includes an upper face 42 which forms a continuation of the surface 38"ofthe table 32, a depending face 44, and a vertically" disposed narrow shoulder 46 curved lengthwise to'approximate the curvature of the portionof the side of a wood heel adjacent only to the breast edge of the same.
The illustrated machine comprises left and right units A and B respectively (Fig. 1) constructed and arranged to form the heel cover receiving slots or grooves 30 (Fig. 8) in the breasts of heels. Each of the, units is similar to the other, except thatcorresponding parts of the units are reverse-d. In proceeding with the details of description, it will therefore be necessary to describe only one of the units, it being understood that for each part of one unit the other unit has an opposed but corresponding part.
The rotary saw 20 is located in an opening 48 (Fig. 2) formed between the arm 34 and the table 32 and when the machine is arranged to start the slotting operation normally projects or extends above the surface 38 of the table in order that as a heel, thebreast 23 of which engages the surfaces 38, 42 of the table 32 and the arm 34 respectively and the side of which engages the shoulder 46, is moved over the table and past the saw20, a lower slot portion 50 which is substantially parallel to a corresponding portion of an adjacent breast edge of the heel will be formed. As above stated, in order to promote brevity, portions of the slot 30 and portions of a breast edge 52 may be said to correspond to each other when they are located at approximately the same distances from the top lift receivingface 54 of the heel.
L Inshoeshaving edge-slotted Louis heels,it isdesirable that the cover or flap receiving slots shall terminate at the upper breast corners 56 of the heel in order that the flaps, which are split from the rear portions of the sole, when applied to the breast 2 8 of the heel will merge with the lateral edges; of the shank portion of the sole ofthe shoe. Accordingly, the portion 58 of the slot 30 located in the projecting portion 59 of the heel,-instead of extending parallel to corresponding portions. of the breast edge 52, lies in a plane, the heel being positioned and moved past the saw, 20 in arectilinear path, to cause the end of the slot 30 being formed to terminate at a breast corner 56 of the heel.
It will be noted that while forming the lower slot portion 50in the heel, the side of the heel follows around the curvature of the shoulder 46 and that when the projecting portion 59 of the breast 28 of the heel engages the depending portion or apron40 of the table 32, the heel is swung to a position such as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3 so that its lengthwise median plane forms an angle with the plane of the saw. It has been found by experience, 'sincethe upper forward portionsof thesides of the heel curve inwardly toward the median plane of the heel, that when the surface 38 of the table 32 is disposed at 90 to the plane of the saw and the heel indicated in Fig. 3 is moved in a rectilinear path past the saw, the upper planar portion of the slotwill break through the side of the heel before itreaches the breast corner of the heel and will thus ruin the heel. In order to overcome this objection, the surfaces 33 and 42. of the table 32 and the arm 34, respectively, are disposed at an angle b which is somewhat greater than-90 to the plane of the saw and a rear inner corner of the block is provided with a slightly raised portion 64 which engages the-projecting portion .59 of the breast of the heel and tilts the heel as illustrated in Fig. 4 to swing theside of the heel adjacent'to the breast. corner 32 toward the abutment 72.

The screw 74 is normally set so as to permit the block 32 to move toward the abutment 72 until the saw 20 enters the projecting portion 59 of the breast of the heel upon the block 32 as illustrated in Fig.
10, it being noted that in practice the radius of the saw 20 is about of an inch greater than the radius of curvature of the projecting portion of the breast of the heel.
In some cases it may be desirable to cause the slot to run out of the breast of the heel near the top of the breast and, accordingly, the screw 74 may be adjusted further to limit the movement of the block Movement of the block 32 away from the abutment 72 due to the compression of the spring 66 is limited by a pin 76 (Fig. 6) secured to the arm 34 and projecting into the guideway 36 for contact with a shoulder 78 of the block 32.
It will be noted that the saw 20 should not enter the sharply curved projecting portion 59 of the :heel to a depth greater than that necessary for receiving the cover, otherwise the strength of the heel will be impaired at the upper breast corners since the thin sliver portion 80 formed between each slot 30, which at its upper end breaks through to the attaching face of the heel, and the forward upper portion of the sides of the heel; is likely to break off after the heel hasbeen attached to the shoe.
In full Louis heel construction the lip 82 of the projecting portion 59 of the breast of the heel extends so far forwardly of the lower portion of the breast'of the heel that in order to continue the slot to the upper breast corners 56 of the heel without cutting too deeply into the projecting portion of the breast of the heel, it is desirable that after the heel has been slid to the 4 limit of its forward movement, as illustrated in Fig. lb, it should be swung past the saw 20.
To eifect such movement, the arm 34 is providedwith a sleeve 84 which is mounted upon a cylindrical rod 86 secured by screws 83 to upright portions 90 of a base 92. The base 92 is bolted to a fiat support 9 and in order initially to position the heel gaging mechanism relatively to the saw 20, the arm 34 is provided with a handle 96 the end of which rests upon the flat support as to'set the machine for starting the heel slotting operation.
In order to perform the heel slotting operation, the operator first moves the heel, the breast of which engages the surfaces 33 and 42 of the block 32 and the arm 3% respectively and the side of which engages the shoulder 46, past the saw to form at the lower part of the heel a cover receiving slot which is parallel to corresponding portions of an adjacent breast edge 52 of the Upon continued movement of the heel, as above explained, the projecting portion 59 of the heel engages the depending portion 40 of the block 32, the heel assuming a laterally tilted po sition such as illustrated in Fig. 4 to throw the upper forward portion of the side of the heel against the shoulder 46 due to the inclination of the surface 38 to the shoulder 46 and due to the slightly raised portion 64 of the block. The block 32 is then pushed toward the abutmerit-.72 under pressure of the heel until the block engages the screw 74, to cause the saw to enter the sharply curved portion of the heel to form in the projecting portion 59 of the heel a continuation of the slot 30. If a full Louis heel is being operated upon, the block 32 and the arm 34 together with the positioned heel are finally swung, as illustrated in Fig. 11, about the rod 86 in order to continue the slot to an upper breast corner of the heel.
Although the illustrated machine has been described with reference to forming a heel cover receiving slot extending from the top lift receiving face to the heel attaching face of the heel, it will be clear that by elevating the block 32 so that the saw 20 does not extend above the surface 38 an operator is able by sliding theblock '32 or by sliding the block and thereafter turning the block about the axis of the rod 86 to form a heel cover receiving slot only in the projecting portion of the breast of the heel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A slotting machine having, in combination, slot forming means, and means constructed and arranged for sliding engagement with a heel, the breast of which has a projecting portion, to guide the heel relatively to the slot forming means thereby to form in the breast of the heel a cover receiving slot which is substantially parallel to a corresponding portion of one of the breast edges of the heel, said slot forming means and said heel guiding means being mounted for relative bodily movement in a path extending generally heightwise of the heel positioned by said guiding means to form in the projecting portion of the breast of the heel a continuation of said slot which is inclined to a corresponding portion of said breast edge.
2. A slotting machine having, in combination, slot forming means, and means constructed and arranged for sliding engagement with a heel, the
breast of which has a projectins portion, to guide the heel relatively to the slot forming means thereby to form in the breast of the heel a slot which is substantially parallel to a corresponding portion of one of the breast edges of the heel, said slot forming means and said heel guiding means being mounted for relative bodily movement in a path included in a plane thereby to form in said projectingportion of the breast of the heel a continuation of the slot inclined toward a corresponding portion of said breast edge and terminating at one of the upper breast corners of the heel.
3. In a grooving machine, a groove forming cutter, and means-constructed and arranged to engage angularly disposed surfaces of aheel, the upper part of the breast of which has a projecting portion, to guide the heel past the cutter thereby to form in the breast of the heel acover receiving groove which is substantially parallel to a corresponding part of one of the breast edges of the heel, portions of said heel guiding means the heel relatively to the cutter in a path extending generally heightwise of the heel to cause the latter to continue the groove into the projecting portion of the breast of the heel in a direction inclined toward a corresponding portion of said breast edge.

A grooving machine having in combination, groove forming means, and means including a heel breast engaging member constructed and arranged to guide a heel the breast of which has a projecting portion past the groove forming means to cut in the breast ofthe heels. heel cover receiving groove which is substantially parallel to a corresponding portion of one of the breast edges of the heel, said member being mounted for rectilinear movement relatively to the groove forming means to cut in the projecting portion of the breast of the heel a continuation of said groove.
5. In a slotting machine, slot forming means, and means including a heel breast engaging gage constructed and arranged to guide a heel the breast of which has a projecting portion past the slot forming means to cut in the breast of the 'heel a heel cover receiving slot which is substantially parallel to a corresponding portion of one of the breast edges of the heel, said gage being mounted for sliding movement relatively to the slot forming means to cut in the projecting portion of the breast of the heel a continuation of the said slot inclined to a corresponding portion of said breast edge. i
6. A slotting machine having, in combination, slot forming means, a support constructed and arranged to engage the breast of 2. Louis heel, and a gage shaped and arranged to engage a side of the heel to guide the same over the support and past the slot forming means to'cut in the lower portion of the breast of the heel a heel cover receiving slot which is substantially parallel to a corresponding portion of one of the breast edges of the heel, said support being mounted for movement in a rectilinear path to move the heel supported thereon against the slot forming means to cut in "the sharply curved breast portion of the Louis heel a continuation of the slot inclined to a corresponding portion of said breast edge, said support and said gage being mounted for pivotal movement to continue the groove to the lip of the projecting portion of the breast'of the heel.
'7. A slotting machine having, in combination, a circular saw, and means provided with angularly disposed surfaces constructed and arranged for sliding engagement with a Louis heel to guide the heel relatively to the saw thereby to form in the breast of the heel a cover receiving slot which is substantially parallel to a corresponding portion of one of the breast edges of the heel, said means being mounted for movement to transfer the heel positioned by said means past the saw to cause the latter to form in the projecting portion of the heel a continuation of said slot inclined to a corresponding portion of said breast edge of the heel.
8. A slotting machine having, in combination, a circular saw, and means provided with angularly disposed surfaces constructed and arranged for sliding engagement with a Louis heel to guide the heel past the saw thereby to'form in'the lower portion of the'breast of the heel a heel cover re,- ceiving slot which is substantially parallel to a corresponding portion of cheer the breast edges of the heel, said means being mounted for movement relatively to the circular saw in a planesubstanti ally parallel to the plane of the saw to guide the heel positioned upon said means against the saw to form in the projecting portion of the breast of the heel a continuation of the slot inclined to said breast edge and terminating at an upper breast corner of the heel.
9. A slotting machine having, in combination, a circular saw,- and means comprising a support constructed and arranged to engage the breast of a Louis heel to guide the heel over said means andpast the saw to form in the lower portion of the breast of the heel a cover receiving slot which is substantially parallel to a corresponding portion of one of theibreast edges of the heel, said means being constructed and arranged to locate the heel in a predetermined position and being mounted for movement relatively to the circular saw in a plane substantially parallel to the plane of the saw to form in the projecting portion of the breast of the positioned heel a continuation of said slot inclined to a corresponding portion of said breast edge and terminating at an upper breast corner of the heel.
10. A slotting machine having,in combination, slot forming means, a support constructed and arranged to engage the'breast of a Louis heel, and a gage to engage the side of the heel only adjacent to one of the breast edges of the same to guide the heel over the support thereby to form in the breast of the heel a cover receiving slot which is substantially parallel to a corresponding portion of said breast edge, said support and said gage being pivotally mounted for movement relatively to the slot forming means to cut in a projecting portion of the breast of the heel a continuation of saidslot extending in a direction inclined toward a corresponding portion of said breast edge of the heel.
11. A grooving machine having, in combination, a circular saw, a support for engaging the breast of a Louis heel, and agage for engaging a side of the heel to guide the heel upon the support thereby to form in the breast of the same a heel cover receiving groove which issubstantially parallel to a corresponding portion of one of the breast edges of the heel, said support being mounted for sliding movement in a plane substantially parallel with the plane of the saw to form in the sharply curvedportion of the breast of the heel a continuation of said groove inclined toward a corresponding portion of said breast edge of the heel.

Aslotting machine having, in combination, a circular saw, a support for engaging the breast of a Louis heel, and a gage for engaging a side of the heel only adjacent to one of the breast edges of the same to guide the heel upon the support thereby to form in the breast of the heel a heel cover receiving slot which is substantially parallel to a corresponding portion of one of the breast edges of the heel, said support being being mounted for rectilinear movement in a plane substantiallyv parallel to the plane of the saw to form in the sharply curved portion of the breast of the heel a continuation of said slot inclined toward a corresponding portion of said breast edge of the heel.
13. A slotting machine having, in combination, a circular saw, a block constructed and arranged to'engage the breast of a Louis heel, and a gage to engage the side ofthe heel to cooperate with the block in guiding the heel past the saw to form in the lower part of the breast of the heel va heel cover receiving slot which is parallel.,,to a corresponding portion of a breast edge of the heel, said block having a sharply curvedportion constructed and arranged to engage the projecting portion of the breast of the heel and to tilt the heel about an axis extending heightwise oi the heel and also to cooperate with the gage in maintaining the heel in a predetermined position, said block being mounted for movement relatively to the saw to cause the cutting edges of the saw to extend beyond the curved portion thereby to form in the projecting portion of the heel a continuation of the slot.
14. A grooving machine having, in combination, a circular saw, a block constructed and arranged to engage the breast of a Louis heel, and a gage to engage the side of the heel and shaped and arranged to cooperate with the block in guiding the heel past the saw to form in the lower part of the breast of the heel a heel cover receiving groove which is parallel to a correspcnding' portion of a breast edge of the heel, said block having a sharply curved portion constructed and arranged to engage the projecting portion of the breast of the heel and to tilt the heel about an axis extending heightwise of the heel 5 and also to cooperate with the gage in maintaining the heel in a predetermined position, said block being mounted for movement relatively to the saw to cause the cutting edges thereof to extend beyond the curved portion of the block thereby to form in the projecting portion of the heel a continuation of the groove inclined to a corresponding portion of said breast edge of the heel, the gage and the block being pivotally mounted for movement past the saw in a plane which is substantially parallel to the plane of the saw thereby to continue the groove to one of the upper breast corners of the heel. 1
15. A slotting machine having, in combination, a rotary cutter, a block having a face beyond which the cutter projects, and a gage constructed and arranged to cooperate with said face to position a heel the breast of which engages said face relatively to the cutter as the heel is moved over said face pastcthe cutter to form a'heel cover receiving slot in the lower part of the breast of the heel, said block comprising a sharply curved face which normally extends beyond the cutter and is constructed and arranged to engage the projecting portion of the breast of the heel, the block being mounted for movement to cause the cutter to extend beyond the sharply curved face thereby to form in the projecting portion of the breast of the heel a continuation of the slot.
16. A heel slotting machine having, in combination, a circular saw, a block having a portion beyond which the cutting edge of the saw projects, and a gage constructed and arranged to cooperate with said portion to position a heel the breast of which engages said portion relatively to the saw as the heel is moved over said portion past the saw thereby to form a heel cover receiving slot in the lower part of the breast of the heel, said block comprising a sharply curved portion which normally extends beyond the cutting edge of the saw and is constructed and arranged to engage the projecting portion of the breast of the heel and is mounted for movement in a plane disposed substantially parallel to the plane of the saw to project the cutting edge of the saw beyond the sharply curved portion thereby to form a continuation of the slot in the projecting portion of the breast of the heel.

A heel slotting machine having, in combination, a circular saw, a block having a portion beyond which the cutting edge of the saw projects, a gage constructed and arranged to cooperate with said portion to position a heel the breast of which engages said portion relatively to the saw as the heel is moved over said portion past the saw thereby to form a heel cover receiving slot in the lower part of the breast of the heel, said block comprising a sharply curved portion which normally extends beyond the cutting edge of the saw and is constructed and arranged to engage the projecting portion of the breast of the heel and is mounted for reciprocation in a plane disposed substantially parallel to the plane or" the saw to cause the cutting edge of the saw to extend beyond the sharply curved portion of the block thereby to form a continuation or" the slot in the projecting portion of the breast of the heel, and a stop constructed and arranged to limit the movement of the block toward the saw to regulate the depth of the slot formed in the projecting portion of the breast of the heel.
18. A heel slotting machine having, in combination, a rotary cutter, and a table beyond which the cutting edge or the cutter projects, a gage constructed and arranged to position a Louis heel the breast of which engages the table relatively to the cutter to form a h el cover receiving slot in the lower portion of the breast of the heel as the heel is moved past the cutter, said table comprising a depending portion constructed and arranged to engage the upper projecting portion of the breast of the heel and being constructed for sliding movement relatively to the cutter under pressure of the heel to form in the projecting portion of the breast or" the heel a continuation or" said slot.
19. A heel slotting machine having, in combination, a rotary cutter, and a table beyond which the cutter projects, a gage constructed and arranged to position a Louis heel the breast of which engages the table relatively to the cutter to form a heel cover receiving slot in the lower portion of the breast of the heel as the heel is moved past the cutter, said table comprising a depending portion constructed and arranged to engage the upper projecting portion or" the breast of t the heel and being constructed for sliding movement relatively to the cutter under pressure of the heel to form in the projecting portion of the breast of the heel a continuation of said slot, and means for limiting themovement oi the table of the slot in the projecting portion of the breast of the heel.
20. A heel slotting machine having, in combination, a rotary cutter, a block having a curved surface constructed and arranged to engage the projecting portion of the breast of a Louis heel, and a gage to position-the heel upon the surface of the block, said block being mounted for rectilinear movement with respect to the cutter to form a heel cover receiving slot in the projecting portion of the breast of the heel and also being mounted for pivotal movement past the cutter to form a continuation of said heel cover receiving slot.
21. A heel slotting machine having, in combination, a rotary cutter, means including a block beyond which the c tting edge of the cutter extends constructed and arranged to engage the breast and a side of a Louis heel to guide the heel over the block and past the cutter thereby to form in the lower portion or" the breast of the heel a heel cover receiving slot, said block having a curved portion normally extending beyond the cutter and with which the projecting portion of the heel may be engaged, and means to move the block relatively to the cutter to cause the cutting edge of the cutter to extend beyond the curved portion of the block thereby to form a continuation of the slot in the projecting portion of the heel.
22. A slotting machine having, in combination, slot forming means, means including a heel breast engaging member constructed and arranged to guide a heel the breast of which has a projecting portion past the slot forming means thereby to out in the breast of the heel a heel cover receiving slot which is substantially parallel to a corresponding portion of one of the breastedges of the heel, said member being -mounted for movement relatively to the slot forming means to cut in the projecting portion of the breast of the heel a continuation of said slot, and a stop for limiting the movement of said member to control the depth of the slot formed in the projecting portion of the breast of the heel.
23. A slotting machine having, in combination, a circular saw, a support to engage the breast of 2. Louis heel, a gage to engage a side of the heel only adjacent to one of the breast edges of the same to guide the heel upon the support past the saw thereby to form in the breast of the heela heelcoverreceiving slot which is substantially parallel to a corresponding portion of one ;of the breast edges of the'heehsaid support being mounted for rectilinear movement in a plane substantially parallel to the plane of the saw to form in the sharply curved portion of the breast of the heel a continuation of said slot inclined towvard a corresponding portion of said breast edge, and means to limit the movement of the support to control the depth ofithe slot formed in the projecting portion of the heel.

A slotting machine having, in combination, 'a rotary cutter, a block having a face beyond which the cuttervprojects, a gage constructed and arranged to cooperate with said face to position a heel the breast of which engages said face relatively to the'cutter as the heel is moved over said face and past the cutter thereby to forma heel cover receiving slot inthe lower part of the breast or" the heel, said block having a sharply curved face which normally extends beyond the cutter and is constructed and arranged to engage the pro'ecting portion of the breast of the heel and is mounted for movement to cause the cutter to extend beyond the sharplycurve'd face thereby to form in the'sh'arply curved portion of the breast of the heel'a'continuation'of the slot, a stop-arranged to limitthe movement of the block, and means for causing the block to move back to its original position'to position the sharply curved face of the block-beyond the cutter.
25. A heel slotting machine having, in combi nation, a circular saw, a heel positioning support including curved, angularly disposed "heel engaging faces one of which is mounted for sliding movement relatively to the other in the plane of the saw, said support-being mounted for pivotal movement past the saw and in the plane of the saw.
26. A slot forming machine having, in combination, slot forming means, and means provided with surfaces constructed and arranged for engagement with the breast and a side of a Louis heel respectively for positioning the same relatively to the slot forming means, said heel positioning means being mounted for bodily movement together with the heel in a curved path past the slot forming means to cut in the breast of the heel at its projecting portion a slot lying in a plane inclined with respect to one of the breast edges of the heel and terminating substantially at one of the upper breast corners of the heel.

A slot forming machine having, in combination, slot forming means, and means provided with surfaces constructed and arranged for engagement with the breast and a side of a Louis heel respectively for positioning the same relatively to the slot forming means, said heel positioning means being mounted for pivotal movement relatively to the slot forming means to cut in the breast of the heel at its projecting portion a slot which lies in aplane and is inclined toward one of the breast edges of the heel and terminates substantially at one of the upper breast corners of the same.
28. A grooving machine having, in combination, a circular saw, and means constructed and arranged to position a heel the breast of Which has a projecting portion with its longitudinal median plane inclined to the plane of the saw, said saw and said heel positioning means being mounted for relative bodily movement in a curved path lying in a plane to form in the breast of the positioned heel at its projecting portion a groove inclined to one of the breast edges 7 of the heel.
29. A slotting machine having, in combination, a circular saw, and means constructed and arranged to position a heel the breast of which has a projecting portion with'its longitudinal median plane inclined to the plane of the saw,"
saidheel positioning means being mounted. for
projecting portion of the breast of the heel a positioned heel at its projecting portion a heel cover receiving slot inclined to one of the breast edges of the heel and terminating substantially atone of the upper breast corners of theheel.
31. A grooving machine having, in combination, a circular saw, and gages constructed and arranged to engage the breast and. a side of a heel the breast of which has a projecting portion to position the same with itslongitudinal median plane inclined to the plane-of the saw, said gages being mounted for movement past the saw to heel and terminating substantially at one'of the breast corners of the same.
