'Ihis invention relates to multi-unit web printing machines, and more particularly to newspaper printing presses.
In the production of the modern` newspaper,
l provision must be made to meet the increasing demand for color pages and especially colored advertisements. Attempts have heretofore been made to supply color pages by providing selected printing units or printing couples of a newspaper press with color fountains so that a color page or color pages may be produced, or colored printing couples added to the press line or to an individual printing unit. Such arrangements are satisfactory within their limitations, but the progressively increasing demand for color pages in newspapers necessitates the provision of means affording maximum flexibility in the combinations of web runs.
It is the especial object of this invention to provide novel press arrangements and components, whereby. color webs may be worked.

It is also an object of this invention to provide a novel press arrangement, whereby color webs may be associated with perfected black webs vand the associated webs conveyed to any selected folder or folders.
Another object of the invention is the provision of novel 4press arrangement and components whereby color webs may be associated with the black newspaper webs with the maximum convenience and operating economy.
A more specific object of this invention is the provision of a novel press arrangement including a line of perfecting black units, folders located in the line and positioned to'divide the line into separate cooperable groups of units, multi-color units laterally disposed relative to the line of units, and means for so associating the webs that a multiplicity of runs may be arranged and the webs. conveyed'to any desired folder or folders.
An additional object of the invention is the provision of novel press arrangement and components of generally improved construction whereby the resulting composite press will be simple, durable and inexpensive in construction, as well as practical, serviceable and eiiicient in its use.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts, and in the details oi ccninto a multiplicity of runs and conveyedto structionhereinafter described and claimed, it
being understood that various changes in the -is claimed without departing from the vspirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, in which similar yreference characters designate corresponding parts, there is shown a portion of a line of newspaper units, and, in the present instance, each unit comprises a ilrst printing couple 12 and a superposed and oilset perfecting couple 13, thus producing what is known in the art as a Z type newspaper unit, although itis to be understood that any preferred type of newspaper unit may be employed. In Figs. 1, 2A, 2B, 4, 5 and 6, a plurality of units vdesignated as 11, 11a, 11b, 11e, 11d, 11e, 11'f and 11g are showninaline, 95 but it is to be understood that any advantageous number of units may be employed, and preferably twelve units divided in separate groups, as hereinafter disclosed.
Double folders 16, 16a and 16h of the con- 100 ventional newspaper type are provided in the line of units and positioned to divide the line printing units into groups of three units each, as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2A, 2B, 4, 5 and 6. The folders and units comprising the printing line are operably supported by the usual framing including the sub-structure 17, conventional bed plate v18, press frames 19 and any preferred super-structure 20. Multi-color printing units 26 and 26a are operably disposed at right angles to the line of units and supported by the conventional framing 27. Each multi-color unit includes a plurality of superposed printing couplesy 28v in vertical alignment andthe unit is equipped with web guide rolls so that combinations of web runs are provided in this unit. The sub-structure 17 supports -any preferred source of web supplyv for the -units 1l, 11a, 11b, llc, 11d, 11e, 11f and 11g, and there is diagrammatically illustrated the yconventional threeroll paper supports or reels 31 and conventional ten'- sion belt `or device 32 for each line printing unit.v

'Ihe multi-color unit 26 is provided with a plurality of web guide rollers in order that any y desired web run through the press 'may be provided, andthe line of black perfecting units is also provided with rollers which are arranged to permit any desired combination of web' runs to'any selected folder 'or folders.
Referring to Fig'.A 3, the web 37 from the se, lected roll 36 is ledover Webguide rollers 41 to the 'conventional feedrollers 42, then over rollers 43 through the uppermost printing couple 28 where one side of the web is printed, andthis particular run is preferably colored, although black may be here employed if desired. vFrom this point the web 37 is guided by rollers 44 throughjthefremalning printing couples 2,8 of
,the unit 26 where' four additionalA colors are printedon theopposite side of the web; or,if
` preferred,the flrst two couples 28 from the top" of the unit may be employed' to perfect the web in black, and three colors then applied to one side of the web. VAfter passing through the unit 26, the web 37 is then bar 40 where this color web is turned through an angle of 90 and then run parallelv to the web runl of the line of perfecting units'.v In Figs.
'Av 2A, 2Bvand 4, one of the' combination of web runs is depictedfand. the web 37 after passing over the turner bar 40 is guided by rollers 50 to the drag lroller 51 and down the former plate 52 to the selected folder 16. In 'the run herey illustrated, a web 54'is guided by suitable vrollers 55 from its supply roll 33, through the perfecting unit 11e and over guide rollers 56 and then associated with the colorweb 37, and finally over the drag roller 51 down the former 52 to the folder 16. vA web is led from its supply roll 33 through the perfecting unit 11b over suitablev and. 40a and then into guided over rollers 45,' v propellers 46, then over roller 47 to a turner guide rollers 61, compensators 62, rollers 63 to the drag rollers 51 down the former plate 52 into the folder 16.. A web is guided from its supply roll 33 through the unit-11a over g'uide roll 7l, around the drag roller 51 and down the former 52 to the folder 16. As shown in Fig. 2A, three additional webs 72, 73 and 74 are run over the drag roller 51, down the former 52 tothe folder 16. These websare run from v vthe black perfecting unit 11 and two similar units (not shown) positioned in the line at the left of unit 11.
As shown in Figs. 2B and 4, the web 37a is led from' the color unit 26a over turner bar 40a around provided guide rollersl80, drag Vroller 81, down over former 82, and into the folder 16b. 'I'he web 85 is run from the unit 11d over suitable guide rollers 86, drag rollerv 8l, down the former 82 to the folder 16h. Webs 88 and 89 from units 11e and llf aresimilarly guided to the folder 16b,'as clearly shown in Fig., 2B. Additional webs 90, 91l and 92 are led t from the black perfecting lineunit 11g and two similar units (not shown) locatedin the line at the right of unit 11g, into thev folder 161i.v
Thus. it is seen, that six perfected blackrwebs, four pages wide, and one color web of equal width, is run to the double folder 16, thereby producing twenty-four-page papers with one `four-page color supplement when running noncollect, or forty-eight-page papers with two' fourpage color supplements when running collect. By slitting and turning the webs, a forty-eightpage paper with an eight-page color supplement l can be produced running non-collect, cross-associate, as will be understood by those skilled inv the art. This combination maybe varied at will and the number of black pagesincreased and the color pages `correspondingly decreased by printing one side of the color web black.A y
VAnother arrangement of the color-webfrun is web 37 from the color unit 26 land color web 37a from color unit? 26a are led over turner bars 40 the center double folder 16a. With this run there is produced eightpage color supplements with any selected number of` black` pages when employing both deliv- -eries and running non-collect, or two eightpage color supplements when running collect. By slitting and turning the color webs, a sixteenpage color supplement -is produced and this arrangement may valso be employed-to produce separate color supplements by leading the two color webs 37 and 37a into the center folder 16a and silencing" the black line units. 1
