This invention relates in general to brassires.

one object of the invention being to vprovide a brassire embodying nove and improved features of construction which shall be capable of molding and holding the bust in its correct, natural `shape and position, and shall be especially adapted for wear with modern dresses the upper edges of which are low on the i'lgure, so as to produce a refined and graceful appearance of the ligure.

Another object is to provide such a brassire embodying novel and improved means for holding the breasts in separated or spaced relation so that a refined and graceful appearance shall be presented and comfort to the wearer of thebrassire ll shall be assured.

Further objects are to provide a brassire including novel and improved means for lifting and supporting the breasts in proper natural position; to thus provide a brassire including a main portion to' encircle the body below the bust and a tape connected thereto to underlie the breasts; and to provide such a tape which shall be at least partially elastic or yieldable longitudinally thereof or circumferentially of the body so as to assist in anchoring or holding the brassire in proper relation.

Other objects are to provide a brassire which shall have a main portion to encircle the body below the bust, bust supporting sections at the upper edge thereof, and a U-shaped stiiening member having its base connected to said main portion between said bust supporting sections. and its arms connected to the inner portions of the upper edges of said bust supporting sections to hold the breasts in spaced relation; and to obtain other advantages and results as will be brought out by the following description.

Figure 1 is a. perspective view of a brassire embodying my invention showing the same on a figure.

Figure 2 is a similar view showing a brassire combined into one garment with a. girdle or corset.

Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary horizontal sectional view on the line 5 5 of Figure 1, and Figure 6 is an enlarged transverse sectional view on the line 6-6 of Figure 3.

-Specliically describing the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the brassire comprises a main portion 1 to encircle thebody below the bust and which has an approximately straight lower edge 2 and the upper edge of which is curved 00 at 3 to approximately conform to the contour of the lower portions of the breasts. At the ends of the main portion 1 are secured elastic straps 4 which carry complemental separable fastener ele-'- ments 5 and 6, shown in the present instance as a 05 button and loop respectively.

Bust receiving sections -7 are secured to the upper edge 3 of the main portion 1 with the inner portions 8 of their upper edges 9 in spaced relation. The main portion 1 is preferably formed 7.0 of substantially inelastic material such as close woven fabric, while the bust receiving sections 7 are preferably formed `oi a netted material and are shaped to approximately conform to the normal contour of the breast. Shoulder straps 10 '5 each have one end connected to the upper edge of one of the bust receiving sections '7 and the other end connected by an elastic strap l1 to thev corresponding outer end of the main portion 1.

The invention contemplates -means for separating the breasts or holding them in spaced relation to prevent the formation of a crease between the breasts when the brassire is applied. This means is shown as comprising a U-shaped 35 piece of still'ening wire 12 which is preferably enclosed in a soft cushioning cover 13 and is sewed to the brassire beneath strips of tape 14. As shown, the base portion 15 of the Ushaped piece of wire is disposed at the upper edge of the main portion 1 between bust-receiving sections 7, and each arm 16 of the U-shaped piece of wire is secured to and extends along the inner portion of the upper edge 9 of one of the bust receiving sections. 4

Another feature of the invention is auxiliary means for lifting and supporting the breasts so as to hold them in natural position. This means is shown as comprising a tape 17, the central portion of which is secured as by stitching 18 to the 100 main portion adjacent the upper edge of the latter and the inner portions 8 of the upper edges 9 of the bust-receiving sections. The ends of the tape are secured as by stitching 19 to the elastic straps 4 at the corresponding endsof the main 105 portion 1. The portions of the tape between its ends and the middle portion which is secured to the main portion, are free and not connected to any part of the brassire. l

are slipped over the shoulders in the usual way, after which the main portion is tightly drawn about the figure and the fasteners 5 and 6 are connected. When the brassire is so applied to a figure, the U-shaped spreading member 12 presses and holds the breasts in spaced relation as shown in Figure 5, and at the same time the arms of the spreading member may slightly yield to prevent This resiliency, however, restrains the inner portions of the upper edges of the bust receiving sections from pulling apart in such a way as to slip over the breasts,

and accordingly the breasts are fully enclosed and gracefully molded into their natural contour.

The portions of the tape between the centerthereof and the ends underlie the breasts as clearly shown in Figures 4 and 5,. so as to lift and hold them in natural position, anddue to the connection of the ends of the tape to the elastic straps 4, the main portion 1 and bust-receiving sections 'I may yield to accommodate movements o f the body and without disturbing the tension on the tape 17, so as to reduce possibility of discomfort to the wearer and to avoid interference with the support to the bust afforded by the tape 17.

From the foregoing, it will be observed that the brassire embodying the invention effectually molds and holds the bust in its correct and natural shape and position, and at the same time will hold the breasts in spaced relation down to the upper edge of the main portion 1. Accordingly a dress having a low front extending down to approximately the upper edge of the main portion 1, may be worn with the assurance of a refined and graceful appearance.

It is advantageous that the tape 17 be connected to the main portion 1 adjacent the spreading member 12, since the tape then assists in holding the spreading member and the centralportion of the brassire from creeping upwardly on the figure, and this is especially desirable in the present Y case because it is one object of the invention to provide a brassire, the central portion of which shall be as low on the gure as is possible consistent with the molding and supporting of the bust.

The tension on the tape also draws the spreading member into tight contact with the figure so l as to accentuate the action of said member in separating the breasts.

Ifdesired, the brassire may be combined with a girdle or corset 20 as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. In this construction. the upper portion of the garment may be directly connected to the lower edges of the bust receiving sections, and the upper portion of the girdle may perform the function of the main portion 1 of the brassire.

While I have shown the brassire as embodying certain details of construction, it should be understood that this is primarily for the purpose of illustrating the principles of the invention and that many modifications and changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. Having thus described my invention, what I Aclaim is:

1. A brassire comprising a main portion to sections secured to the upper edge of said main portion in spaced relation to each other, and a U-shaped stiffening member having its base secured to said main portion between said bust receiving sections and its arms secured to and extending along the inner portions of the upper edges of said bust receiving sections.

2. A brassire comprising a belt-like main body to encircle the body below the bust, elastic means at each end thereof for connecting together the ends of said main portion, bust receiving sections secured to the upper edge of said main portion in spaced relation to each other, and a U-shaped resilient stiifening member having its base secured to said main portion at the top thereof between said bust receiving sections and its arms secured to and extending along the inner portions of the upper edges of said bust receiving sections, and a tape having its central portion connected to said main portion adjacent the upper edge of the latter between said bust receiving sections and its ends connected to the corresponding said elastic means.

3. A brassire comprising a belt-like main portion to encircle the body below the bust, elastic straps each having one end connected to one end of said main portion said tapes having cooperating separable fastener elements at`their other ends for securing the main portion on the body, bust-receiving sections secured to the upper edge of said main portion with their inner ends in spaced relation, and a tape to underlie and support the bust at the lower edge of each bust-receiving section attached adjacent the inner portion of the upper edge of the corresponding bustreceiving section and to said elastic strap at the corresponding end of the main portion in spaced relation to the main portion.
