Description

J. H. GONNELLY. Fire-Extinguishing Apparatus.
No. 196,632 Patented oct. 30,1377.

A hole, through which to llthe chamberB With Water, is provided, which may be separate, as at B2, or conne'ct With the opening through D. It'aseparate opening be used, it is provided with a screw-cap, plug, or valve, for sef curely closing it. Y

The cap D being screwed on, the apparatus is ready for use When required.
On opening the gate 1,'a portion of the biy carbonate of soda in the hopper D Will fall into the chamber B, and, uniting chemically with the sulphate of aluminum held in solution, carbonio-acid gas will be rapidly given oi'. As the quantity of such gas increases, it Will, being conined, exert a powerful pressure Within the inclosing-chamber. The cock a being opened, such pressure will be communicated to the hopper D on the upper side of its contents, which will not only balance the upward pressure through the gate d, but Will alsmassist inforcing such contents into the,
chambeB by reason of the increased area of its 'u'pp'er surface. I prefer, in practice, to use such an amount of the ingredients named as will furnish carbonic-acid gas in sufficient quantity to mix with the water in the chamber B, and give a pressure therein of about one hundred and ty pounds tothe square inch, more or less. The amount required Afor this purpose will, ofcourse, vary with the size of the chamber and the amount o i water contained therein. I prefer, however, to use the ingredients named" in about the proportions given-that is, two parts, by measure of sulphate of aluminum to one part, byflneasure, of bicarbonate of soda; but suchproportions may be Varied somewhat, and stilll'obtain useful results. f Thed'egree of pressure in the chamber B can, of course, be varied at pleasure; but under ordinary conditions I consider the pressure rifained desirable.' TI'f, atany time, the gage cv should indicate the required pressure before all the contents of the hopper D have passed to the chamber B, further'increase may, in a measure, be prevented by closing the gate d and cock a. hose R being attached to the pipe e by lneansof suitable coupling e2, and the cock el opened, the pressure within the chamber will force the mingled gas and water out through the'hose, by which it may be directed as de- Sirdi'".y Q
'This mitureof water and carbonio-acid fgas isvell known to `be very eiectual iu extinguishing fires', and' to possess marked advana'ges over either used alone, and such 'mixturfe se'ectually and economically secured by v the apparatus and ingredients described. The y yB, hopper D,valve"d i porfussulphate charged into the chamber B withth'e water is easily held in solution, and
' th'egranulated bicarbonate in the hopper D is' well adapted to chemically combine 'with 'tf e 'sulphate and rapidly give oi carbonic-acid e gas. The chemical reaction between these ingredients leaves no acid products'to injure either the apparatus or articles coming in con-V Y tact therewith, and this feature I consider a great advantage in favor of the ingredients named.

Under certain conditions it may be desirable to add to the water in the chamber B mui riate of ammonium, or.chloride of sodium, ,or both, in such quantities as to lbe readily soluble in the water employed;` Buch salts are not intended to aid inf-'generatinggasfbut, being held in solution by the water, they coat, as it were, the object uponwhich the water and gas are thrown, and render such object less inflammable.
