2 Claims.
This invention relates to broiler ovens for ranges and its object is to provide an improved broiler oven of simple durable construction and arrangement.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as the specification is considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective fragmentary view of a cooking range embodying a broiler oven proided with a slidable drawer according to the invention; v
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the braces for the front of the drawer;
Figure 3 is a perspective'view of the drawer showing the arrangement of the tracks at the bottom of the drawer;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the broiler compartment showing the bifurcated roller bearings and track arrangement cooperating with the drawer during sliding movement thereof; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary side view of the drawer showing the latch arrangement set to a partly open position 'of the drawer door.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the oven side of a range 2, which oven is preferably subdivided into an upper baking oven or compartment 3 and a lower broileroven or compartment 4. A drawer 5 comprising side walls 6, perforated bottom 7, rear end wall 8, and an open front end provided with a hinged door 9, is .slidably mounted within the broiler oven or compartment beneath broiling burners not shown. The latter are disposed in any desired manner in the upper portion of the broiler oven, just beneath the top 24 thereof. The side walls of the drawer are provided with ledges 10 adapted to slidably-support a conventional broiler pan 11. As the width and height of the drawer is considerably less than that of the broiler oven compartment, free circulation is provided on all sides thereof. Perforations 23, formed in the bottom of the drawer insure of the bifurcations-of the brackets 14 extend slightly above the periphery of rollers 13 and are so spaced that the tracks 12 slide snugly between and are guided by the bifurcations when the drawer is moved into or out of the broiler oven. A pair of substantially L-shaped fingers 'orlugs 16 mounted on the rear ends of the tracks, are adapted to engage between the bifurcations 14 and beneath the rollers 13 when the drawer is in withdrawn position, thus positively limiting the same against tipping. The drawer 5' is additionally guided and steadied by truss or track rod 17- detachably secured at opposite ends in bifurcated brackets 18 and 19 by means of bolts or the like -20, the brackets in turn being mounted on the broiler oven bottom 7. This rod operates through a bifurcated roller bracket and guide 21 depending centrally from the rear end of the broiler drawer bottom. The periphery of ball bearing roller 22 supported 7 in bracket 21 extends slightly beyond the lower bifurcated end of the latter for engagement with the upper face of the oven bottom, and this roller also engages the bottom edge of the truss rod 17. It will thus be seen that the roller 22 in addition to supporting the rear end of the drawer 5 on the oven bottom 7', in cooperation with truss rod 17, also prevents side sway and tipping of the drawer during withdrawal and when the latter is in partly withdrawn position 35 respectively. t
The tracks 12 are slightly curved upward at their forward or outer ends so that when the drawer is within say one half-inch of being closed there will be sufficient draw or rearward pull on rollers 13 to cause the drawer to close and remain in that position. Tracks 12 also add materially to the rigidity of the drawer.
A pair of vertically disposed straps or braces 26 secured to the outer ends of the side walls 6 of the drawer 5, brace the front of the drawer and also provide means for securing the door to the drawer. These straps are formed with an inwardly projecting flange 27 which engages and braces the bottom of the drawer, and with a de-- pending slotted portion or extension 28 which forms part of the' hinge connection for the door 9. Horizontally disposed arms 29 suitably mounted-on the inner face of door 9 and projecting inwardly or rearwardly therefrom are formed with laterally extending pins 30 which extend into the elongated vertical slots 31 of ex tension 28 to pivotally support the door. -When the door is swung to full open position, stop members or lugs 32 formed. on the inner lower edge of the arms'29 engage the braces 26 and thus serve to support the door in horizontal position.
Hook shaped latch members 33 also suitably mounted on the inner face of door 9 are provided with'two recesses or notches 34 and 35 adapted to engage locking pins 36 formed on the braces 26. Notches 34 maintain the front tightly closed, whereas when pins 36 are engaged in notches or recesses 35, the door 9 will be latched in partly open position. The latter adjustment has been found most desirable when the broiler is in use, in order that sumcient air may be admitted. through the front of the drawer to promote combustion and help force out smoke and smudge incident to broiling operations.
To open the door it is merely necessary to lift the door slightly to release'the locking pins 36 from one or the other of recesses 34--35, the
length of slots 35 being such that pivot pins 30 may be elevated therein sumciently during this operation to permit of the notched portions of latch members 33 being swung clear of pins 36.
Latching is effected automatically when the door pair of track members attached to its bottom wall for co-operation with the-roller brackets in the base of said oven and a bifurcated roller bracket mounted on the bottom of said drawer,
the roller of said latter bracket extending slightly beyond the ends of the bifurcations thereof and the space between said roller and the web of said bracket being dimensioned to permit said single track to be extended therethrough and providing a slidable interengagement between said latter track and said latter bracket, and permitting engagement of said roller with the bottom of said oven, and forwardly extending angular stop members on said drawer adapted to engage between the bifurcations of said roller brackets in the base of said oven when said drawer is fully extended.
2. In a cooking range, a broiler oven open at its front end, a plurality of bifurcated roller brackets mounted in the base of said oven, a single track secured in elevated position to said base and symmetrically with respect to said roller brackets, a broiler drawer slidable through said front end having a plurality of track members attached'to its bottom wall for cooperation with said roller brackets in the base of said oven and a bifurcated bracket mounted on the bottom of said drawer and slidably receiving said single track between its bifurcations, a roller projecting beyond the ends of said bifurcations and engaging the oven bottom and the bottom edge of said single track, angular members attached to the track members of said drawer close to the roller brackets to permit interlocking of the said angular members between the bifurcations of said brackets when said drawer is fully extended.
