JOSEPH COHEN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHAWL, PACKAGE, OR BOOK STRAP HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,345, dated September 18, 1877; application filed August 4, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH COHEN, of the city of Newark, county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Shawl, Package, or Book Strap Handles, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to make a shawl, package, or book strap handle ot'a novel shape and construction, as hereinafter described, and to cast the same in one piece, without having any joints, rivets, or other means of joining together the several parts thereof.
My handle consists of the main curved upper part A, having at its two ends slots forming the eyes a. Under the part A is a brace, B, shaped like an inverted arch, forming an elliptical opening, through which the fingers of the hand pass. When it is desired to have three straps attached to a handle a slot or eye, 12, is formed at the center of this under brace B. When but two straps are to be used the two slots or eyes a, at the ends of the upper portion, are sufficient.
a a are two shoulders, formed for the purpose of covering the center of the upper part with leather, textile fabric, or other material, so that the hand does not grasp the naked metal. These shoulders form a slight recess, so that the covering will, where it terminates, show a fiush finish.
My handle is made of metal, the upper part, the under brace, the eyes, and the shoulders being all cast in one piece at once, thus obviatin g the connecting together of several parts, being complete, Without any mortising, joining, riveting, or soldering, as soon as it comes out of the mold. The handle is afterward ornamented as taste or convenience may require, and the portion between the shoulders a a are covered with leather or any suitable material.
What I claim is- A shawl, package, or book strap handle composed of the upper part A, the under inverted arched brace B, the open eyes a a, and the shoulders a a, all cast in one piece, forming a handle complete in all its parts without any rivets or joints, substantially as described.
JOSEPH COHEN.
