Application December 13, 1933, Serial No. 702,914 11 Claims. (Cl. 132-32) The present invention relates to eyelash curler particularly adapted for feminine use in beautifying establishments and in the home.

Many devices for this purpose have been made but they all have proven impractical or cumbersome and difficult to handle and manipulate and have proven unsatisfactory in that frequently they would break or cut the hairs of the eyelash.

They all included complementary rigid, though sometimes cushioned, jaws and invariably required considerable and maintained manual pressure to be applied to the device to produce the desired results.

Hence an object of the invention is the provision of an improved means for curling or bending the eyelashesand to overcome the above diiiculties and one which can be very conveniently and easily applied to and removed from the lashes between the curling or forming elements, which are simple and easy to operate and which are extremely compact and of simple and economical construction. K

A further object is to provide an eyelash curler, the handle of which may be rmly grasped in the hand and the thumb utilized to move one of the clamping members to or from the other.

Another object of the invention resides in the provision, 'in an instrument for curling lashes,

of a movable resilient and stretchable clamping 3G member adapted to be slid past a lip portion on the fixed clamping member to grip the eyej lash therebetween and to retain said gripping engagement until manually released by withdrawal of the moving clamp member. 4

y A further object is to provide, in an eyelash curler, a movable clamp member in the form of a close wound coil spring whichv may becovered by a yieldable `and stretchable casingl for the purpose of subjecting the eyelid of ythe user to a minimum of pull and abuse. I f

A further object is to provide in a device of the purpose, a rigid forming element and a cooperating resilient element both of which may be interlocated over an eyelash with constant though yielding pressure, and which may thus be retained on the lash without the application of manual pressure to properly and effectively curl or bend the lashes.

In its general organization this device comprises a rigid curved forming element, and a cooperating resilient forming element, the rigid element being mounted on the end of a hollow handle, and the ends of the resilient element lbeing anchored adjacent the ends ofl the rigid element,` with the centre of the resilient element engaged with a slide operable within the hollow handle and having a manipulating button ex- Y, tending through a slot in the handle, the rigid element having a forming or bending iange over which the resilient element interengages.

These advantageous features are accomplished by the novel and practical construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter disclosed and illustrated 'in the accompanying drawing, constituting an essential part of the 35* disclosure, and in which: u

The .device is preferably made of metal parts though other materials suitable for the purpose may be employed.

A handle is provided which is preferably formed of the handle portion 5 and an extension 6 of the head portion 7. The portion 5 is preferably provided with flanged side and bottom portions 8 and riveted at 9 and. 10 to vthe extension 6 to form a hollow 1l within the handle. For the 'purposes of strength and rigidity a reinforcing .inember 12 may be incorporated as shown.

The head 7 is preferably curved as shown to the normal curvature of an eyelid andis provided with the opening 13 formed by the upright member 14, the arched clampingk member-15 and the portion 16 adjacent the extension 6. The uprights 14 may be made-rigid by providing portions such as the angled extension 17.

The lower portion of the arched clamping member 14 is preferably formed with a lip portion 18 the purpose of which will be later made clear.

`A movable clamp member 19 is provided in the form of a close wound coil spring or any other resilient material anchored vat its ends to the head as at 20 and this member, if a coil spring, is preferably covered by a'I resilient and stretchablecasing, covering or sheath 21.

Movement of the clamp member 19 is eiected through the medium of ja slide member 22 fastened thereto at 23. The slide is provided with a slot 24 so the slide may be guided in its movements by the rivet 9 and is also provided with a im.;

thumb engaging knob 25 at its end within the hollow 11, the shank 26 of which may be moved along the slot 27 formed in the members 6 and 12. In operation the instrument is held in one hand and positioned in'relation to the eye so the. 1W

will, through the medium of the slide 22, cause the clamping member 19 to iirst engage against the bottom of the eyelash and then to snap over the lip 18 to grip the hairs of the eyelash effectively between itself and the member 15. It will be noticed that at no time is there any movement of the clamping member 15 and there cannot be, therefore, any pull on the eyelid, the eyelash being nicely and gently curled over the lir 18 and clamped. The clamping pressure neer; not be retained since the members will retain their clamping position until a downward push on the knob 25 releases them.

While the drawing `illustrates the slide as operating within the hollow 11 of the handle, itvwill be understood that, the handle may be made solid and the slide 22 will then operate along the outside of the handle.

It will also be understood that the slide 22 might' if desired, be altogether eliminated and in such case the thumb or finger of the user may be utilized to manipulate the resilient clamping member 19.

From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple device for the purpose has been disclosed in the preferred form of its embodiment, but it is not desired to restrict the details to the exact constructionA shown, it being obvious that changes, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made without departing from the'scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure Aby Letters Patent, is:

1. A11 eyelash curler comprising a fixed 'clamp member, a resilient and stretchable movable clamp member and means to move one clamp member in relation to the other.

2. An eyelash curler comprising a handle, a clamp member fixed theretofaA resilient` and stretchable clamp member and means attached ythereto and associated with the handle to move the last mentioned clamp member to and from the other clamp member.

3. In an eyelash curler a fixed'clamp member, a lip on the lower portion thereof, a resilient and stretchable clamp member, and means to removably engage the movable clamp member over the said lip.

4; In an eyelash curler a fixed clamp member, a lip on the lower portion thereof, a resilient and stretchable movable clamp member having its ends connected adjacent the ends of the fixed clamp members, and means wherebythe movable clamp member may be moved to engage over the said 11p. 80

5. In an eyelash curler a fixed curved and arched clamp member, a lip on the lower portion thereof, a. resilient and stretchable movable clamp member and means to engage the movable clamp member over the said lip.

6. In an eyelash curler a xed curved and arched clamp member, a lip on the lower portion thereof, a resilient and stretchable movable clamp member having its ends connected adjacent the ends of the fixed clamp members, and means whereby the movable clamp member may be moved to engage over the said lip.

7. An eyelash curler comprising a hollow handle, a curved and arched clamp member iixed thereto, a lip on the lower portion thereof, aresilient and stretchable movable clamp member having its ends connected adjacent the ends of the fixed clamp member, aslide attached to an intermediate portion of the movable clamp member and adapted tg slide within the hollow of the handle and a knob adapted to be manually moved whereby the movable clamp member may beY engaged over the said lip.

8. In an eyelash curler a fixed clamp member,

a lip on the lower portion thereof, a resilient and stretchable movable clamp member, a resilient and stretchable casing or sheath; over the movable member, and means to engage the movable clamp lmember over the said lip.

9. In an eyelash curler a fixed clamp member, a lip on the lower 'portion thereof, a resilient and stretchable movable clamp member having its end connected adjacent the ends of Vthe fixed. clamp member, a resilient and stretchable casing over the movable member, and means whereby the movableclamp member may be moved to engage over the said lip.

10. In an eyelash curler a iixed clamp member,

a lip over the lower portion thereof and a resilient Y and stretchable clamp member adapted to be removably engaged over said lip.

11. In an eyelash curler a fixed clamp member,

a lip on the lower portion thereof, and a resilient and` stretchable clamp member having its ends anchored adjacent the ends of the fixed clamp member, said resilient member .being adaptedto be removably engaged over said lip.
