PERAZZOLI GRINDING APPARATUS Filed May 5, 1935 Patented Mar. 6, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFicE This invention relates to new and useful improvements in grinding devices for railway track rails and has particular relation to auxiliary devices driven by a primary grinder for Working on track rails.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which may be clamped to the track rail and operated independently of the grinding operation being performed by the primary grinder.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which is particularly adaptable to joint or cut-off work in contrast to the customary flat surface grinding of the primary machine.
A further object is to provide a device as described which may be connected or disconnected from the primary machine at will and when not in use may be stowed and carried on the latter.
The invention contemplates certain other features and details of construction and operation set forth hereinafter and disclosed in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the device constituting the present invention mounted on a track rail and operatively connected to a primary grinder; and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view in section on line '2--2, Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the device comprises a pair of longitudinal support members 1 and 2 of substantially inverted L cross section shape. The depending arm of the support member 1 has its edge turned in the direction of the member 2 so as to engage the underside of the head portion of the rail, and a bolt 3 having a lock nut 4 is mounted in the depending web of the support member 2. It will be noticed therefore that when the bolt 3 is tightened against the head of the rail the inturned web on the other member 1 grips the underside of the head and firmly secures the device in position on said rail.
An understanding frame including top and bottom horizontal members 5 and 6 and uprights 7 and 8, all respectively, is mounted on and at one end of the support members 1 and 2 and transversely with respect thereto.
A carriage supporting frame A is mounted on the frame just previously described and comprises tubular end members 9 and 10, which are slidably mounted on the uprights 7 and 8, respectively, the upper and lower ends of each of the tubular sliding members being connected respectively by cross pieces 11 and 12 constituting runners for a transversely movable carriage 13. The carriage frame A is normally held in raised position with respect to the track rail on its frame by means of springs 13a which are connected between the latter and the carriage frame, and a handle or lever 11a is pivotally connected at one end to the main frame and at its center to an arm 12a secured to and projecting above the carriage frame A for the purpose of feeding the latter and consequently the abrasive wheel downwardly into contact with the track rail.
In the present instance rollers la having a peripheral groove to receive the runners 11 and 12 are mounted in bearings 15 at the top and bottom of said carriage and a lever or handle 16 is secured to the latter to facilitate manual movement of said carriage transversely of the track rail on said runners 11 and 12.
A housing 1'7 is nxedly mounted on the car riage 13 by means of bolts 18 and a pair of stud shafts 19 and 20 are rotatably mounted, one above the other, in said housing by means of bearings 21. Gears 22 and 23, respectively, are mounted on the adjacent ends of the shafts 19 and 20 and meshed so that the rotation of one is imparted to the other. An abrasive or cut-off wheel 24 is fixed on the other end of the shaft 20 from the gear 23 and the other end of the shaft 19 is connected by means of a coupling to one end of a exible shaft 25, the other end of which is ar ranged for connection with a source of rotary movement.
The abrasive element 24 is fed vertically into contact with the track rail by means of the handle 11a, which acts through the arm 12a to lower the carriage support A against the action of the springs 13a, transverse Amovement of said element 24 being effected through the handle 16 to actuate the carriage 13 transversely with respect to the track rail on the runners 11 and 12 constituting the longitudinal members of the carriage support A.
While the preferred construction of the present invention has been set forth for the purpose of description, it is not intended that the device be limited thereto except such as is beyond the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A grinding device for track rails, including in combination a base, means for clamping said base to the rail, a housing adjustably supported with respect to said base, an abrasive Wheel operatively carried by said housing transversely of said rail, and means operable to feed said housing and abrasive wheel transversely of said rail.
2. A grinding device for track rails, including in combination a base, means for clamping said base to the rail, a housing adjustably supported with respect to said base, an abrasive wheel operatively carried by said housing transversely of said rail, and means operable to feed said housing and abrasive Wheel vertically into contact with said rail.
3. A grinding device for track rails, including in combination a base, means for clamping said base to the rail, a housing adjustably supported with respect to said base, an abrasive wheel operatively carried by said housing transversely of said rail, means operable to feed said housing v'and abrasive Wheel transversely of said track, and means operable to feed the housing and abrasive Wheel vertically into contact with the rail.
4. A grinding device for track rails, 'including in combination a base, a support mounted transversely thereon, a bracket carried by said support and movable vertically with respect thereto, a car- 'priage mounted on rollers in said bracket and movable longitudinally thereof transversely to the rail, a housing xedly carried by said carriage, an
feeding the housing and abrasive element both vertically and transversely of said rail.
5. A grinding device for track rails, including in combination a base, a support mounted transversely thereon, a bracket carried by said support and movable vertically with respect thereto, a carriage mounted in said bracket and movable longitudinally thereof transversely to the rail, a housing iixedly carried by said carriage, an abrasive element operatively mounted in said housing transversely of said rail, and means for feeding the housing and abrasive element both vertically and transversely of said rail.
6. A grinding device for track rails, including in combination a base, means for clamping said base to the rail, a support mounted transversely Vvthereon, a bracket carried by said support and movable vertically with respect thereto, a carriage mounted in said bracket and movable longitudinally thereof transversely to the rail, a housingxedly carried by said carriage, an abrasive element operatively mounted on said housing transversely of said rail, and means for feeding the housing and abrasive element both vertically and transversely of the rail.
