This invention relates to an adjustable template for jambs and frames, the general object of the invention being to provide a template for truing rough door or window openings so that the required frame can be put in accurately and at a saving of time.
This invention also consists in certain other features-of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference Will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like charactersl denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:-
Figure 1 is an elevation showing theinvention in use.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the invention.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a detailed view. looking toward the under face of the upper part of the device.
As shown in these drawings, the template 'comprises a pair of side members A each of than the other straight edge 1 as shown in Figs.
1 and 3, and the upper and lower extension arms B.
Each of these horizontal extension arms B consists of a pair of , members 3 and 4 having their tinner ends overlapping and slidably connected together by the U-shaped extension arm holders 5. The outer ends of the members 3 and 4 are connected to the vertical side members A as shown at 6; with the ends of the members inserted between the straight edges l and 1 of the side members as shown in Fig. 3. Member 4 of each horizontal extension arm is formed with an elongated clearance slot as shown at 7, this clearance slot serves both as a guide slot, and clearance slot for the plumb-line. Said member is provided with a row of adjustment holes 9 and an elongated adjustment slot 12.
On the side of the member 4 is a scale 17 de- 'signed especially for standard door sizes. The -member 3 or" each horizontal extension arm is formed similar to member 4 with the following exceptions; in the member the adjustment slot 12 and the row of adjustment holes 9 are replaced by two holes; one for the adjustment pin 10 and Athe other for the wing nut locking bolt 11. The
AnL-shaped bracket 13 is fastened to the under side of the top member 3 as shown in Fig. 4, said bracket having a slot 14 therein for receiving the knotted plumb bob line 15, the weight of which is shown at 16 of Fig. 1. The slot 14 in said bracket is set or fastened in line with the zero line 20 of member 3.
It will be understood that the template is placed in a rough door or window opening, and used for truing the opening so that after the template is removed, the door jamb or window frame can be set in place accurately and in the minimum amount of time; particularly in the placing of modern constructed interior finish trim or panel work where split jambs are used.
As will be understood, the vertical side members A are adjusted to any desired distance apart by means of the horizontal extension arms B. The adjustment is made by setting the zero line or" each member 3 to the required line on the special scale on member 4 and inserting the adjustment pin 10 in one of the holes 9 as shown in Fig. 1. The plumb bob line will indicate when the template is in a plumb position.
The vertical straight edges 1 and 1 are separated by the horizontal spacing blocks 2 and the outer ends of the members 3 and 4. The said horizontal spacing blocks hold the vertical straight edges square and plumb. The vertical straight edges are separated for two reasons, iirst, to hold the template square with the wall line, secondly, to provide a space for nailing so that the ller blocks or wedges W can be nailed in the rough opening to a square and true line without interference from said straight edges. The rear straight edge l' is made wider than the front straight edge 1 to provide additional strength and to allow for the hand holds 21 as shown in Fig. l.
As will be seen the template can be adjusted to suit various widths of door and window openings. The holes 9 are placed two inches apart in each member 4 to receive the pin l0, the adjusting Wing nut locking bolt 11 being used to hold the members 3 and 4 in adjusted position when the width of the door or window openings deviate from standard size. The cleats or anchor blocks 18 are fastened to the side of the vertical straight edges l to hold the template square and plumb in the opening as shown in Fig. 1.
The operation of the template is as follows:- The template is adjusted tc the required size of opening to receive the jamb or frame by remov- -ing the adjustment pins 10 and loosening the wing nut locking bolts 11 and setting the zero line of each member 3 to the proper point on the special scale of member 4, thus moving the vertical straight edges A to or from each other to give the required Width of opening. Each adjusting pin l0 is replaced in the proper hole 9 when the opening is standard size. If the opening required is not of standard size, the wing nut locking bolts ll engaged in the slots 12 are used to hold the template to the required width. After `the template has been thus adjusted to the proper Width it is placed in the rough door or window opening and set plumb by means of a plumb line and held square and plumb by means of the anchor blocks or cleats 18. These anchor blocks or cleats are fastened temporarily to the wall to hold the template in said position. With the template in this position the filler blocks or wedges W are tted betweeny the vertical straight;V
edges and the walls of the rough opening and nailed or fastened.
The template is now removed from the opening and the required jamb or frame is slipped into the trued opening and secured in said opening without further truing. This template is especially adapted to the modern construction of interior trim and panel work where split jambs are used, with the nished casing or panel Work attached to the jambs. I find it is almost impossible to true up an opening where the casings are attached to the split jamb without this template.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and changes and novel eatures of the invention Will'be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A template for setting the ller blocks of a door or window frame in a door or window opening comprisingv a pair o side members each consisting of a pair of spaced straight edges for engaging the ller blocks, upper and lower pairs of horizontal cross members having their outer ends connected with the side members and extending between the said straight edges, means for adjustably connecting the members of each pair of horizontal cross members together to adjust the side members towards or away from each other, each horizontal member having a longitudinal slot therein and one member of each pair of horizontal members having a scale thereon and a zero mark on the other member of the pair, a slotted bracket fastened to the under face of the lower horizontal member of the upper pair and a bob line held in the slot of said bracket and passing through thel slots of the members of the lower pair.
