Description

Jan. 2, 1934. w. F. KISPERT FLANGE CONSTRUCTION Filed Feb. 21, 1930 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented'lan. 2, 1934 FLANGE CONSTRUCTION William F. Kispert, Green Bay,
Application February 21, 1930. Serial No. 430,340
1 Claim.
The invention relates to a flange construction, and more especially to a pipe flange connection.
The primary object of the invention is the pro- I vision of a connection of this character, wherein the base of a closet bowl or other floor fixture and a waste or soil pipe can be united in a novel manner with dispatch and without liability of" leakage at the juncture.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a connection of this character, wherein the junction flange for the waste or soil pipe can be laid in a foundation or flooring of cementitious material without requiring any chiseling or breaking away of the foundation or flooring at the time of the joining of the base of a closet bowl or other fixture to the soil or waste pipe, said vision of a connection of this character, which is extremely simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and efiicient in its purpose, strong, durable, readily and easily set in a foundation, rendering the joint between a pipe and bowl or other fixture leak proof, and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in. view the in,- vention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which shows the preferred embodiments of the invention, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:" 7
Figure 1 is a fragmentary"sectionalview taken vertically through va foundation or flooring showing a portion of a waste or soil pipe and closet bowl connected together through the medium of the flange construction in accordance with the invention, the flange being partly in section.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the flange, showing the fasteners in section.
Figure 3 is an edge or side elevation.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary plan view showing the protective member covering the pocket in the flange.
Figure 5 is a sectional View taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a plan view showing the assemblage in Figure 1, and the protective member in place.
Figure '7 is a sectional view taken on the line 7-7 of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a view similar to Figure 7, showing the protective member opening the pocket in the flange.
Figure 9 is a sectional view on the line 99 of Figure'S.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail A, designates generally a portion of a foundation or flooring, in this instance made from cement or other materiaL'B, a portion of a waste or soil pipe, and C, the base flange of a closet bowl which is adapted to be joined or connected with the pipe.
The flange constructionconstituting the pres"- ent invention comprises a casting forming'an inverted conical shaped collar-like member 10, V which is located at the proper'grade according to the thickness of the foundation or flooring, being embedded therein'and surrounds the upper end of the pipe B, as is clearly shown in Figure 1, of the drawing.
Formed at diametrically opposite sides and exteriorly of this member 10, are pockets 11, these being located at the upperportion of said member and are open at their tops as at 12, while at the upper edge of said member 10, is an outturned annular flange or rim 13, the same being extended across the pockets 11, but said flange or rim is of less width than the pockets and the portions 14 extended across the latter being slightly cut-away. V
The cut-away portions 14, are provided withv notches 15, for accommodating the shanks 16, of hold-down bolts 17, these being of the headed type and carry nuts 18. The heads of the bolts 17, under-lie the portions 14, which latter serve as retaining ears for the bolts. These bolts are passed upwardly through suitable ways in the base flange C, of the closet bowl and the 'nuts 18, on the bolts serve to secure the bowl in place and connect with the waste or soil pipe B.
To make secure the member 10, about the pipe B, and in the foundation A, an oakum packing 19, or a pounded lead filling is introduced between the said pipe B, and the member 10. It is to be understood that both the packing and lead filling may be employed.
In Figures 4 to 9, inclusive there is shown a slight modification of the invention, in that the member 20, which corresponds to the member l 10, has attached at diametrically opposite sides pocket like shields 21, these being located at each notch 22, in the flange 23, and each shield is formed with a removable cover or lid 24, which can be turned back or broken off to expose the notch over which normally the said cover or lid lies. It will be apparent that the shield which is preferably made from pressed steel forms the pocket for the bolt head and allows easy engagement of the bolt in the notch 22, when the cover or lid 24, is turned back or broken off.
In the pouring of the concrete or cement when making the foundation or flooring the member 10 or 20, is entirely surrounded with said concrete or cement and the place for theholdedown bolts in the flange of said memberisprotected,
and thereby eliminates the necessity of digging or chiseling out these localities which sometimes results in breaking the member constituting the flange and in all cases making additional work. Should it be found expedient the member 10 or 20, may be made fast to the pipe B, by threading it thereon or otherwise. v
What is claimed is: V A shield;f0r hold-down devices for sewerage and toilet fixtures, comprising a pocket forming member countersunk in a foundation for access through its surface, and a lid or cover integral with the member, normally closing the pocket "therein at the level of the foundation and bendable awayfrom normalcy to expose said pocket.
