metal framing, the prime requisite being.
strength and rigidity. One of the objects of my present construction is to provide a tran som bar for association with two parallel metal frame members which is capable of being installed readily by unskilled labor and which possesses strength and rigidity of the same degree as if the two frame members and the transom bar were of one piece.
A further object of my invention is to provide a transom bar that may becompletely fabricated at the shop and shipped with the.
frame members in knocked down condition,
y and the transom bar permanently attached to the upright frame members merely by the use of common tools.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspectiveview showing the transom bar of my invention associated with one of the upright frame members;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view showing in detail the means of attaching the transom bar to the vertical frame members; and i 1 Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the transombar taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
By reference to the drawings it will be seen that I have shown but one of the two vertical frame members since both sides may be considered duplicates forthe purpose of this description.
My invention comprises substantially the channel shaped vertical frame member 10 having a door stop 11 and jamb 12. The transom bar of my invention is of relatively simple construction being formed hollow and of substantially T-shape'in cross-section.
The. transom bar'is' formed of two strips ofsheet metallBJ-ll one stripsl lpbeing adapted to "fit over the narrow portion of the 'strip 13fthi1s"closiiig thel:otherwise open The shank'of the T as ,welli'as' tlie portion 14' overlapping the 3 same is of a slightly greater width than the portion as best show'n 'i'n The sect'1onsl31 4.are joined together by thecombined joining bar'and biabe' 15 which y "isfwe'ldedtothe inside qr thefrespectiv iiarts} inear-tlie' end of thetransombar. The ba i5 theoutsi de face of t'h e" brace 1511" provide a right angul'aily disposed strip 20 150 which is I welded ;a stove bolt 21 which passes through a registering aperture in one side of the door I Q to" i To" insure added-i stability at'.the ends of V the transom bar, and also to provide a sim- 1 pie and e iipedient methodof properly positioiiiiigthe bar for the -reception of the securmeans; provide the U shaped angle" member '23; thef'ace. of'wliich isiwelded-"as I indicated in Fig 3; to the face of the frame member adjacent the' doo-r stopfat an de- "sired point in itslength. Theb'entwings 2 V stop 11.
and 2 5 pro-j ect outwardly from '-the"f ranie and "are adapted tomakeatfight, slid'ingfit with "the inside of the hollow edgeofthe transom bar, thus'ins'urifi'g a quick and ready inanfabric'ated' transomba r is" set inTpl'a'ceby 'firstfsliding the hollow part" 14, jotfer the 'latiq of th transomba-r'. The member is also provided' witha suitably placedapen' ture to register with the aperture in the frame,'--tlirou'gh which the' bolt 18 passes.
Assuming that the two vertical frame members ha-Ve'been temporarily set the,
wings 24,251theninsertingthe bolt 21 in the {aperture at the side" of the" door stop,fthis bolt being gsi'litably'i fastened by'v the nut 22.
Thereafter, the bolts 18 19"areinserted through the proper apertures" and areres'pe'ctive'ly' in the cross bar 153 Thef transom the cooperating securing means are visible from the outside. Thereafter brick or tile are built up around and inside the vertical frame members and the entire securing means thus hidden from sight.-
It is thus readily'seen that I have provided I a transom bar forv metalframe ,members which issimple and economically manufacas indicated in the appended claims.
I claim 1'. The combination with a metal frame and jamb having a longitudinal rib acting as a stop, of a sheet metal transom bar of hollow construction projectingbetween alpair ofy frames a transverse anchor fixed withinthe V I hollowibar near anend', and a screw projecting through the 'jamb from the back and having engagement with said anchor.
2. The combination with a metal frame;
transom barbeing hollow and of generally v. Tr'shap in -section, and adapted to be secured at eachjend thereof tosaid jambs,
. {a transverseanchor within said transom bar near an end thereof, and means passing through said metal frame and engaging said anchor for positioning and securing saidtransom bar. I e
v3-. In metal frame construction, the com bination with a pair of vertically disposed members from the rear thereof for securing said transom bar, the arms of the head of the T acting as stops for a transom and a door.
, i 5. In metal frame construction, the combination with a pair of vertically disposed metal, frame members having a amb and a longitudinalribfacting as a door stop,of a
hollow T-shaped metal transom bar, a transversely'disposed anchor within said transom bar near theend's thereof, the head and shank portions of-the T-shaped transom bar having respective widths substantially the same as said longitudinal rib, and jamb portions of said frametmembers, the arms of said head portion acting as stopsfor a transom and a door,jand meanspassing through the frame members from' the back thereof for screw threaded engagement with said anchors whereby'to positionand secure said transom.-
. In testimony whereof I havef aflixed my gna r if ISAAC A. BAU Q;
and jamb having a'longitudinal ribactingas V g V a stop, of a sheet metal transom bar, .said
metal frame'vmembers, having a jamb and a t I 'longitudinalrib acting as a door stop,-of a hollow T-shaped -metal transomv bar, said transom bar having a transversely dis osed anchor therein near each end thereo the portion correspondingto the head of the T.
I of saidtransom bar being of a width substan- .tially that of said longitudinal rib, and the portion of said transom Vbar corresponding to the shankof the I having a width sub stantially thatlo f. the'jamb of said frame members, and means passing through saidY frame members from the rear thereof for se- 7 curl ng said transom bar; i 4. In metal frame construction, the combination .with a pair of vertically disposed metal frame members, having a j amb and a longitudinal rib acting as a door stop, of a hollow 'T-shaped metal transom bar, saidv transom bar having a transverselydis osed anchor therein near each end thereo the portion corresponding to they head of the T of said transom bar being of a width substan- Y tially that of said longitudinal rib, and the portion of said transom bar corresponding to 'the shank of the T having awidth substanatiallythat of the jamb of said frame mem- 1 bers' and means passing through saidframe
