This invention relates to tops for metal furniture, and more particularly to a novel edge construction for providing a finished edge and side for counter'height sections,
" 3 a metal desks, tables and the like.
A primary object of the invention is to provide a simple,- practical and reliable means for concealing the edge of the linoleum surface usually used on metal tops, and to also provide a finished appearance for the flange of the top below thebead portion which both protects and conceals the edge of the linoleum. r
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction consisting of a minimum number of parts which may be readily assembled and held in their applied or fixed positions by the mere act of assembling the same in telescopic relation.
With the above and other objects in view 7 which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts here inafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1' is a sectional perspective view illustrating the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross sectional view illustrating the manner of assembling.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the combined facing and locking strip.
Similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, the table top T is covered by a suitable surfacing of linoleum or the like designated generally as L, and the said top T is provided with down-turned flange T which depends from the lower edge of the linoleum surface. To provide a bead strip and also a facing to finish the edge of the top, the present invention contemplates the use of a novel bead strip A and a combined facing and locking strip B.
Referring first to the bead strip A it will be observed that the same includesarounded head portion 1 and a depending flange or body 2. The rounded'head portion 1 is joined with the flange 2 by an angular or-substantially horizontal connecting wall 3, and the latter isprovided in the angle formed be tween itself and the outer surface of the flange 2 with a locking groove 4.
The combined locking and facing strip B is of substantially U-shaped or channel forma-'.
tion and is made of relatively heavy resilient metal. As shown in the drawings, this strip includes the inner and outer walls 5 and 6 respectively, the same being connected by the web7 and-the former having the-out-turned guiding portion 5a. while the latter is provided at its upper free edge with'the inwardly oifset locking rib 8 adapted to fit into the keeper groove 4 v 7 As shown in Fig. Sthe strip B is made so that initiallythe walls 5 and 6' converge to provide a relatively constricted mouth or throat portion C between the inner edge of the rib 8 and the inner surface of the guiding portion 5a. Thus, when the strip is applied to the flange T of the table top and the portion 2 of the beadstrip, it is placed under tension to hold the parts tightly assembled.
By reference to Fig. 2 it will be observed thatthe bead strip A is placed beside the flange '1" of the table top, and then the combined locking and facing strip B is moved upwardly, that is, into telescopic relation to said members until the locking rib 8 registers with the keeper groove 4. Aspreviously indicated, the walls 5 and 6 of the combined locking and facing strip are made so that the entrance end of the channel member is narrower than the base, thereby keeping the entire locking strip under permanent tensionwhen it is engaged with the flange of thetable' top and the body of the bead strip.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the present invention includes a minimum number of parts namely, the bead strip A andthe combined locking and facing strip B whichmay be moved into assembled relation by the mere actof fitting the facing strip over the flange of the top and the body portion of the beadstrip. Also, the innerlocked relation of the bead strip and the facing strip serves to securely hold the bead V strip in position so that in the applied posiskilled in the art, and it will of course be understood that changes in the form, proportion and minor details of Construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention and scope of the appended claims.
I claim 1. In an edge construction for furniture tops, thecombination with the top having a flange, of a beadstrip having, a keeper groove .and a combined facing and locking strip including opposite resilient walls, one of said walls being provided with an outwardly turned guiding lip and the other being formed with an inturned locking bead adapted to fit into said groove when the parts are in assembled relation.
2. An edge construction for furniture tops comprising in combination with the top having a down-turned flange and a layer of surfacing materlal on the top, of a bead strip having a portion concealing the edge of the surface material for the top and also having a vertical body portion lying next to said flange, and a combined facing and locking .strip movable in a direction parallel to the said down-turned flange to telescopically engage with said flange and the body of the bead strip.

An edge construction for furniture tops comprising in combination with the top havin; a down-turned flange and a layer of sur facing material on the top, of a bead strip having a portion concealing the edge of the surface material for the top and also having able in a direction parallel to the down turned flange to telescopically fit over the body of the bead strip and the depending flange to hold the bead strip in position.

An edge construction for furniture tops comprising in combination with the top having a down-turned flange and a layer of surfacing material thereon, of a bead strip hav ing a bead portion for concealing the edge of the surface material on the top and also having a depending body portion and a groove formed between the body portion and the bead portion, and a single resilient channel member movable in a direction parallel to the said down-turned flange to telescopically fit over the body of the bead strip and said flange, and an inturned rib carried by one edge of the channel member and adapted to flt in said groove of the bead strip.
6. In an edge construction for furniture tops, the combination with the down-turned flange of the top member and a bead strip overlying the face of said flange, of a single channel-shaped member having resilient side walls adapted to telescopically fit over and engage said flange and strip by movement in a direction parallel to said flange.
