Z5 y, dan,... Q f W WW' JAMES P. OSGOOU s. co BOSTON UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. PARKER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM M. PARKER, OF NEW YORK CITY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BURGLAR-ALARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,203, dated October 10, 1876; application filed March 31, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. PARKER, of the city ot Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Burglar-Alarms, which improvement is fully set forth in the following speciication, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a sectional front view of my alarm. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
rEhis invention relates to an improvement on that class of burglar-alarms which I have described in my Patent N o. 167,559, dated September 7, 1875 5 the object of my present improvement being to simplify the construction of my alarms, to reduce their cost, and to facilitate the operation of applying them to doors or windows.
The alarm-releasing slide is provided with a notch in its edge, and it is subjected to the action of a single spring, which has a tendency to throw the slide out, and which, when said slide is depressed, serves to throw the notch in the edge of the slide in gear with the edge of the guide-slot in the case.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the bed-plate, on which is secured a spring-power alarm, B, that, when wound up and allowed to run, sounds a bell, C. The motion of this alarm can be stopped by means of a lever, D, the position of which is controlled by a slide, E, which moves on the bed-plate A, being guided by a groove, a, in said bed-plate, and by a slot, b, in a plate, c, which is fastened to said plate in a position at right angles to the same. In the edge of the slide is a notch, d, and said slide is subjected to the action of a spring, e, which has a tendency to raise the slide, and which, when the slide is depressed, throws the notch d of the slide in gear with the edge of the guide-slot b, said spring being applied in such a position that it exerts both an upward and a lateral strain on the slide. From the face of the slide projects a lug, h, which, when said slide is depressed, retains the lever D in a position to stop the alarm;
but when the slide is permitted to rise, the lug h releases the stop-lever D, and the alarm is free to run.
The alarm is covered by a case, F, which is secured to the bed-plate A, and in this case is a hole, to admit the thick portion of the shank of a thumb-screw, G, while in the bed-plate is a hole just large enough to allow the thin portion of said shank to pass, and on this shank is formed a shoulder, m, which, when the screw is screwed up in the door or any other part, bears against the surface ot' the bedplate, and retains the alarm firmly in position. In the door-frame is secured a pin, i, which, when the door is closed, prevents the slide E from moving out; but when the door is opened, so that the outer end of the slide clears the pin i, said slide follows the action of its spring, the stop-lever D is released, and the alarm sounds.
When it is desired to stop the alarm the slide E is depressed, so that its notch d drops in gear with the edge of the guide-slot, where it is retained by the action of its spring e.
The position in which my alarm is to be secured to a door or window will readily suggest itself, and requires no further explanation.
I disclaim in this application for a patent everything shown and described in my Patent No. 167,559, above mentioned.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'Ihe combination, with an alarm, B, of a slide, E, having a notch, d, in its edge, a spring, e, which exerts an upward and a lateral strain on said slide, a slot, b, for guiding the slide, and retaining the same when it is depressed, a lug, It, and stop-lever D, all constructed and operating substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 24th day of March, 1876.
