Description
E. W. ALLEN ct 2U, i931.
SHOE
Filed June lO. 1929 Patented Oct. 20, 1931' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE' ELBEBT W. ALLEN', OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN SHOE Application led .Tune 10,
construction whereby a finished cushion effeet is produced at the heel of the shoe without the appearance of nailsor tacks.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a shoe having an iifnproved cushion effect for the foot.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication, and in which Fig. 1 is a vertical, longitudinal section taken'substantially on line 1--1 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 2 a horizontal section taken substantially on line 2 2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 a section taken substantially on lin 3-3 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 a transverse section taken substantially on line l--et of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 a perspective view of a clinch plate employed in the construction.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings comprises a shoe having the usual sole 10 and upper 11. The upper 11 is provided at its lower edges with the usual welt 12 stitched thereto and which in turn is stitched to the edges of the sole in the usual way.
Arranged within the shoe on top of the sole 10 and between the secured edges of the upper l1 is a cushion 13 of ground cork or the like, bound together by suitable adhesive, and of a shape to fit the space formed by said secured edges, as shown. Arranged within the shoe on top of the cushion 13 is the usual lining 14 and insole 15.
A heel consisting of a layer 16 of leather and a tread 17 of rubber is secured to the sole 10 by means of nails 18. A horseshoe-shaped clinch plate 19, of steel, is arranged against the upper side of the sole 10 opposite the heel member 17 in position to encounter and turn or clinch the points of the nails 18 when the 1929. serial No. 369,551.
heel is secured in place. As shown, said clinch plate 19 is interposed between the sole 10 and the cushion 13 and is provided with a. perforation 20.
By this arrangement, a secure fastening for the heel portion of the shoe is provided and also, at the same time, a finished cushion effect is provided without danger of the points of the nails or tacks employed in securing the heel in place appearing oil-the inside of the shoe. Owing to the horseshoe shape of the plate 19 and the perforations 20, the cushion material 13 will enter the space between the `sides of said plate and also the openings 20, thereby definitely locating and locking said plate in position.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details disclosed but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a Goodyear welt shoe having an inseamed heel seat, an outer sole, a cushion member extending between the inseam ridges of the heel seat, a U-'shaped metal plate disposed between the inseam ridge and the outsole at the heel seat, a heel, and fastening means for the heel extending through said outer sole and clenched against said plate.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of June, 1929.
ELBERT W. ALLEN.
