Description

Oct. 13, 1931.
J. A. MAKER TEETHING AND EXEHCISING DEVICE Filed July 19, 1928 Patented Oct. 13, 1931 JOHN A. MAKER, OF DULUTK, MINNESOTA.
TEETHING AND EXEBCISING DEVICE Application'flled July 19, 1928. Serial No. 293,822.
This invention relates to teething and massaging devices, particularly adapted for use by infants or small children, the principal object being that of providing a device which will materially assist in the teething process, also massage the gums and exercise the teeth of the child which will assist in the normal development of the childs mouth.
Another object is to provide such a device free from any tendency towards the development of the habit of sucking by the child using same.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the further description thereof.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings, forming part of. this application, and wherein like reference characters indicate like parts: I
Figure 1 is a plan elevation of the improved teething device;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 22, Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is an end elevation.
35 The device is preferably constructed of a unitary piece of soft rubber, being elliptical at one end, as indicated at 1, and of lobular form as at 2 at the other end, and either end of which acts as a handle in the manipulation of the device, it being selective in this respect for gratifying the individual tendencies of the user.
Upon the opposite sides of the device are formed a plurality of spaced tit like pro ections or stipules, indicated at 3, they being of any number and size practice may require,
and preferably formed about the entire opposite surfaces of the device.
In the inner circumferential edge of the outermost side of the elliptical portion 1 are formed a plurality, preferably four, of small corrugations indicated at 4, they being for convenient registration of the childs fingers in grasping same when this portion is being used as a handle.
In the opposite end are formed two spaced through holes indicated at 5 and disposed longitudinally of the portion 2; these holes being expressly for the purpose of admitting air in the event of the child, using the device,
attempting to suck the portion 2, which is of somewhat teat shape.
From the foregoing it is evident that I have devised a simple, practical and novel form of selective teething, exercising and massagmg device, and that the free admission of air through the holes 5 overcome any undesirable results of sucking.
Havmg thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A teething and massaging device comprlsing a y1eldable body portion formed with an elliptical ring at one end and lobular at the opposite end and having an air passageway through the lobular end communicating wlth the elliptical opening for the purpose described.
2 An exercising device of the class described composed of suitable material, ring like at one end having corrugations within sald ring portion for registration with the fingers of the user and lobular at the opposite end having open holes therethrough for the purpose described, and stipules covering the opposite faces ofthe' device.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a resilient body portion having a ring like portion at one end having stipules covering the outer faces thereof and a lobular portion extending from one side thereof and aving stipules covering the outer faces thereof, said lobular portion having a hole extending from the free end thereof longitudinally therethrough and through one side of the ring like portion.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JOHN A. MAKER.
