This invention relates to aqpaper fileor loose-leaf binder of the kind comprising two hingedly-connected file members having arched prongs which are concentric'about the hinge, one of the file members being pivoted to as'upporting plate so as to allow the hinge to be raised from the plate for opening out the prongs. In a. known file of this kind the file members are provided with means for preventing the prongs normally frombeingsep: arated. According tothe present invention means are provided for arresting the pivot-ed file member in different angular positions relative to the supporting base,;the other member being at the same time controlled by abutment against the base so as to determine the extent to'which the prongs are opened out...

In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 to 5, the paper file. comprises two file members 6 and 7, each composed of a wire frame. The frame 6 is secured to an angular plate '3 formed with lugs 24 whereby the frame is pivoted at 2 to a base plate 1 connected to the pivots.

When the hinge 8 is raised from the base plate, as shown in Fig. 2, the prongs, while still in an overlapping position; are
opened out so as to allowthe papers to be turned over from one set of prongs to the other. When the file members'are turned into an upright position, as shown in Fig. 3, the frame 7 is free to be turned into the position shown by dotted lines, the prongs beingthen separated for the removal or insertion of papers. In order to maintain the pivoted file member in either of these positions, a double-armed finger lever 12 is pivoted at 16 to the plate 3 and formed at one end with a nose '10 adapted to co-operate with stops 19 19 and 20 on a bracket 18 connected to the base plate 1. A spring 17 controls the lever and tends to hold the nose in engagement with the stops. The stops 19 and 20 are bevelled ofl so as to allow the nose to slide over them on pressure being applied to the file members, to the papers or to the cover for closing the file. The stop 19 is also bevelled so as to allow an opening movement of the file under pressure. The stop 20, however, is adapted to engage the lever positively so as to prevent the members from being opened out beyond the position. shown in When the file members rest on the Fig. 2 and thus to prevent the prongs from being separated. The separation of the prongs can only be effected by a manipulation of the finger lever 12, the latter being for this purpose provided with finger pieces 21 and 21 projecting to difierent heights above the base of the file so that one of them will be within easy reach of the fingers with the hand resting on a more or less thick pile of papers.
A raised guide plate 22, which is preferably integral withthe base plate 1, is arranged on the back of the file cover so as to engage the frame and guide it into the closed position when the file cover is closed. Another guide plate 23 is connected-to the adjacent side of the cover so as to form a continuation of the plate 22 when the side is turned up. 7
In the arrangement shown in Figs. 6 to 8, the frames 6 and 7 are replaced by angular plates 6 and 7 to which the prongs l and 5 are connected. The opening-out movement of the plate 6 is controlled by stops 11 formed on a bracket carried by a springcontrolled sliding rod 10. The latter is held in a guide 25 on the back of the file cover and can be operated by means of a finger lever 12"pivoted on the bracket 26 forreleasing the plate 6. As shown in Fig. 8, another finger lever 15 may be pivoted to the plate .6 for 'co-oper'ation with stops 14, formed on a bracket on the plate 7 so :as to control the movement of the latter plate about the. hinge 8. The lever 15 is controlled by a spring 27 which tends to hold it clear of the stop 14, and an arm 13011 the lever is arranged so as to be engaged by the stops 11 for turning the lever into engage ment with the stops 14. Thus the rod 10 and the lever 15 will co-operate in arresting the file members, and a depression of the lever 12-will suffice for releasing the file members and allowing them to turn freely in either direction.

The ends of the prongs are pointed, and to ensure their proper entrance intothe apertures of the papers when the latter are turned over from one set of prongs to the other, the points, instead of being central, are displaced, :as shown in Fig. 9, in a radially outward direction, i. e., in the direction in which the papers are pulled. The tubular prongs are bevelled ofif in the same manner as shown in Fig. 12, and the edges are moreover curled oil inwards, as shown in Fig. 11, so as to prevent them from cutting into the papers.
I claim 2-- 1. A paper file of the character described comprising a pair of hingedly connected file members carrying arched prongs which are concentric about the hinge, a base plate to which one of said members is pivoted so as to allow the hinge to be raised from the plate for opening out the prongs, and means for arresting the pivoted member in difierent angular positions relative to the base plate.
2. A structure as claimed in claim .1 wherein the pivoted member in one ofthe positions in which it is arrested, maintains the prongs in a slightly overlapping position and prevents them from being separated.
3. A structure as claimed in claim 1 wherein the arresting means comprise a springcontrolled finger lever mounted on the pivoted file member, and three stops carried by the base plate so as to co-operate with said lever and arrest the member with the prongs in fully closed, partly closed and open position, the stops in the end positions being adapted to release the lever automatically under forcible pressure, the central .stop being adapted to engage the lever positively in the outward direction of movement and require hand-operation of the lever in order to separatethe prongs.

A structure. as claimed in claim 1 wherein the'arresting means comprise a springcontrolled finger leverv mounted on the pivoted file member, andthree stops carried by the base plate so as to co-operate with said lever and arrest the member with the prongs in fully closed, partly closed and open positions, the stops in the end positions being adapted to release the lever automatically under forcible pressure the central stop being adapted to engage the lever positively in the outward'direction and movement and require hand operation of the leverin order to separate the prongs, the lever being provided with two finger pieces extending to different height-s above the base of the file.
5. The structure claimed in claim 1 in combination with a file cover to which the base plate is connected, and raised guide elements on said cover for the non-pivoted file member.
'6. The structure claimed in claim 1 in combination with a file cover to the back of which the base plate is connected, and raised guide members on the back and on the adjacent side of the cover for the non-pivoted file member.
7 A structure as claimed in claim 1 wherein the file members are composed of wire frames, the pivoted member comprising in addition a plate and being formed with looped portions between which and the plate the other frame is hingedly supported.
8. Astructure as claimed in claim 1 wherein the prongs are formed with pointed ends, the points being eccentric.
'9. A str-ucture'as claimed in claim 1 wherein the prongs of one file member are tubular and adapted to telescope on the prongs of the other member, the tubular prongs being threaded on supporting wires and bent together with the latter so as to prongs in position.
10. A structure as claimed in claim 1 wherein the prongs of one file member are tubular and adapted to telescope on the prongs of the other member, the ends of the tubular prongs being bevelled off and formed with in-turned edges.
