Description

Sept. 22, 1931.
L. N. POND APPARATUS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF WIRE GLASS Filed Sept;
I ij/z/ 3mm LetznderMPowd, 3% W (CL Patented Sept. '22, 1931 UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE LEANDEB N. POND, OF KING-SPORT, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOB TQBLUE BIDGE GLASS COB- POKA'I'ION, OF KINGSIORT, TENNESSEE, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK APPARATUS FOR THE BE OF WIPE GLASS Application filed September In a prior application filed by myself and Joseph H. Lewls on the 31st day of July, 1929, there .is described a machine forthe manufacture of wire glass in which the wire netting is fed into the glass in advance of the forming pass and moves through such pass .with the glass and is there incorporated in theresultant sheet. The feed of the netting into the glass is accomplished by passing it between and in contact with the upper formof which is but slightly above the hot glass. It has been found in practice that there is a tendency of the feeding roll to warp and to thus become concave on what at any time may be its lower side. Due to the fact that the netting feed roll is located below the horizontal, plane of; the center of the feed roll, this results in increasing the distancebetween the middle portions of the two rolls, so that the feed of the nettingdue to the feed roll is greater at the. mar in than at its middle. I
have found that t is can be avoided if the feel roll is bellied or enlar ed at its center, as will be hereinafter descri ed and claimed. 7
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding parts are designated by corresponding marks of reference,-
Figure 1' is a vertical longitudinal section thriough a device embodying my invention; an t Figure2 shows the netting feed rolls, the swelling of the middle portion thereof being exaggerated for purposes of illustration.
The machine represented in thedrawing is that shown in the Lewis and Pond application with the improvement here sought to be protected. V
A is the front wall of the furnace, having a feed opening B therein at the metal line, so that glass issues over the sill C to a form ing pass D .loca'ted between the upper and lower feed rolls E and F, respectively, and is there formed into a sheet which passes over I l u the carrier roll K and between the polishing ing roller and a netting feed roller, the latter e, 1930. Serial No. 480,253.
rolls L and M. H is the. netting feed roll and between it and the upper forming roll E the netting I is fed into the glass in advance of the forming pass. As described in the Lewis and Pond application, the position of the netting in the sheet is determined by the rate of feed of the netting as effected by the desirable to have the roll H close to the glass. This results in the axis of the roll H being in a lower horizontal plane than the axis of the roll E. Under these conditions, any warping of the roll H due to the heat from the glass causes it to bend downwardly incauses the distance between the axis of the roll at the central portion and the adjacent surface of the forming roll to increase, thus giving room for the increased diameter of the finishing roll without causing the V rolls to separate at their ends. Hence, constancy of spacing between the adjacent surfaces of the finishing roll and the forming roll is maintalned, with consequent uniformity in ,the
- feed of the netting from side to side. The
swellon the net-ting feed roll for this purpose need only' be very small. For instance,
rolls E and H, and, as stated therein, it is in a roll used by. me which having a glass working length of 48 inches, the radius at the center is .07 of an inch greater than the radiusat the ends, which is 2.25 inches.
Having thus described my invention, what 2 nausea for feeding glass to the forming pass,- a netting feed roll adjacent to the upper forming roll, the two having a, space therebetween for the passage of netting, the axis of the Hat- 5 ting. feed roll being in a, horizontal plane below that of the upper forming rollha nd the netting feed roll having its center swelled in respect to its ends.
' In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my 10 signature LEANDER N. POND.
