This invention consists of a methodfor the manufacture of relatively thin wide shapes from bar stock, and of a typical machine for carrying outthat method.
One object of the invention is the provision of a method whereby disk-like shapes in a saving of handling, space, time and cost.
The invention also provides a preferred embodiment of the machine for carrying out this process.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent upon reference to the accompanying description and the appended drawings, in which:
Figs. 1 and 2 are diagrammatic sectional representations of the diesand feeding mechanism, showing, respectively, the first and second steps of the present method.
Fig. 3 is a similar diagrammatic view to a larger scale, showing the conclusion of the process and the resulting product.
The method is carried out by means of a mill of the Slick type, and as shown in Patent Number 915,232 dated March 16, 1909,
for example.
Referring to the drawings the machine comprises a frame 1 (shown fi'agmentarily) in which a die 4., of suitable formation is fixed. This portion also bears feeding apparatus represented by rolls 7 suitably journaled to engage a bar of stock -6 and feed it through the central aperture in the die 4 provided for that purpose. The dies are water cooled by circulating water through the hollows 8. Other parts may be cooled if necessary.
Opposed to the die 4 is a complementary die 3, which is journaledin a suitable bearmg 2. The said bearing 2 is adapted to be rotated about the axis m'w of the die 4,
thus causing successive radii of the die 3 to approach and recede from similar radii ofthe die 4, in a manner characteristic of the disclosure of the above mentioned Slick patent.
A member 5 extends centrally through the die 3 and is provided With an obtuse conical end, as shown. 4
Means, (not shown) such as a hydraulic ram, screws or toggle levers, a're provided-to cause forcible engagement of dies 3 and 4 upon the work, and of member 5 with the bar of stock 6. Hydraulic pressure means such as shown in Slicks Patent 915,232 are suitable and well known in the art, and are therefore not shown in the drawings. other source of power is provided to rotate the bearing 2.
The cycle of operation of the machine is instituted by the projection of the bar of stock 6 through the die 4 by means of proper actuation of the, feed rolls 7. The bar has been previously heated to a proper working temperature. At this time the dies are separated and the member 5 is withdrawn to an extent which determines the amount of stock projected beyond the face of the die .mitted to be forced back by the member 5.
The entry of member 5 into the aperture of the die 4 cuts off the ring 9 from the bar and assures its retention on the face of the die.
Following the above steps, the pressure apparatus governing the relative position of the dies is set in operation, causing them to approach each other. Continued operation of the machine rolls the rough ring 9 on a radius thereof under heavy pressure from the pressure apparatus. A' thinning and spreading of the ring results, until at last the final form 10 is reached. Thereupon the several elements are retracted, the finished product removed and a new cycle started. The machine illustrated is designed to form a tapered disk of steel, of a form suitable for use in making an automobile wheel.
With appropriate power, the machine may perform some classes of work from cold bar 5 stock.
The invention is not to be limited by the disclosure of the foregoing specification and drawings, but only by the scope of the appended claims. What I claim is:
1. The method of manufacture of disklike shapes between opposed dies, which consists in the formation of a blankrtherebe tween from bar stock, by a process of extrusionand upsetting and thereafter rolling said blank to a finished shape determined by the meeting faces of said dies.
2. The method of making disklike products which consists of measuring, shaping and cutting ofi? a blank from a bar of stock between opposed dies and consequently shaping said blank by rolling between said dies under pressure along a radial line.
6 3. Apparatus of the character described comprising opposed dies, relatively movable into and out of operative position by means capable of exerting great pressures, a combined measuring, forming and cutting-off -member carried within one of said dies, a
feed channel through the other of said dies, and feed means which operate on a bar of stock to advance its end between the dies and hold it in that position during the operation of the measuring, forming and cutting-oil member.
4. Apparatus of the character described, comprising means for severing and forming a rough blank from bar stock and opposed rolling die surfaces concentric with the said 40 means for further operating on the blank.
5. A machine comprising opposed rolling die surfaces having their axes arranged at an obtuse angle, each surface having concentric with it an element of a device for forming from bar stock a blank to be rolled thereby.
6. A machine comprising opposed rolling die surfaces adapted to be relatively moved, 1 a plunger die concentric with one ,of said first-mentioned die surfaces, and reciprocable I axially,and relative thereto, and feed mechanism for advancing a-bar of material concentrically through the other die surfaces. 7. The method of manufacturing articles 55 from bar stock which comprises measurin a portion of said bar by means of opposed 1 forming dies, upsetting and laterally extruding said portion of stock into .a hollow ring- I shaped form,-cutting. ofi said ring from said 30 bar,and thereafter rolling said ring, under ressure applied on asubstantially radial 'ne, between and by means of said dies.
