Description

1 D. MANNING CUTTER-BAR COUPLING FOR MOWING-MACHINES.
No.181,192. Patented Aug.15, 1876.

NVFEI'ERS, PHOTD-LITHOGRAPHEL WASHINGTON. D. C.
STATES ,A'IENT QF IoE.
DELAVAN MANNING, OF MIDDLETOWN, NEW YORK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 18 [,192, dated August 15, 1876; application filed 7 August 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DELAVAN MANNING, of Middletown, in the county of Orange and the State of New York, have invented certain mm and z z of Fig. 1.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of myinvention is to furnish a simple and efficient means for connecting a pitman to or with a cutter-bar, and enabling all lost motion occasioned by wearof the parts to be compensated for; to which end it consists in the peculiar construction andcombination of parts, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a podestal formed upon or attached to a cutter-bar, B, and provided with a cap, 0, that is held in place by means of two screws, D and D, one of which passes vertically through each end of said cap, and has its lower threaded end contained within a correspondingly-threaded opening, that is provided in the contiguous portion of said pedestal. Within the pedestal A are fitted two half-boxes, E and E, which are provided at their sides with the usual flanges e and e that bear upon the sides ofsaid pedestal and its cap 0, and insure the lateral position of parts. Said boxes closely fill the space vertically, so that when said cap is screwed downward to place it shall bear upon and confine the former, while lengthwise of said pedestal said boxes have less dimensions than the space within said pedestal, and inv such direction are confined in position by means ofa stscrew, '13, which passes inward through one of the jaws of the latter, and bears against the side edge of one of said boxes. A jamb-nut, f, placed upon said setscrew, outside of said. pedestal, enables the former to be locked in place when adjusted thereto.
At the radial center of the boxes E and E is provided a round opening, 6, one half of which is in each box, and within said opening is fitted'a correspondingly-shaped sleeve, G, which just fills the same from end to end, and at its axial center is provided with a square longitudinal opening, g. The end of the pitman H is provided with an arm, h, which is turned horizontally to a position having a right angle to the line of said pitman, and corresponds to and closely fills the opening 9 of the sleeve Gr, when it is secured in place by means of a screw, I, that passes into its end.
The operation of the device is as follows: The sleeve Gr operates as a bushing for the arm or pin h of the connecting-rod, and receives all wear that would otherwise be thrown upon the latter, and can at any time, and with but little expense and trouble, he removed and replaced by a new bushing. All wear of either bushing or boxes can be compensated for by screwing inward the set-screw, so that all annoyance and injury from lost motion will be avoided, and the durability of parts largely increased.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s The pedestal A, cap 0, boxes E and E, screws D, F, and I, sleeve Gr, having the central opening g, and pitman H, provided with the pin. or arm h, said parts being constructed and combined with each other, and with the cutter-bar of a harvester or mower, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of August, 1875.
. EELAVAN MANNING. Witnesses:
FRANK BLOGKLEY, T. B. Mosnna.
