Description
J1me 23, 1931. J HOQPER 1,811,393 NECKTIE Filed Sept. 25, 1929 Wmmmm EZ ga a. w gwuwnloc Edward cl Hun E1" Patented June 23, 1931 UNITED STATES EDWARD J. HOOPER, F NUTLEY, NEW JERSEY NEGKTIE Application filed September 23, 1929.
My invention relates to neckties of the class in which an artificial knot is used, to simulate the knot of a four-in-hand tie, with one breast strip of fabric permanently attached to the knot and another strip of fabric to encircle the neck of the wearer and then be passed through the artificial knot and depend alongside the first named strip.
My invention comprises novel means for passing the neck strip through the artificial knot and fastening it detachably therein and novel means for forming the knot and attaching the breast and neck strips thereto.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I shall first describe in detail the mode in which I at present prefer to carry the invention into practice.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application for patent, in which like parts are designated by the same numbers in all the figures.
Figure l is a face view of a necktie embodying my invention, parts being broken away to show the construction.
' Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view on the line 22, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a rear sectional view of the same.
In the drawings, 4 designates the tubular body of the artificial knot, which is made of fibre or other suitable stiff material and preferably somewhat oval in cross-section, as shown in Figure 2.
The knot body 4 is formed with a vertical slit 5 at the rear and is covered with the fabric of the tie preferably by forming the covering piece 6 with pockets 7 at each end to receive the respective separate ends of the body 4, around which the piece 6 is wrapped and preferably sewed in place.
Between the lower end of the body 4 and its covering piece 6 is fastened, preferably by stitching, the fabric breast strip 8, and between the upper end of the body 4 and its covering piece 6 is fastened preferably by stitching the end of the neck strip 9, the free end of which is designed to be passed around the collar and then slipped laterally through the knot-slit 5, and drawn taut through the knot.
Serial No. 394,713.
In the knot body 4 is suitably fixed the head of a fastening pin 10, the point of which projects rearwardly and downwardly part way across the interior of the knot body.
4, so as to engage releasably the neck strip 9, passed and drawn taut therethrough.
To accommodate the vertical fold 11 I form in the fabric breast strip 8, I prefer to make a notch 12 in the lower end of the knot body 4 at the front. 00
By this method of making the knot and attaching the fabric strips thereto, I form a (whole knot, both body and fabric coverin with a rear vertical slit or opening throug which the neck strip can be passed laterally 5 with much greater convenience than by the ordinary method of threading the neck strip lengthwise through the covered knot. The manufacture of the tie is also greatly simplified and facilitated with a corresponding reduction in cost.
It is evident that many changes may be made in the details of my invention without departing from the boundaries thereof, as defined by the following claim.
I claim as my invention:
In a necktie, the combination with a tubular body having a completely open vertical slit at the rear, and a V-notch in its lower edge at the front, of a fabric breast piece applied to the interior of the tubular body, and puckered to project through the V-notch in a fold, and a fabric covering secured about said body and a neck piece also secured to the tubular body at one end so that its free end may be drawn laterally through the open vertical slit, and means for securing the lgrep end of the neck piece within the tubular oc y.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
EDWARD J. HOOPER.
