LOCKING KEY FOR cLosURE PLUGS original Filed Feb. .1.7. 1927 zz i? if /f 'l /fz 1f 9 Patented June 16, 1931 PATENT OFFICE ARTHUR R. SODERQUIST, F IDAHO FALLS, IDAHO LOCKING KEY FOR CLOSURE PLUGS Original application led February 17, 1927, Serial No. 169,019. Patent No. 1,712,361, dated May 7, 1929. Divided and this application ed January 24, 1929. Serial No. 334,756.
The invention relates to a key for inserting and removing closure plugs of h-ot water bottles, and the like, this application being a division of application for lock closures for ice bags, filed Feb. 17th, 1927, Serial No. 169,019, and patented on May 7 1929, Patent No. 1,712,861, and the object of the invention is the provision of a locking keyv for het water bags, ice bags, and the like that is adapted to insert and remove plugs in filling openings of articles of the character stated provided with flanges surrounding the edges of the plug to prevent tampering with y the plug by unauthorized persons as stated in the application referred to.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a key for the purpose stated that is reasonable in cost of manufacture and effective in operation. f
The invention will be described in detail hereinafter, and will be found illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a transverse sectional View of a fragment of an ic-e or het water bag and its filling opening showing the key in position and engaging the plug,
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the key, and
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view thereof. Y
In the drawings similar reference characters are used to designate lcorresponding parts throughout-the several views.
An ice or hot water bag l is provided with a neck 2 and secured in the neck 2 is a sleeve 3 and screw threaded as shown. Sleeve 3 is provided with an annular iiange l extending radially of the neck portion 2 and an axial flange 5'. The flange 4 is spaced from the sleeve 3 to provide a groove 6 to receive the upper edge of the neck 2. 7 indicates the closure plug that is threaded into the sleeve 3 and provided with a radial flange 8 that overlies the flange 4, said plug when in position being surrounded by the flange 5 to prevent gripping the plug for removal. 9 is a gasket that is mounted in an annular groove 10 in the under side of the flange 8, and 11 designates recesses in the upper face of the plug 7 to receive lugs or projections on the locking key 12, said locking key being preferablyvmade of sheet metal and having its (side edges turned down as shown at 13 'to form a grip for turning the locking key, thesurface of said flange 13 may be milled or otherwise roughened for providing a better grip, this being common practice. 14 `indicates lugs or projections adapted to engage in the recesses 11 and formed by pressing the metal of the key 12. y
In use it will be apparent that the plug 7 may be turned into the neck 2 having threaded connection with the sleeve V3 as shown and when seated b-y the Vkey member 12 the key will be removed and it will then be impossible to remove the plug without a similar key member and danger of removal of the plug by an unauthorized person, such,
for instance as a bed-ridden patient, and consequent flooding of the bed, may be avoided, also preventing patient from stealing ice from the ice bag which may cause his death when not allowed to have either ice or water. v
What is claimed is A locking key for closure plugs comprising an annular one-piece sheet metal body, said body being circular and having a marginal flange depending from the top thereof, I Y
