Description
June 16, 1931. H. KRUGER 1,810,567
FOLDING UMBRELLA Filed Sept. 27, 1927 Smau/woz Ha O ffl ef- Patented June 16, 1931 HUGO KRGER, or HoBonEN, New JERSEY FOLDING UMBQLL' l i .y i y i Appiieation sied september 27, 1927. serial n10. 222,312.
This invention relates to'improvements in umbrellas, parasols or the like, and it is the principal object of my invention to provide an umbrella allowing the folding thereof into a very small compass.
Another 'obj ect of my invention is the provision of a foldable and collapsible umbrellal allowing a telescoping ,of its ribs, and stick, and a folding of its spreaders against the telescoped ribs, so that the umbrella may be conveniently carried in a pocket.
A further obj ect of my invention is the provision of a folding umbrella of extremely simple and thereforeinexpensive construction, yet durable and eiiicient in operation, and equipped with suitable looking means for effectively locking the parts in their relative adjusted position in the extended as well as in the folded position of the umbrella.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a foldable or collapsible umbrella allowing a neatly folding of its cover material against and between the stick and ribs when the entire umbrella is folded into its smallest compass.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds, and will then be more specifically defined in the appended claim.
l In the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosue:-
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of an umbrella constructed 'according to my Iinvention, extended.
Figure. 2 is a view showing the bayonet lock.
Figure 3 is a similar view with the umbrella collapsed and folded.
As illustrated, the shaft or stick 10 of the umbrella carries at lits lower end a handle 11 and` is hollow for the reception of the upper rod 12 which carries at a certain distance from its upper end a crown -or collar 13 to which the inner ends of hollow ribs 14 arev secured in the well known customary manner to allow a folding of the same against the rod.
These ribs 14 have the form of hollow cylinders equipped with longitudinal slots allowing'the passageof the'eyes 16 and their'y disi placementtherein.- Into thecylindric'al ribs 14 extend the inner ends of ribs 17 to which the eyes 16' are attached andwhich aretelescopically displaceable'within the ribsv 14. -To the 'eyes 16 are attached in the usual well known manner, theouter ends of the stretcher or spreader rods 18, the'inner ends ofwhich are 'attached to a sleeve 19 slidably arranged on'rod 12' and slotted in its side face toxalloiw in the customaryl well known" manner the passage of a spring-controlled dog 20. A similar dogy 22 locks the sleeve in its lowermost position.
The rod 12 is telescopically displaceable into the stick, and a collar 21 near its extreme outer end limits its inward movement.
The handle 11 is attachedfto the stick 10 by means of a bayonet lock 22 adapted tobe engaged by dog 22, so that stick and rod'may be held in place ywhen the umbrella is opened, as indicated in Figure 1.
A spring-controlled dog 23 is provided near the inner face of the umbrellav roof for the purpose of 'engaging and passing through the slot 22 of the bayonet lock when the shaft and rod are telescoped to prevent a separation of the parts in the telescoped position as shown in Fig.\3.
vThe operation of my device will be entirely clear fromthe above description.
, If it is desired to fold theumbrella, the dog 20 is pressed inwardly in the usual, well known-manner, and the sleeve 19 is moved downwards along rod 12 and stick 10. This movement by means of the spreaders 18 draws the cylindrical rods` 14 down and by the displacement of the eyes 16 which are secured the ribs 17 draw the same into the rods When then lthe handle 11 `and stick 10 areV given a turn in order to allow a relative movement of rod 12 and stick 10 to release the bayonet lock, the rod 12can be telescoped into the stick, and its point is prevented from entering into the folded umbrella kby its collar 21. Thus, the umbrella15 is capable of folding intoya very small compass of about 12 inches and may be conveniently carriedV in the pocket. The parts in their folded position are securely held against separation by the engagement of dog 23 in thebayonet slot 22 near the upper end of stick l0.
While I have described the preferred form of my device as an example, it is to be understood that I may make such changes in the specific arrangement and inthe construction of the minor details of my invention as come within the scope of the appended claim without departure from the spirit of my invention and the principle involved.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Y In a folding and collapsible umbrella, a hollow stick, a rod adapted to telescope into said stick, said stick having a bayonet slot formed near its upper end, and a spring controlled dogon said rod ad aptedto pass through the bayonet slot when the umbrella is folded and collapsed to prevent separation of the parts and another dog on said rod to engage said bayonet slot when the umbrella is opened to limit the outward movement of said rod.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 23rd day of September, A. D vl927.
