Description
H. CARTER.
HAND-RUBBER.
Patented Feb. 27,'1877.
jzenfor:
FFIOE,
HENRY CARTER, OF A YLMER, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONF- HALF HIS RIGHT TO DANIEL STEWART, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND-RUBBERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. lS7,S1E, dated February 27, 1877; application filed January 3, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY CARTER, of Aylmer, in the county of Elgin, in the Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Glothes-Scourers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same. 7
This invention relates to that class of clothesscourers which consist, essentially, of a block having projecting elastic strips, and are em ployed as a substitute for the hands in washing clothes on a wash-boardyand it consists in the construction of the device composed of a block of wood, having on its rubbingface transversely-projecting strips of rubber or other flexible material, or hair or whalebone brush, and two handles attached to its upper face, by which handles itis manipulated upon the clothes lying on an ordinary Wash-board or other corrugated surface; also, in the provision to the rear edge of the block of a cleat,
for securing the fabric thereto during the rub bing or scouring action.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved clothes-scourer. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. i
A is a block of wood or other suitable material, to which are aftixed,in grooves or otherwise, transverse strips B, of india-rubber or other flexible material; or, in lieuofsuch strips, the block may be punctured, and rows of bristles or Whalebone brush inserted, after the manner of brush-making. O are two upright handles, preferably of the D pattern, secured by their base to the top of the block A neare'ach end. The base of the handles extends from the front to the rear edge of the block, and
prevent it warpingor twisting. These handlesare to be seized by the operator in the manipulation of the device when scouring or rubbing on the clothes lying on an ordinary washboard in the process of cleansing.
The ordinary wash-board is placed inclinedly in the washing-tub, in the usual manner, and the clothes to be cleansed are placed over the board, and my rubbing device then moved over the clothes, thus superseding the ordinary manner of rubbing the clothes on an ordinary washboard, or other corrugated surface, by hand contact therewith.
E is a cleat or button secured. to the rear edge of the board A, for securing the fabric while being scoured or washed.
In the drawings, the transverse strips B are shown as being placed in an inclined direction, one-half the strips inclining forwardly, and a moiety rearwardly but they may, if desired, be placed perpei'idicularly.
I am aware that clothes-scourers have before been made with strips of flexible material projecting from a block or back, and this, therefore, I do not broadly claim.
I claim as my invention- As an improved article of manufacture, a clothes-scouringdevice consisting of the board A, having rubber or other flexible strips B, or rows of brush, as described, and two vertical handles, 0, on its upper face for its manipulation, and cleat E on its rear edge for securing the clothes, as set forth.
HENRY CARTER. Witnesses:
LYNDES MGOURDY, JNo. CRAWFORD.
