IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING B ED-BOTTOS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,816, dated February 27, 1877; application filed December 11, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J OHN F. 00mm, of T01 ledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Bed-Bottom, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a crosssection on line y 3 Fig. 1, of the bed-bottom. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line a m in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists of a spring bed-bottom made in two sections, oneof which is made of thicker strips than the other. It also consists in cross bars for supporting the slats that are covered with chamois-skin, or other material, to prevent noise, and rest in notches in side piece of the bedstead.
Referring to the drawing, A A, &c., are strips of elastic wood, which may vary in width and thickness according to the requirements of the case. B B are cross-bars attached transversely to the slats A, a small distance apart and near the head ends of the slats. The bottom is made in two sections, 0 D, for convenience in handling, and also to admit of providing one side of the bed with stiffer springs than the other, so that the bed may accommodate persons of unequal weight. E E are cross-bars upon which the bottom rests, which are covered with chamois-skin, or other suitable material, and fitted to notches in the side pieces of the bedstead. The cross-bars E, at the head of the bed, rest in wide notches in the side rails of the bedstead, and are capable of being moved within the limit of the notches. The bar E is located between the bars B B, so that the downward pressure of the body upon the center of the slats tends to elevate the head, and the slats being free to move independently at the foot of the bed, permits them to yield more than the slats of ordinary bottoms.
The advantages claimed for my improved bed-bottom, are its simplicity and cheapuess, its cleanliness and efficiency.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I 1. A bedbottom composed of strips of wood attached together, substantially as described, and made in two sections, the strips of one section being more rigid than the strips of the other section, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination of the bottom composed of strips A and cross-barsB B, and the covered cross-bars E E, substantially as shown and described.
JOHN F. OODER.
