This invention relates to machinery whereby cardboard or other like cartons can be folded from blanks and have applied to them a lining, for instance a paper or sheet cellulose material liningadapted to be folded in with the flaps of the carton and pasted'or glued to produce a sealed carton.
The object of the present invention is to provide a machine which will mechanically adhere the lining to the cardboard or like blanks, the adhesion being effected along the required lines appropriate to the folds of the carton blanks.

In Fig. -6 each end of the cardboard blank A is formed with two symmetrical square flaps B adapted to close the ends of the carton, the lining 0 being formed with substantially half hexagonal. recesses C and being shorter than the maximum length of the carton blank from top to bottom. In Fig. 7 this latter dimension of the cardboard blank and lining are equal.
In Fig. 1 is shown diagrammatically how a stack of cardboard blanks A stacked on an inclined platform 1, and a roll 2 of paper or other suitable sheet material adapted to supply the lining blanks are fed from difl'erent ends of a machine having pasting and shaping devices toa common rotary cylinder 3 where the cardboard blanks and linings are superimposed in proper registration for being pressed together on predetermined lines and fed ready for folding into boxes on to a re ceiving platform 4, the stack of finished lined blanks being indicated by the reference numeral A".
The cylinder 3 has intermittent rotary motion imparted to it, and it serves as a means of picking up each cut off length of lining and conveying it through a semi-circular path from a lining cutting device 5 to which the desired length of lining is fed by a pair of rollers 6 and 7 between which the paper is gripped and drawn, over an idle roller 8. The
rollers 6 and 7 grip the paper'and they rotate to feed the paper between them towards the cylinder 3. The severed length of paper to constitute the lining is held close against the cylinder 3 by suction, the interior of the cylinder being connected to a source of suction and multitudinous holes being formed in the periphery of the cylinder.
Simultaneously with the feeding of the predetermined length of lining on to the cylinder 3 a cardboard or other suitable blank is fed on to guiding rails 9 from thestack A and conveyed over a pasting roller 10 so that it becomes pasted to a predetermined outline by appropriately shaping the periphery of the pasting roller 10 and is then delivered on to the cvlinder'3 so that its leading edge meets the leading edge of the lining being conveyed with the cylinder 3, a roller 11 lightly contacting with the periphery of the said cylinder initially pressing the cardboard blank and lining and guiding them between a pair of pressing rollers 12 and 13 on to the receiving' platform 4.
In order to ensure correct registration of each lining blank with the cutters 5 at the proper movement, adjustment can be effected by applying a pull to thepaper or slackening it at a point in advance of the feedrollers 6 and 7. This can be efiected, by passing the -paper over a pair of idle rollers Mandl la which are located so as to put a loop in the paper, the position of the roller 14 being adjustable by hand. The paper is drawn from the supply roll by a pair of drawing rollers 15 and 16 and is thereafter drawn by the rollers 6 and 7 over a pair of idle rollers 17 and 18 located relative to each other so as to put a small loop in the paper enabling the paper to be drawn taut by reason of the friction of the rollers 17 and 18 opposing the movement of the paper over the roller 14a. Between the rollers 14a and 17 is located a punch or die 19 over the. bed of which the paper is drawn, and between the drawing movement of the rollers 6 and 7 the paper is cut by the punch 19 forming openings of the required outline, the cutters 5 finally severing the paper along the middle of these openings cutting the paper lining to the correct outline and length. The device for pushing the carton blanks along the guides 9 is diagrammatically indicated by the reference numeral 21.
Referring now to Fig. 2 this shows the arrangement of the parts of the machine relevant to the present invention, and I shall only refer to the important parts as it is obvious that most of the mechanical movements shown have a number of alternative equivalent forms. The cylinder 3 is formed with lated. The edge of the lowermost cardboard blank A is drawn down by a suction device and grippers on the conveyor device grip the blank so that movement of the conveyor will withdraw the lowermost cardboard blank from the stack. The cardboard blank is moved along the guide 9 by the conveying device as previously referred to and it is delivered on to the cylinder 3 so that its leading edge meets the leading edge of the lining carried round the cylinder. The conveyor consists of a carriage with rack, getting recip rocating movement from the quadrant 22 by means of the wheel 24 over the wheel 26. The cylinder 3 is moved direct by the quadrant 22, and by the wheel 26 the movement unisonously with the working stroke is transferred to the pasting cylinder 10. When the carriage after having guided the cardboard blank to the cylinder returns in order to collect a new blank, provisions have been made to the effect that the cylinders 3 and roller 10 are standing still and consequently also the conveying organs at 6 and 7 mentioned below. The cardboard blank can be pressed downwards against the cylinder 3 by the roller 11 which is "supported in a slotted arm 11a.
The feeding rollers 6 and 7 can be adjusted longitudinally to suit different lengths of lining and the method of adjustment can com prise a hand wheel 27 formed with'a worm 28 meshing with a worm wheel 29 on a feed screw adapted to adjust lengthwise a bracket 32 carrying a splined shaft 31 from which the rollers 6 and 7 are driven by a bevel wheel 33 adjusted and a suitable fine adjustment can be effected readily by a handle 36 adapted to rotate a worm spindle 36a meshing with a segmental worm wheel 36b mounted on a spindle 37 to which is fixed radially an arm 38 carrying at its free end the roller 14. The
segmental worm wheel 36b is formed with a diametrically opposite integral segmental part 360 slotted arcuately to receive a bolt 39 for holding it, in selected position.
The device 19 for shaping the lining blanks can be operated from links and levers indicated at 40 which are connected by a rod 41 to a suitable part of the machine synchronized with the rotation of the cylinder 3'.
Referring to Fi'gs. 3, 4 and 5 the cylinder 3 is formed with a number of parallel or other-' wise suitably disposed circumferential grooves or channels 42. Rows of narrowly spaced holes 43 are arranged communicating with suction passages within the cylinder and each hole is provided with a plug so that selected holes may be left open following a line corresponding approximately to the outline of the edge of the lining. This cylinder is divided into two diametrically opposite symmetrical hollow part annular section chambers 44 to which suction is applied successively to effect the desired suction for each such hollow suction part of the cylinder to pick up a lining blank fed from the rollers 6 and 7 and to carry it round to meet the cardboard blank. Suction is applied from a 7 suitable source through a pair of radial conduits 45 communicating successively with a suction port in a stationary annular section body 46 mounted about the shaft 47 carrying the cylinder 3. A conduit 46a connects the interior of the body 46 to a suction passage 48 surrounding the shaft 47 and integral with the body 46, the connection to the source of suction being indicated at 49. Suitable packing for sealing the bearing faces of the cylinder 3 and the body 46is indicated at 50.
The cutters 5 for severing the lining blanks can be operated from a bell crank lever such as for instance 51 fulcrumed at 52 in a block 53 and connected by a link and lever 54 and 55 respectively to a rod 56 pivoted to one end of alever 57 oscillated from a driving wheel 24. 'A spring loaded depending arm 63 of a bell crank lever 64 is moved at the appropriate moments to operate means for feeding each blank along the guide 9, this lever 64 and another lever 65 for operat ing a suction device for drawing down each carton blank being operated from vertical reciprocating rods 64a and 65a respectively connected respectively to the free ends of oscillating pivoted arms 64b and 656. 'Between the rollers 6 and 7 and the cylinder 3, the conveyed end of a blank is carried by tapes, which are placed in an adequate manner andmoved in unison with the movement of the cylinder 3 and are stationary during part of the stroke. i
By means of my invention a reliable method is provided for picking up lining blanks and conveying them on to the cardboard blanks, and the provision of the multitudinous s'ilction holes 43 enables suction to be applied to the lining sheets on the lines corresponding to the shape of the edge of the said lining sheets.
I claim 1. In apparatus for producing lined cartons, a moving surface and means for feeding a carton'blank simultaneously with a sheet of lining material on to said moving surface, means with said moving surface adapted to apply suction to the lining, the said surface by its movement delivering the registering sheet and carton therefrom, means for applying an adhesive to one of the said two carton members on predetermined lines before they are brought into registration and means for pressing them together.
2. In apparatus for producing lined cartons, a moving surface and means for feeding a carton blank simultaneously with a sheet of lining material on to said moving surface, means with said moving surface adapted to apply suction to the lining, the said surface by its movement delivering the registering sheet and carton therefrom, means for applying an adhesive to one of the said two carton members on predetermined lines before theyare brought into registration and means for pressing them together, a device for feeding of suction. apertures provided in the cylinder wall communicating with said suction chamber. means for feeding carton blanks and lining sheets on to the periphery of said cylinder, means for applying adhesive on predetermined lines to one of the said cartmr elements, means whereby suction in said chamber shall be applied at predetermined points to said carton elements, and means for delivering the blanks and linings from the cylinder.
4. In apparatus for producing lined cartons, a moving surface and means for feeding a carton blank simultaneously with a sheet of lining material on to said moving surface, means with said moving surface adapted to apply suction to the lining, the said surface by its movement delivering the registering sheet and carton therefrom, means for applying an adhesive to one of the said carton members on predetermined lines before they are brought into registration and means for pressing them together, a large number of suction apertures in said surface,
and means for selectively closing said apertures whereby suction is applied to the lining on predetermined lines.
5. In apparatus for producing lined cartons, a moving surface and means for feeding a carton blank simultaneously with a sheet of lining material on to said moving surface, means with. said moving surface adapted to apply suction to the lining, the said surface by its movement delivering the registering sheet and carton therefrom, means for applying an adhesive to one'of the said two carton members on predetermined lines before they are brought into registration and means for pressing them together, a device for feeding lining blanks on to said moving surface, said moving surface being brought successively opposite the said device for feeding lining blanks so as to pick up the said lining blanks by suct on and to carry the said blanks to a delivery point for receiving the carton blanks, a large number of suction apertures in said surface, and means for selectively closing said apertures whereby suction is applied to the lining on predetermined lines.
6. Apparatus for producing lined cartons comprising a rotating cylinder, a suction chamber in the cylinder connected to a source of suction, apertures provided in the cylinder wall communicating with said suction chamber, means for feeding carton blanks and lining sheets on to the periphery of said cylinder, means for applying adhesiveon predetermined lines to one of the said carton elements, means whereby suction insaid chamber shall be applied at predetermined points to said carton elements, and means for delivering the blanks and linings from the cylinder, a large number of said aper tures being distributed over the surface of the cylinder, and means forselectively closing said apertures whereby suction is applied through the cylinder on predetermined mes.
7. Apparatus for producing lined cartons comprising a rotating cylinder, a suction chamber in the cylinder connected to a source of suction, apertures provided in the cylinder wall communicating with said suction chamber, means for feeding carton blanks and lining sheets on to the periphery of said cylinder, means for applying adhesive on predetermined lines to one of the said carton elements, means whereby suction in said chamber shall be applied at predetermined points to said carton elements, and means for delivering the blanks and linings from the cylinder, two longitudinal segmental parts with said cylinder, each said part being formed with its own suction chamber and ports connecting said suction chambers successively to the source of suction.
8. Apparatus for producing lined cartons comprising a rotating cylin .nr. a suction chamber in the cylinder connected to a source of suction, apertures provided in the cylinder wall communicating with said suction chamber, means for feeding carton blanks and lining sheets on to the periphery of said cylinder, means for applying adhesive on predetermined lines to one of the said carton elements, means whereby suction in said chamber shall be applied at predetermined points to said carton elements, and means for delivering the blanks and linings from the cylinder, two longitudinal segmental parts with said cylinder, each said part being formed with its own suction chamber and ports connecting said suction chambers successively to the source ofsuction, a large number ofsaid apertures being distributed over the surface of the cylinder and means for selectively closing said apertures whereby suction is applied through the cylinder on predetermined lines.
9. In apparatus for prodiming lined cartons, a movingsurface and means for feeding a carton blank simultaneously with a sheet of lining material on to said moving surface,
means with said moving surface adapted to apply suction to the lining, the said surface by its movement delivering the registering sheet and carton therefrom, means for applying an adhesive to one of the said two carton members on predetermined lines before they are brought into registration and means for pressing them together, a device for feeding lining blanks on to saidmoving surface, said moving surface being brought successively.
opposite the said device for feeding lining blanks so as'to pick up the said lining blanks by suction and to carry the said blanks to a delivery point for receiving the carton blanks, a large number of suction apertures in said surface, and means for .selectively closing said apertures whereby suction is applied to the lining on predetermined lines, a pasting roller over which the carton blanks are fed to said moving surface, the said pasting roller being shaped to apply paste to the carton blanks on the lines on which the lining blanks are adapted to be adhered to the carton blanks.
10. Apparatus for producing lined cartons comprising a rotating cylin er, a suction chamber in the cylinder connected to a source of suction, apertures provided in the cylinder wall communicating with said suction chamber, means for feeding carton blanks and'lining sheets on to the periphery of said cylinder, means for applying adhesive on predetermined lines to one of the said carton elements, means whereby suction in said chamber shall be applied at predetermined points to said carton elements, and means for delivering the blanks and linings from the cylinder, and means for varying the length of lining blank sheet material to be fed on to said cylinder at each 0 ration.
11. pparatus for producing lined cartons comprising a rotating cylinder, a suction chamber in the cylinder connected toa source of suction, apertures provided in the cylinder wall communicating with said suction chamber, means for feeding carton blanks and lining sheets on to the periphery ofsaid cylinder, means for applyin adhesive on predetermined lines to one o the said carton elements, means whereby suction in said chamber shall be applied at predetermined points to said carton elements,'and means for delivering the blanks and linings from the cylinder, two longitudinal segmental parts with said cylinder, each said part being formed with its own suction chamber and ports connecting said suction chambers succesively to the source of suction, a large number of said apertures being distributed over the surface of the cylinder and means for selectively closing said apertures whereby suction is a plied through the cylinder on predetermine lines and means for varying the-length of lining blank sheet material to be fed on to said cylinder at each operation.
12. In apparatus for producing lined cartons, a moving surface and means for feeding a carton blank simultaneously with a sheet of lining material on to said moving surface, means with said moving surface adapted to apply suction to the lining, the said surface by its movement delivering the registering sheet and carton therefrom, means for applying an adhesive to one of the said two carton members on predetermined lines before they are brought into registration and means for pressing them together, a device for feeding lining blanks'on to said moving surface, said movin surface being brought successively opposite the said device for feeding lining blanks so as to pick up the said lining blanks by suction and to carry the said blanks to a delivery point for receiving the. carton blanks, and a pair of feeding rollers adjustable translatably towards and away from the said moving surface by'a screw feed device for varying the length of lining blank sheet to be fed .on to said surface. 13. Apparatus for producing lined cartons rial at its delivery end relative of suction, apertures provided in the cylinder wall communicating with said suction chamber, means for feeding carton blanks and lining sheets on to the periphery of said cylinder, means for applying adhesive on predetermined lines to one of the said carton elements, means whereby suction in said chamber shall be applied at predetermined points to said carton elements, and means for delivering the blanks and linings from the cylinder, and means for adjusting the position of the lining material at its delivery end relative to the said cylinder in order to ob tain correct registration of the lining and carton blanks.

In apparatus for producing lined cartons, a moving surface and means forfeeding a carton blank simultaneousl with a comprising a rotating cylinder, a suction chamber in the cylinder connected to'a source sheet of lining material on to sai moving V for applying an adhesive to one of the said two carton members on predetermined lines before they are brought into registration and means for pressing them together, a device for feeding lining blanks-on to said moving surface, said moving surface being brought successively opposite the said device for feeding lining blanks so as to pick up the said lining blanks by suction and to carry the said blanks to a delivery point for receiving the carton blanks, a large number of suction apertures in said sur ace, and means for selectively closing said apertures whereby suction is applied to the lining on predetermined lines, a pastin roller over which the carton blanks are fe to said moving surface, the said pasting roller bein shaped to apply paste to the carton 'blan s on the lines onwhich the lining blanks are adapted to be adhered to the carton blanks, and a roller over which the lining material is passed, said roller being located, so as to loop in the path of travel ofthe limn material, and being translatably adjustab e for adjusting the position of the lining1 mateto t e said cylinder in order to obtain correct registration of the lining and carton blanks.
15. Apparatus for producing lined cartons comprising a rotary cylinder divided longitudinally into two parts, a source of suction to the interior 0 both of said parts suction holes in the workin surfaces of said two parts adapted to be so ectively opened and closed, a support for a stack of cartonblanks on one side of said cylinder, and arotary support for a roll of lining material on the other side of said cylinder, means for feedplace a ing the carton blanks successively from the means for drawing from the roll of lining material predetermined lengths of lining material and feeding the succzs'sively to the lower side of said cyl iixder, the suction in said cylinder picking up the lining blanks successively and conveyin them to and laying them in predetermme re 'stration with the carton blanks and means or subsequent- 1y pressing the individual carton and linblanks together and delivering them on to a collecting device.
