March 1, 1932. F. A. CORNELL PACKING BOX Filed Dec. 21, 1928 I N VEN TOR. F'Jzei (of Yell.
/ ATTORNEY.
Patented Mar. 1, 1932 NFTED' STATES PACKING BOX Application filed. December 21, 1928. semi No. 327,541.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a packing box adapted for use as a container in which to pack potatoes, apples and similar articles.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a packing box in which especially potatoes may be pack-ed for retail trade so that the potatoes may be dispensed in the package.
10 It is an other object of the present invention to provide a package so constructed and arranged as to ventilate the contents thereof so as to prevent overheating and rotting of the same.
15 It is another object of the present invention to provide a packing box of this class which will be simple in structure, economical of manufacture and highly eificient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood from J a reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the invention closed.
' Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invential partially open.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
and 10, each havinga flap 11 at one edge and e a flap 12 at the other edge. These flaps are of less width than one-half ofthe length on the walls 7 and are folded inwardly, they will be spaced apart by the space 18 as shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2. The flaps on the walls 8 and 9 are similarly constructed so that they do not meet when folded into closed position, leaving the space'l extending there- Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from' of the walls 8 and 9 so that when the flaps between. This provides an opening 13' at the center of the box and the top of the box being formed in the same manner as the bottom, the opening 13 inthe top is in alignment with a similar opening 13" in the bottom. The flaps forming the bottom of the container when folded inwardly, may be glued or otherwise suitably secured in position and the flaps forming the top of the box may also be glued or tied in position as desired.
With a box constructed in this manner, the contents thereof are thoroughly ventilated so that potatoes and the like may be delivered to the grocery store in these containers which, will be constructed of a specified size so as to contain a certain number of pounds of the commodity with which filled and, thus there is afforded a more'convenient package for dispensing articles of this kind.
In this manner, there is afforded a packing case in which articles of this kind may be enclosed for a long period of time so as to obviate the necessity of packing and wrapping the articles in the store when dispensed to the retail trade. The ventilation assures protection to the articles from rotting or overheating. The opening 13' may also serve as a finger hold whereby the top forming flaps may be moved to open position and whereby, if desired, the package itself maybe carried.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of my invention, I donot wish to limit myself to the precise details of structure shown but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A packing box of the class described, comprising: side walls; a flap on opposite edges of each of said side walls foldable inwardly to provide a top and a'bottom for said box. the flaps on one pair of side walls overis lying the flaps on the other pair, the flaps on each pair of side walls being, whenfolded V inwardly, spaced apart ,at their adjacent edges, said flaps together forming a ventilating opening centrally of said box at the top and bottom thereof and providing a channel leading to said opening from opposite sides of said box at the top and bottom, said opening being of a size preventing the passage of 5 the contents of said box therethrough.
2. A packing box of the class described, comprising: side walls; bottom and top forming flaps on opposite edges of each of said side walls foldable inwardly and so 14 formed that when folded inwardly a top and bottom for the box may be formed having a central ventilating opening communicating with a channel extending from end to end of the top and bottom, said flaps forming the 15 only closure for the top and bottom of said box and said openingbeing-sufliciently small for preventing'the passage of the contents of said boxtherethrough.
In testimony whereof I have signed the go foregoing specification. V V
. FRED A. CORNELL.
