Description

March 1, 1932. s. s. TORRISI 1,847,198
DETACHABLE HOT WATER UNIT FUR FAUCETS Filed Sept. 6. 1930 IN VENTOR:
A TTORNEXY Patented Mar. 1, 1932 PATENT OFFICE SAMUEL S. TORRISI, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA DETACHABLE HOT WATER UNIT FOR FAUCETS g Application filed September 6, 1930. Serial No. 480,046.
This invention, stated in its broadest terms, relates to a Water heater and has more especial relation to that type of device which is electrically heated.
The leading object of the present inveni' tion may besaid to reside in the providing of a device which is self-contained, portable, and arranged for ready, detachable connection as a unit to the cold Water faucet of conf l.. ventional plumbing.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a unit to include novel devices for automatically operating an electric switch whereby a circuit through resistance '15 coils of the heater may be made by the flow of cold Water through the device.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a device of the character stated in which the opening or closing of al faucet to Which the device is detachably connected operates to make or break the circuit through the resistance coils of the heating element. y y
A still further object of the present inveni tion is to provide a two-part casing of bakesi? resistance coils of the heating element.
A still further objectof the present invention is to provide a device of the character stated in which the supply of electric current to the resistance coils of the heater is controlled manually in addition to the automatic switch Which is controlled by the stoppage of running Water.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a device of the charactel` stated in Which electric current to the resistance coils of the heating element is supplied through a Wall plug and socket.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a device of the character stated in Which a casing'of molded insulatbakelite.
ing material is provided With a detachable ycap for supporting the heating element including its resistance coils.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction hereinafterdescribed and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention Will be more fully underst-ood from the following description taken in connection With the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which: i'
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of a hot Water unit embodying the invention and showing the samein application to a faucet;
Fi g. 2 is a view in central section of the unit 6,. shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is atop or plan View of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the reference numeral 10 designates a casing of molded insulating material, preferably of The casing 10 is provided With a horizontal extension 11 terminating in a vertical stem 12 having a generally flared mouth 13 provided With a seat u on which is fitted a Washer or gasket 14, pre erably of some pliable material as rubber. The flaringmouth l 1.3 is interiorly screw threaded to'receive a mouth piece 15, which mouth piece inpractice is screwed down upon the Washer or gasket 14:. The casing 10 also has extended therefrom a horizontally arranged extension 16 provided With a spout 17. Interiorly the casing 10 is provided with a chamber 18 which is in communication With the eXtensions 12 and 16, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. 8 In practice these extensions at the time of molding of the casings are provided with passages, and in order to Withdraw the core during a molding process it is necessary to employ core openings, and in order to cover these core openings when the device is'completed, use is made of core plugs 19. The passage in the extension 11 is provided with a floating valve 20 having therein a passage 21 terminating in an open port. This lioating valve is so arranged that as Water Hows through the passage in the valve this open port 22 is caused to register with the chamber 18 and permit the iow of Water into the chamber 18. The loatingivalve is provided with a stop 23 to prevent undue rearward movement of the valve. The forward end of the valve is provided with a pin 2li which 1s adapted to abut against the free end of the leaf spring 25 which is secured as at 2G to the inside of casing l0. The spring 25 is provided with a contact point 26 which in the forward movement of the floating valve is adapted to contact with a contact point 27 carried by leaf spring 28, which is lined as at 29 to the bottom of the casing l0. The casing l0 at its upper part is interiorly screw threaded to detachably receive a head 30 passing vertically through which are elongated screws 31 and 34: secured with respect to said head by lock nuts 32. Arranged within the chamber 18 are resistance coils 3S electrically connected with respect to screw 3l and to the spring 28. Electrically connect ing screw 3a with spring 25 is a lead Fitted to the head 30 are upwardly projecting screws 3G. Seated pon head 30 is a disc .37 which is held in position by the screws 3G. This disc 37 is provided with contact pieces 38 and 39, of which contact 38 is connected to screw 3l and contact 39 is connected to screw 34. Connecting the contacts 38 and 39 are conductors i0 and il which are in electrical connection with plug 42 adapt-ed for connection with socket 43, see F ig. l. The conductors 4l() and Lll lead into a cap #la seated upon disc 37 and are in electrical connection with any conventional form of switch operable by means of a knob l5.
A description will now be given of the manner of using the above described novel device for heating water from a faucet 46 as shown in Fig. l. That end of the device which is provided with the rubber washer la is fitted over the spout of a faucet i6 and the plug Ll2 caused to engage socket 4f. `With the turning on of the faucet e'r-G a stream of cool water passes through the passage in eX- tension l2 and causes the floating valve 2'() to move to the left in Fig. 2, thereby causing the contact points 26 and 2T to form an electrical connection for the passage of current through the resistance coils 33, it being understood that electrical current is passing through conductor 40, contact strip 38, screw 2li, resistance coil 33 to spring 28, contact points 26 and 27, spring 25, conductor 35, screw 32, contact strip 39, and conductor 4:1, back to the plug 4t2. In tracing the above circuit it will of course be understood that the switch l5 has been moved to operative position. As long as cool water passes through the faucet 86 through the floating valve 20 the resistance coil 33 heats the water and it passes through spout 17. As soon as the flow of water is shut olf at the faucet 46 the spring 25 moves the floating valve 20 back to normal position and the electrical circuit is immediately broken.
By the above described arrangement of recrues parts it is apparent that when water ceases to flow from the faucet 416 electrical connection is automatically broken, so that heating of the resistance coils stops. However, if for any reason it be desired to shut oil the current to the resistance coils the same may be accomplished by means of switch Ll5 without disconnecting the plug 42 from socket 43.
I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and l therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing' description to indicate the scope of the invention.
lNhat l claim is:
l. As new article of manufacture, a portable hot water heater comprising an integral body of insulating material haring opposite ly disposed integral extensions arranged to be detachably secured to the spout of a cold water faucet for self support, said heater comprising a casing of circular cross-section having a chamber arranged for the continuous, uninterrupted passage therethrough of cold water, electrical means including horizontally arranged coils within said chamber for heating the water as it flows through the heater, said means including an electrical circuit arranged to be automatically closed by the continuous flow of water and adapted to be automatically opened by the cessation oi water flow, a plug and socket forming part of said electrical circuit, and a manually operable switch included in said circuit for controlling the same independently of said automatic control.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a portable device for heating water comprising a tubular casing of insulating material, said casing being provided with oppositely disposed integral extensions, one of which extensions is upturned and arranged for detachable connection with a faucet and the other of which extensions is downwardly turned for delivery of heated water, and means including electrical heating coils electrically connected within and insulated by said casing for heating water passing through said casing from said upturned and downturned e2:-
