This invention relates to can filling devices, andhas for an object to provide structural features, forming apart of the entire organization of a canning machine, which provides improved means for insuring the introduction into the can, of the entireivolume of maternal measured for that purpose.
A further object of the invention is to provide a funnel-like device, directed toward a supported can, with improved -means for varying the delivering orifice in said funnel.
A further object of the invention is to provide about such funnel construction, a space to permit the escape of air as the can is filled, to insure the proper filling of the'can.
A further object of the invention is to provide in the structure, surrounding the funnel, and between which structures and the air space so provided, improved means to insure the drip of any splashed material back into the can.
The invention comprises, in combination with a rotating structure, arotating table for supporting a plurality of cans, a structure located above said rotating table, and provided and possesses other features of novelty and advantage, some of which, together with the foregoing, will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The improved can filling device, which forms the subject matter of this application, is adapted to be associated with rotating canning machines, of various types, and no showing of any machine part, is to beconstrued as a limitation upon the present invention.
A rotating table v10, is provided for supportinga plurality of cans 11, beneath arotating turretl2, such turret rotating insynch'ronis'm with the table 10. Any approved means is provided for raising or lowering the table 10,

The turret 12, is provided with a vpositioned, as to be concentric 'of' the cams 11,- as positioned upon the table 10. This opening may be of such size as may be found convenient, the size of the cam being taken into consideration. It'should, however, provide some overlap, as indicated'at 14, anda groove 15, is formed in said overlap providingasharp rib 16, located above the can.

In any case, the size of the funnel, where it passes through theopenings 13, is less than the size of said opening so that an annular Vent space is provided entirely around said funnel. The funnel is P ably provided with a sharplofwe edge .19, and a.bushing 20 isinserted in) the lower end of said funnel, such bushing being mere'ly dropped in and heldby gravity, and replaced by other bushings, constricting'the delivery orifice of the funnel. Such bushings will be changed from time to time, as the material being operated upon is changed, that is to say, the more fluid the material, the smaller the orifice, andconversely, the'greater the vi-s-j 'cosity, the larger the orifice. The structure, above outlined, hasrbeen providedjin view of the diflieulty in filling cans without proper vents; I T Q 7 To prevent spilling or slopping the con tents, it is necessary to clamp the can against "got the under side of the turret, and thereby,
make the joint approximately air-tight so that the material being delivered to the can, from the funnel, forms a seal which prevents the proper flow of the material. By venting, the air seal is broken, and the material flows uninterruptedly through the orifice, out of the funnel,or the bushing, into the can. By providing the groove 15, with the sharp rib 16, any of the contents slopped upwardly, because of the discharge into the can, will drip from the sharp edge, into the can with minimum adherence.
Of course, the can filling device, hereinillustrated, may be modified in various ways without departing from the invention herein set forth and hereinafter claimed.
The invention 'is hereby claimed as follows: v
- 1. A can filling device comprising acan supporting structure, a super-structure arranged to, clamp cans upon the supporting structure and provided with openings communicating with the several cans, drip speedingparts' carried by said super-structure overlying the can, funnels inserted through said openings and forming a vent between the funnel and the walls of the openings, and orifice constricting members positioned in the smaller ends of the funnels.
