Description

Feb. 16, 1932. B|RRELL 1,845,698
BOT'IILE STOPPER Filed Aril 21, 1950 A llorney Patented Feb. 16, 1932 JAMES IBIBRELL, or Laronr-E, Texas BOTTLE STOPPE'R Application filed April 21, 1980. Serial No. 446,030.
This invention relates to flexible hollow bottle stoppers and especially those adapted to function additionally as a dropper.
A main object of the invention is to provide a stopper of the above mentioned character especially adapted to avoid compression of the stopper incident to its removal from a bottle mouth, and designed for use with mercurochrome and iodine bottles, and further to provide a combined stopper and dropper of this character which will afford a greater spread of liquid, will be inexpensive, and which will otherwise be found useful in applying mercurochrome or iodine to a cut, bruise or the like.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during a study of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is an elevational view of a bottle and a stopper associated therewith embodying the features of the present invention,
igure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional a view taken through the stopper,
Figure 3 is a horizontal transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
lVith reference more in detail to the drawings, it will be seen that I have designated my improved dispensing stopper by the ref-c At the junction of the body 7 and bulb 6 there is provided an outstanding circumferential flange or shoulder 8 adapted to rest opposite the upper end of the neck of a bottle when the body or sealing portion 7 of the stopper is inserted within the neck, Figure 1,
and to serve an important purpose in the removal of the stopper from the bottle mouth as hereinafter set forth.
The body 7 is provided with a conical bore 9 which at its apex communicates with a vertical central bore 10 formed in a nib or extension 11 at the lowermost end of the body 7 The nib 11 acts as a spreader for the liquid as the liquid is discharged through the bore 10 of the nib.
The orifice or bore 10 provides a narrow filling and dropping orifice or bore thus tending :10 suitably restrict the outflow of the n actual practice the body portion 7 of the stopper will extend into the neck of the bottle 4 a considerable distance. To fill the stopper, thebottle with the stopper therein may be inverted, and the liquid drawn into the stopper by compressing and releasing the bulb 6.
The conical bore in the body or stopper 7 permits of more air space in the stopper thus allowing a great quantity of the liquid to be drawn therein. In dispensing the liquid from the stopper, the nib 11 may be utilized as a spreader for spreading the medicine over the bruise, the liquid bein expelled through said nib by compression of the bulb 6.
The flange 8 is for use in withdrawing the stopper from the bottle month without compression of the stopper and the discharge from the stopper of the liquid previously drawn into the same through the minute aperture 10. Stoppers frequently get set in bottle mouths and require pulling and twisting and the application of considerable stress for their release and removal, and but for the flange 8, the pulling and twisting of the stopper would be attended by the expressing therefrom of the liquid previously drawn into the stopper. In other words, the integral outstanding ring-like flange braces the compressible wall against compression during the act of removing the stopper from the bottle.
Even though I haveherein shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible to changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described, and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
A one piece molded conical hollow rubber stopper, being imperforate except at its apex,
PATENT OFFICE till li i v designed for use as a dropper, a portion of the Wall of said stopper being collapsible under pressure to expel a drop of fluid contained therein; said stopper being provided at a point substantially midway between its apex and other end With an integral outstanding ring-like flange bracing the compressible Wall against compression during the act of removing the stopper from the bottle.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JAMES BIRRELL.
