rlhis pgent refers to certain new and useful improvement-s in luminous signs in which letters, numbers and/or Y designs may .be formed, as desired.

In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I have illustrated it in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. l is a front view of the sign.

In these figures A. is a frame and A is a counter-frame which support two plates B and B. Between these two plates a piece of cloth or fabric C of a convenientweight, or any other such like material, is placed.

The plates B and B have a plurality of coincident holes G of the same diameter, and the cloth or fabric piece C has a plurality of cuts H which coincide respectively, in position, with the holes G of the plates B and B. Behind this body as described, a box like body D is dismountably attached. Inside the box D there is a plurality of sockets each carrying an electric bulb E, the number of bulbs depending on the size of the sign. The inner surface of the box D is mirrored to' reflect These bulbs receive the necessary current from an outside source, not shown in the drawings.

F (Fig. 3) shows one of the glass or crystal bars, with its ends plain or faceted, in cross section, of a convenient length and of a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the holes Gr. The bars F are placed in the holes G in such numbers and comb-ination as to form the desired letters, numbers or designs. The ends of these bars F extend beyond the outside surface of the plates B and B and are maintained in their places by the pressure exerted on them by the edges of the cuts I-I while the horizontal position of the bars in relation to the sign is assured by the thickness of the plates B and B and the cloth piece C, as a body.

The letters, numbers or design having been formed on the sign with the bars F, and the electric bulbs having been lit, the light will only pass through the bars F and thus illunnne the letters, numbers, design and the like,

while no light will pass through the unoc cupied holes G, as the cloth piece C will prevent the passage of the light.

It is obvious that certain modifications may be made as regards the holes G in the plates B and B and the cuts H in the cloth piece C, also, only the plate B may be used, this plate carrying convenient supports on its inner surface for-the glass bars, and suitable means for closing the holes G when not in use, without departing from the scope of the invention.

What I claim is:

A luminous sign comprising an outer frame, an inner frame, a pair of plates supported by the inner frame and each having a plurality of apertures coincidently arranged therethrough, a curtain of opaque cloth arranged between the two plates and having a plurality of cross slits arranged therein so as to coincide with the apertures in the plates, a plurality of glass bars of a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the apertures and arranged through certain of the apertures so as to form a desired outline, a boxlike reflecting body carried by the inner frame, illuminating means withinthe body, .the cross slits in the cloth curtain acting to frictionally engage the glass bars to facilitate the retention of the same in the apertures, and the remaining slits not engaged by the bars serving to prevent the passage of light through the unobstructed apertures.
