COMBINATION PIPE AND LIGHTER Filed March 16, 1929 fizz/auto! Kempiionfliveletb Patented 16,1932 I 4 UNITED STATES V KEMIPTON ARTHUR EVELETH, OF PORTLAND, MAINE" commn'rron PIPE AND moms.
Application filed-larch 16, 1929. Serial No. $47,885. Y
My invention relates to smoking 1 s and partlcularly to a combined pipe an ighter. There are many occasions on which the smoker is either disappointed for lack of a match 5 or of the owner ofa so-called automatic lighter for lack of ability to li ht his pipe, as for example, in wind or dra t. Furthermore, the annoyance of plural smoking necessities results frequently in misplacement of I i ition means or at best in thecollection of t ese various items from various pockets. My concept analyzes the main problem as the pipe and a multiple lighter, referably of so-called automatic type. Suc lighters 16 have become what may be called a habitnecessity. While well adapted to the uses of the cigarette smoker, they are not in themselvesas at present constituted well adapted to the needs of the pipe smoker because of 20 the delay betweenignition and application of the flame to the filled bowl.
This delay due to the motion of ap-I plication following the motion of ignition has two main difliculties. One is that of possible or probable 'extinguishment, and the other is that of-the waste of fuel. My invention avoids these difficulties by its combination with the pipe and the pipe bowl sothat the lighter is not only. a part of the pipe, but its igniting function takes place at the very brim of the bowl so that the first flash of the flame falls on the surface of the to! bacco fill.
My invention may be best understood by reference to an embodiment and I therefore have shown in the accompanying drawings an embodiment which illustrates both general principle and also a convenient and practical embodiment. In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view illustrative of'the'light- -ried asany ordinary pipe, in or out of case,
an ignition member 3. As shown this is a so-called flint set in a recess 3 so. as to be removable and replaceable. It is preferably set vertically of the bowl 1 so that its upper end is adjacent the bowl brim 1 Y The type of lighter 5 as illustrated is of the usual fuel magazine type and may be of any desired form, but for manufacturing purposes I prefer the cylindric type as the pocket for this may be a cylindrical bore 4 so as by a drill, giving an extinguishing end 4 when the blazing lighter is thrust therein. The lighter 5 of the type to which preference is given is provided with a wick W and a frictionbutton' 5 which is adapted to be struck on the flint 3 to produce the flame fildlcated in Fig. 1 as F. As shown in Fig. 1 this flame at the moment of being struck is in such a position as to be drawn directly onto the surface of the tobacco T.
In the particular combination shown of the so-called poker. pipe type, the lighter 5 becomes in the ipe base a stabilizer to assure the position o the pipe on its fiat base 1 However; the bowl land stem 6 may be of any design and the lighter chamber may be located conveniently according to the general pipe design.
In use the combined pipe and lighter is cari or in any position in pocket or on smokers tray.
Upon filling as usual the lighter is simply withdrawn from the pipe and by a simple up-stroke the first burst of flame from the wick W is directly on the surface of the tobacco'in the bowl as shown in Fig. 1, with 7 every reasonable chance of an instant light. This is assured by the position of the flint or other ignition element 3 which as indicated in Fig. 4 is removable from its recess 3 for replacement. As before stated, the
' element may be variously located but preferably for efficiency and economy should be adjacent the lip or brim of the bowl 1.
Also, the lighter may be variously constituted and variously struck. It is, however, of a ty e frictioning at the igniter point. p
A 1 these matters of design and use may we be varied, but are all contemplated as within the disclosure above given.
What I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 5 A smokers pipe comprising a bowl member having a recess on its rear face adjacent the brim thereof, said bowl having a tobacco chamber, a removable and replaceable ignition member in said recess, said bowl member having a thickened base below said chamber, said base having a pocket to receive and hold an ignition device and having an entrance beneath said ignition member, a lighter in said pocketadapted to be withdrawn through said entrance and upwardly across said ignition member whereby to ignite said lighter and thence drawn directly across said tobacco chamber.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature. KEMPTON ARTHUR EVELETH.
