Description

Nov. 26, 1929. E, DAVIDSON 1,737,109
TEMPORARY BINDER Filed July 16 1925 FigZ. N 8 7 Eli Davidson b imzwwm I Aflys.
Patented Nov. 26, 1929 STATES UNETE ELI DAVIDSON, or oneness, 'mAs'sAoHUsEtrrs TEMPORARY BINDER Application filed July 16,
This invention relates to a temporary binder and has for its general object to provide a temporary binder or cover of novel construction which is adapted to receive a filling. Another object of the invention is to provide a temporary binder in which the filling is detachably retained in place by means of two hook-likc members which are secured to the back of the cover and are movable toward and from each other and the hook portions of which are adapted to enter pockets formed in the edges of the filler at the back thereof.
Other objects of the invention will be more fully hereinafter set forth in connection with the following description of some selected embodiments of my invention.
In the drawings:
1 is a perspective view showing a temporary binder embodying my invention;
Fig. 2. is a fragmentary detail View illustrating the way in which the filler is placed in the cover;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the back of the cover and the filling;
Fig. 1 is section on the line 44, Fig. 3; Figs. 5 and 6 are views of the two filler holding members separated from each other. Referring to Figs. 1 to 6 the cover portion or temporary binder is indicated generally at 1 and it comprises the two covers 2 and 3 connected by the back portion 4; as usual in a device of this sort. 5 indicates a filler which may be a single leaf or a plurality of leaves bound together. In the construction 33 illustrated in Fig. 1 it is shown as a plurality of leaves which are bound together at the back by a binding strip 6 which may be of cloth or metal or any suitable material. This binding strip is secured to the leaves of 41 the filler in such a way as to leave a pocket or space 7 between the back 8 of the binding strip and the back of the filler. The temporary binder is provided with a filler-holding member adapted to enter this pocket 7.
In the construction of Figs. 1 to 6 this fil er-holding member comprises two elements 9 and 10 which are in the form of strips and each of which is provided with a hook portion, the latter being indicated at 11 and 12 respectively. These two elements 9 and 10 1925. Serial No. 44,104..'
are located in the back 1 of the covers. They are placed in overlapping relation and are movable relative to each other so as to permit the hook portions 11 and 12 to be separated sufliciently to receive the filler or to be moved toward each other to cause said hooks to enter the ends of the pockets 7.
The covers herein shown .are the usual kind having the stiff board bodies 15 which are covered with an outer facing layer 13. The overlapping elements 9 and 10 are situatedbetween the board covers 15 and are confined between the outer facing layer 13 and an inner strip 14 which is adhesively secured to the inner faces of the covers adjacent the back. r
One of these members may be slidably mounted. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 6 the member 10is fixed in position and retained therein by means of a rivet 16 which extends through the. back 4:. The element 9 isprovided with a slot 17 through which the rivet 16 passes and said slot permits said element to slide back and forth and to be moved from the full to the dotted line position Fig. 3 and vice versa.
When a filler is to be inserted into the hinder the holder element 9 will be pulled outwardly into the dotted line possition Fig. 3 and into the full line position Fig. 2. The filler may then be placed in position so that the hook 12 will enter one end of the pocket 7 after which the holder element 9 may be moved into the full line position of Fig. 3 thereby causing the hook 11 to enter the other end of the pocket 7. The filler will then be firmly secured to the cover.
To remove the filler all that is necessary is to raise the filler upwardly into the dotted line position Fig. 1 and in doing this the holder element 9 will be moved outwardly into the full position Fig. 1 and into the dotted line position Fig. 3. This movement of the filler will withdraw the hook 12 from the lower end of the pocket 7 and the filler may then be tipped slightly and moved downwardly to withdraw the hook 11 from the upper end of said pocket. 7
I may, if desired, make one of the holder elements with a projection or protuberance 18 adapted to enter a recess 19 formed in the other element when the two elements are in their operative position shown in full lines Fig. 3. This will assist in holding the holder element 9 from beng accidentally moved into its open position.
I claim: I p
A temporary binder for a filler having a pocket at its back which extends from the top to the bottom edge thereof and which is open at each edge, said binder comprising a back member and covers hinged thereto, a pair of filler-holding members carried by the back member, each filler-holding member when in operative position extending from one end to the other of the back member and each provided at one end with a hook portion to enter the pocket of the filler, an anchoring rivet ex tending through both filler-holding members and fixedly securing the-outside filier-holding member to the back member of the cover, the inner filler-holding member having a slot through which the rivet passes so that said member can be adjusted longitudinally so as I to move the hooks relatively toward and from each other, and a protuberance on one fillerholding member adapted to enter a recess formed in the other filler holding member thereby to hold the said members yieldingly in adjusted position, said protuberance and recess permitting the filler-holding members to be adjusted relatively to each other simply by applyingforce to said members in the direction of their length.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
