This invention relates to improvements in a door or window fastening device, and has for its object to provide a fastener which is applicable for use in connection with either a window or door.

A principal object of the invention is to provide in a door or window fastener having a pivoted slide bolt a spring control therefor.

A further object of the invention is to pro- 19 vide in combination with a window or door fastenin device, filler or spacer bars for filling in space between the member being fastoned and the fastener bolt.

With the above and such other objects in view as may hereinafter more fully appear, I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification and in the several views in the drawings in which 1 indicates a latch consisting of a U- shaped keeper 2, between the upper and lowor walls 3 and 4 of which is mounted a bolt 5, pivotally and slidably mounted between said walls 8 and 4 by means of a pin 6 operating in an elongated slot 7 in the member 5. This member 5 may be held in inoperative position parallel with the walls 3 and 4;; by means of the pin 6, the said member 5 may be drawn to the rear extremity of the slot 7, and turned at right angles to said walls 3 and 4 and pushed through an opening 8 in the rear wall 9 of he U-member to the forward limit of the slot 7, whereby the member 5 will be held in rigid, fixed, right-angular position relative to the walls l and 5, and thus hold the door .10 fastened. To prevent the member 5 fromv slipping forward out of the opening 8, through shaking or rattlingof the door, in which case it would immediately drop to unlatched position, I provide a spring 11, held by the pin 6 having its rear end 12 formed into-a roll to drop into the transverse groove 13 on the rear end 14 of the bolt 5; thus the bolt will be heldby said spring against accidental displacement from its fastening po-, sitionI The forward end of the member 5 is provided with opposing grooves 15, and 16, which form finger'holes by means of which the said lock member may be readily manipulated.

'As it often happens that when a dooris closed the plane of its outer surface 21 is inward] y of the plane of the frame .22, I provide a special spacer bar 24; of different transverse dimensions, the width of the surface 25 of which is substantially double the length of the width of the edge 26, and screw openings 27 are provided along the surface 25 and screw openings 28 are provided extending edgewise through the bar in order that the said block may beused in either position to space between the said door and the inner surface of the bolt 5, when in operative position. I also provide another'spacer bar 29, which may be seated upon the surface 26 in order to build up said surface, if the space between the door and bolt is not as great as the width of the said bar 2%.

In Figure 3 I show the device as a window latch in which case the lower wall 4 is extended at each end to form ears 17 and 18, in which are provided screw holes 19, whereby the vdevice may be attached to the upper surface of the sash member 20; otherwise the construction is similar to the one previously described. These ears are essential elements in the. construction as screws cannot be placed through the walls 3 and 4' to hold the mounting member in place,

because to do so would render the bolt 5 inoperative. i

The spring 11 in this form of the invention is also an essential element, as Without the spring to hold the lock against acci-' dental or intentional movements through vibration by an unauthorized person, the bolt 5 might easily be caused to creep out of its locked position through constant tapping upon the outer surface of the window sash, after which a knife or other tool might be slipped between the sashes and the bolt thus moved out of latching engagement with the lower sash. In the rear edge of the wall 4 there is provided a recess 31 to receive the right angular flange 32 of the spring 11, whereby said spring is held against rotatable action and secured in its proper position at all times.

Having now described my invention, that which I claim to be new, and desire to procure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A fastening device of the character described, comprising a U shaped base member having a rear wall, an aperture, a bolt pivoted to the base member and having slidable movement relative thereto and adapted to project at end through said opening, and means fastened to the base member for holding the bolt bar against accidental movement, said means consisting of a leaf spring provided with roll end, a spacer bar forming a seat for said bolt bar when in operative position, said space bar comprising a member of two different transverse dimensions and having a hole at each end of thickness.

2. A fastening device of the character described comprising a U shaped base member having a rear Wall, an aperture, a bolt pivoted to the base member and having slidable movement relative thereto and adapted to project at end through said opening, and means fastened to the base member for holdthe bolt bar against accidental movement, said means consisting of a leaf spring provided with roll end, the under wall of base member having ear extending so that said fastening device can be attached to Window sash. I

3. A fastening device comprising a U shaped base member, a bolt member carried thereby, and means for maintaining said bolt bar in operative position, said means con sisting of a leaf spring provided with a roll end, and said bolt bar having a recess to receive said roll, and means for retaining said leaf spring against lateral movement, said means including a right angular terminal on said leaf spring, and said bolt bar having grooves at end so that said bolt bar can be operated with case.
