UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COMBINED TUB AND SHOWER BATH.
Application iled June 5, 1928.
This invention relates to a combined tub and shower bath which will be particularly useful on board ships, but obviously the invention is not limited to use on shipboard.
One object of the invention is to provide a comfortable and adequate bath occupying the smallest possible floor space, said bath having a shower arranged to direct a sufficient supply of water to thoroughly rinse the entire body, and to dispense with the usual movable curtain.
Another object is to provide such a bath and shower with a permanent partition so arranged that entrance and exit of the bather is not hindered and yet splashing of the water from the shower is prevented, and the adjacent toilet protected from the splash of water from the bath.
Another object is to provide a bath including a shower and a toilet so associated that they can be placed in a very small room, the plumbing for both the bath and toilet being compactly arranged.
These and further objects will be appa-rent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a vertical cross section of the bath and toilet room, taken on line 1-1 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 2 is a plan of the room, taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4l is a broken view of a modified form of tub, and
Fig. 5 is a partial section similar to Fig. 3 of this modified form.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, there is shown a rectangular bath and toilet room having the walls 1. Occupying the width of the room at one end is the tub 2. It will be understood that while this is a convenient arrangement, the tub does not of necessity occupy the entire width of the room, but may be fitted in a suitable recess. This tub has the usual rolled edges 3, the front edge being continued downwardly to the floor t0 form a front 4, or other suitable construction appropriate to the location and surroundings. The tub 2 is built with a raised portion Serial No. 283,078.
5 at one end to provide a seat for the bather, said seat being about 5 inches below the upper edge of the tub.
The shower for thetub comprises a perforated pipe 6 connected to the hot and cold water pipes 7, there being valves 8 in each connection. The pipe 6 is so arranged that it occupies a position about the neck of a bather seated on seat 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. A partition 9 is secured to the Walls 1 and extends lengthwise of the tub slightly beyond seat 5, whereby the water from the pipe 6 cannotsplash out of the tub and ample room is provided beyond the end thereof to allow the bather to enter. This partition may be marble, slate, or any other suitable material. It will be understood that this partition may be formed integral with the tub, if desired. The handles for the valves 6 project through partition 9 to a point of ready accessibility. A drain 10, orltrolled by a valve 11, is provided for the A toilet bowl 12 having the usual handle 13'for flushing may be placed at an angle adjacent the partition 9. It will be noted that the piping for the bath and toilet are compactly arranged and may be inexpensively installed.
The combined bath and toilet as shown may be arranged in a room having a oor space of 3 ft. by 5 ft. The arrangement is 0bviously of great advantage where space is at a premium, such as on shipboard.
In Figs. 4 and 5 a somewhat similar arrangement is shown, the tub 2, however, being provided with a portable seat instead of seat 5. This portable seat has rigid braces 14 secured t0 a seat 15, and they have rubber inserts 16 for engagement with the rolled edges 3 of the tub.
Various modications may be made in the structural details which will come within the purview of this invention, as expressed in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A bath tub and shower having a raised seat near one end thereof, a perforated pipe at a height to be at the level of the neck of a bather seated on said seat, said pipe being curved to conform substantially to the outline of said tubt and a partition arranged along one longitudinal edge of said tub and extending to a point beyond said seat, and 5. valve handles for controlling the flow of Water in said perforated pipe projecting through `said partition.
2. A bath tub Vand shower comprising .an oblong tub7 the bottom of said tub having 10 a raised seat, said Seat extending approximately one-half the Alength of the tub, Walls extending upwardly from the upper rim of Said tub, along three sides thereof, and a partition along the fourth side of Said tub, l5 said partition terminating beyond said seat to thereby leave an opening for entrance t0 said tub, and a spray shower adjacent the neck of a bather seated on-said seat.
3. The structure as set forth in claim 2, wherein valve handles for controlling the flow of Water in said perforated pipe project through said partition.
In testimony whereof, I afix my signature.
HAROLD F. NORTON.
