Description

CHISEL. No. 171,815. Patented Ja n.4,18'7 6.

UNITED CHARLES JELL 'FFE', or ieavfonnn, new JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHISELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1715815, dated January 4, 1876; application filed June 21, 1875. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. L. JEL- LIFFE, of the city of Bayonne, county ofHudson and State of New Jersey, have invented, certain new and useful Improvements'in Chisels; and I do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of the same, in which- Figure 1 represents aside view. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view. Figs. 3 and 5 represent bottom views. Fig. 4 represents thecutting-bit and chisel-blade detached. Fig. 6 represents a sectional view out through line as a. Fig. 5. I
Like letters in all the figures refer to the same parts.
My invention consists. in-certain improvements in chisels, whereby the chisel blade or shank is adapted to receive and hold ill-sue .cession different widths and shapes of bits,
for the purpose of making different widths and shapes of cuts, as will be hereafter more fully explained.
The manner of constructing andpperating said improvements is as follows: I take a chisel-blade, shank, or other strip of suitable metal, to which a tang or socket is forged or formed, for the purpose of affixin g the handle or holder, similar to an ordinary chisel, (see Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6,-:A,) and on its outer end, and on one side thereof, which I herein designate the top side, mill out or otherwise form a dovetail, scarf-joiiit, or other suitable device, K, and on one side of another piece or pieces of suitable metal, B, mill out or otherwise form a similar joint, K, so that the joint on the one, when slipped laterally or otherwise placed together, will fit into the space or spaces on the other, and brace or hold against pressure applied at the end of the instrument, (this latter piece B being the cutting-bit,) and when so placed together to keep them from working apart when the instrument is in use, and also of allouing the cutting-bit B to be attached to, and detached from, thechisel blade or shank A readily and instantaneously. On one side of the aforesaid shank 01 blade A, which I herein designate the bottom side, I mill out or otherwise form a groove or slot, F, running lengthwise therewith nearly .upperend, under which there is a spring or other suitable device, and on its outer end form one or more prongs, S S, said prongs extending through and working in holes or indentures'lhflformed in the outer end of the chisel blade 01" :Slltl1k A, so that when the cutting-bit is slipped laterally or otherwise placed thereon, the prongs catch into the holes I or indentures T, formed therein, thereby keeping the cutting-bit firmly in place, ,andf om working loose or oil its seat when the instrument is in use.
Itwill also be seen, in the aforesaid described form or mode of securing the cutting-bit to the chisel blade or shank, that if the dovetail, or scarf joints K K are cut or formed at right angles with thecntting-bit and chisel blade or shank it would require a nicety of adjustment when placed together, that the prongs might instantaneouslycatch into the holes or indentures T in the cutting-bit; but to obviate this I cut or form the said joints K K, both on the bit and shank, (either on the right or left side thereof, as deemed convenient in using,) diagonally therewith, (see Fig. 4, R 1%,) or, in other words, one. s ide I make slightly wider than the other, so that when placed together it fitsaccurately in its proper position at once.
Figs. 5 and 6 represent bottom sectional and side. views of'a chisel "blade or shank, A, and cutting-bit B, having the dovetail or scarf joints K K milled out or othervdise formed lengthwise therewith, this latter form being equally simple, and I believe to be an equivalent mode of fastening the cutting-bit to the chisel blade or shank to the one heretofore described; but I prefer the former, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, the cutting-bit being more easily handled and adjusted thereon when in use.
The operation is as follows: When the cuttin g-bit is adjusted on the chisel-blade (the spring-catch, to allow of such adjustment, having previously had its prongs withdrawn by means of pressure on the thumb-piece) the upward pressure of the spring forces the prongs into the holes or indentures in the cutting-bit, and holds it therefirmly on the blade or shank in place for use.
This arrangement admits ofithe easy-anri informs of cutting-bit as widths and fqrmsof cut are required.
Now, having. fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is Witnesses: 4
JOEN'MCMA'JION,
GEORGE F. SPENCER.
