GAR-TRUCK HOLSTER CONSTRUCTION.

This invention relates to improvements in car truck bolster coiisti'uctiona-this appliration being a division oit application ior patent tiled by me on the 11th day oit January 11927, and designated by Serial No. 160,4t-ifl.
One object ot my present invention is to provide a bolster in which corner stresses incident to bolstcrs having a rectangular bon'- lile cross .section are redi'lced and to this end to so construct the bolster that its tension member shall be tapering `from its central portion. to its ends and have an arcuate cross section With a curvature oit substantially constant radius, from end to end, and to provide such a tapering bol-ster construction at its outer ends With spring seat members having horizontal under faces.
With this and other objects in vieiv, the invention consists in certain novel features ott construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.

The bolster 1 is made tapering trom its eentrai portion to its ends and in the embodiment ot the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3, it is made with an integral flat top web 2 which 'will accommodate attachments and bearings such as maybe necessary on the 'uplgier side o l" the bolster, and between said top web and the bottom oi? the tension member 3, an integral strengtl'iening 'Web 4 may be located.
The tension member 3 oi the bolster is arcuate in cross lsection and this arcuate torm :is continuous trom the central portion ot the bolster to its ends,--the cross sectional curvature oit the tension member being1 of sub stantially constant radins from end to end.
The bolster is preferably made of east steel Serial No. 237,016.

In the construction shown in F ig. 41;, the spring seat member 9 is made as a separate casting and is interengaged by means ot a lu l() on said member entering a socket 1]. formed :in the bolster,-said spring seat inem ber 9 having a concave top Web 12 to iit against the convex under side ot the portion G ot the" bolster and extend to the top of the same.
In the enibodiment oit the invention shown in Figs. 5 and (i, a bolster 13 oi the built-up type is employed, and the same is made tapering from its central portion to its ends. The tension member le has a transverse curvature which is oi substantially constant radius throughout the length oit the member. l'flanges 15 extend along the top edges of the bolster and a top plate 1G is secured upon said `flanges, said plate being dished at 17 and turned down at its outer end as at 1S, the portion 18 .fitting `within the tension meniiber and secured. thereto by fastening means 19.
A spring seat member 20 (preferably a casting) is provided at each end portion of the bolster and made with an upper curved tace to conform to the convex tace oi the tapering end. portion 21 oil the bolster, the bottom surtace ot the member 2U being horizontal :for the accommodation oi springs. The member or casting 2() .may be reinforced by side webs and intermediate webs 23. ',lhe seatifnember or casting 2O :interen gaged with the tension niiei'nber oit the holster through the medium oit a lug 2li projecting :from said seat member and entering a socket or spring inthe bottom portion of said tension member.

1. A truck bolster made taijiering from its central portion to its respective ends, the tension member oi? the bolster bein arcuate from its central portion te its ends, and provided y neetion with the latter.
3. A hollow truck bolster made tapering vfrom its central portion to its ends and having an arcuate cross section, and a separate spring seatmember conforming to the contour of each tapering and arcuate end portion of the bolster andhaving interengagingconnection therewith.
4. A hollow truck bolster made tapering from its central portion to its ends and having an arcuate cross section, each tapering end portion having a socket, a separate spring seat member conforming to the contour of each end portion of the bolster and haring a` lug,r to enter said socket.
5. A truck bolster comprising a tension member made tapering from the central portion of the bolster to its ends, said member having arcuate cross section, and a top member secured over said tension member, end portions oi said top member entering the tension member and secured to end portions thereof.
6. A truck bolster comprising ay tension member made tapering from the central portion of the bolster to its ends, said member lia-ving arcuate cross section, a top member secured over said tension men'iber, end portions of said top member entering the, tension member and secured to end portions thereof, and a separate spring seat member engaged with each end portion of the tension member of the bolster.
