TOY.
Application filed September 12, 1927. Serial No. 218,901.;
This invention has to do generally with toys, and is more particularly concerned with toys of the type characterized as a ointed figure mounted on a handle rod and adapted to be put through contortive movement through manipulation by the operator.
It may be considered as among the principal objects of the invention to provide a toy of this character which is capable of easy, cheap manufacture, yet one which is sufiiciently sturdy to withstand somewhat abusive manipulation by a child, and one which is ca pable of particularly amusing movements.
An embodiment of my inventionincludes F a handle rod and a jointed figure applied to one end of the rod. One or more of the movable elements are pivotally connected to the rod in a manner to oscillate about the point of connection, a link connecting this element to an operating member which slid-able along the rod. Consequently reciprocation of the operat ng member causes oscillation of said movable element, the construction being such that the element is capable of oscillating completely from side to side oi. the rod. This makes it possible for the jointed figure to turn a complete somersault and since the other. jointed elements are partially uncontrolled in their movement, a very amusing effect is gained.
Other novel features will be set out in connection with the following detailed specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved y;
Figs. 2 and 3 are side elevations of the toy showing the figure moved to different positions; and
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4- 1 of Fig. 2.
Numeral 1O designates a handle rod carrying a head 11 at one end and a hand-grip 12 at the other. An operating member in the form of a sleeve 13 is mounted on rod 10 for reciprocation or play therealong between head 11 and grip 12.
A jointed figure, generally indicated at 14,
0 sired character, I have here shown a representation of a man made up of body portion 15 to which legs 16 are pivotally connected at 17 and to which arms 18 are pivotally connected at 19. The opposite ends of arms 18 are pivotally connected at 20 to head 11.
A link 21 extends between operating member 13 and arms 18, the point of connection 22 between the link and arms being at a point intermediate pivots 19 and 20, but preferably closer to pivot 20 than to pivot 19.
\Vhile the link may be of any desired charactor and may be applied to the arm members 18 and operating member 13 in any desired manner, I have shown apret'erredconstruc= tion and mode ofapplication. Thus, link2l is made in the form of a yoke, the cross bar thereof extending between and through arms 18, and the lower end of yoke arms 24 i being bent inwardly at 25 through sockets or apertures 26 in member 13. Pivotal connections are thus made between bar 23 and arms 18 and between ends 25 and member 13, bar
23 and ends 25 being substantially axially parallel.
For purposes of easy and effective connection, the yoke may be made of somewhat sockets 25.
It will be readily apparent that this toy is of a simple, sturdy nature and yet one which is capable of giving very amusing effects.
It will be understood the drawings and description are to be considered merely as illustrative of and not restrictive on the broader claims appended hereto, for various changes in design, structure and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of said claims.
I claim:
1. In a toy the combination of a handle rod, a figure embodying a plurality of pivotally connected men'ibcrs, one of said members being pivotally connected to the rod near one of its ends whereby said one member is adapted to oscillate about its point of connection with the rod, an operating member mounted on the rod for reciprocation longitudinally therealong, and a link connection between said operating member and. said one member and applied directly to said one member whereby reciprocation of the operating member oscillates said one member.
2. In a toy the combination of a handle rod, a figure embodying a plurality of pivotally connected members, a pair of said members being )ivotally connected to the rod, one at each si e thereof, near one of its ends whereby said members are adapted to oscillate about their points of connection with the rod and thereby carry the figure completely from side to side of the rod, an operating member mounted on the rod for reciprocation longitudinally therealong, and a common link connection between said operating member and said pair of members whereby reciprocation of the operating member oscillates said pair of members, said connection embodying a yoke whose cross bar extends between and is applied to said pair of members and. whose legs extend into pivotal connection with the operating member, said yoke being shaped and positioned to clear the rod throughout movement of the operating member.
3. In a toy the combination of a handle rod, a figure en'ibodying a plurality of pivotally connected members, one of said members being pivotally connected. to the rod near one of its ends whereby said one member is adapted to oscillate about its point of connection with the rod, an operating member mounted on the rod for reciprocation longitudinally therealong, and a link connection between said operating member and said one men'iber between its points of pivotal connection with the rod and another member of the figure whereby reciprocation of the operating member oscillates said one member.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 27th day of August, 1927.
