UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEM SETTING.
Application filed January 2, 1929. Serial No. 329,812.
T his invention relates to an improved construction of gem setting; and has for its object to provide a setting of this character formed of sheet stock, the body portion 01" the setting being provided with side walls and a bottom wall, the bottom wall having a central opening with its marginal stock extending into the body on an incline to wards the side walls thereof forming a gemrecciving seat.
A further object of the invention is to cause the inturned edge of the stock that tlorms the seat to lie against the inner surface of the side walls and perforate this in wardly extending stock for the purpose of providing drain holes for water, acid and other tinish discoloring fluids which may have been trapped in the space beneath this seat portion.
The invention further consists in forming this setting of a solder-filled sheet stock so that when the edge of that portion extending into the body from the bottom wall lies against the side walls it will be only ncccs sary to heat the setting to cause the solder to tlow from this contacting edge and secure the same to the inner surface of the side walls.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features oi. construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 shows my improved setting with a gem mounted therein.
Fig. 2 shows one form of blank cut from sheet stock from which my improved setting may be formed.
Fig. 3 shows the blank with its bottom wall ['Wt'WltlGll with a central opening with its marginal stock carryilig the closely spaced perforalions extending into the lmdy.
Fig. l; shows the edge o'l. this inlurned stock as turned outwardly on an incline to lie against the inner surface of the outer wall.
I 5 a sectional elevation showing a gem resting on the inclined seat portion of the setting with the free edge of the side wall turned inwardly over the gem to bind the same to its seat.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged section of the setting.
Fig. 7 shows another of the many forms into which this setting may be swaged or shaped.
It is found in the practical construction in gem settings of this character, of advantage to blank a setting from sheet stock, punch out the center of the blank and then punch a plurality of closely spaced holes in the stock about the center opening, to then draw the blank up into cup farm and turn that portion of the marginal stock about the center opening which carries the drain holes to project inwardly into the body portion and spread the edge of this inturncd portion of the stock so that it will bend at the pointwhere the stock is weakened the most, which is on the center line thru the holes, so that the edgeof the stock will lie against the inner face of the side walls to form an inclined rigid seat for the gem. In some instances, the edge of this stock may be soldered to these side walls and the holes may be caused to serve the double purpose of weakening the stock to insure its ready bending and spreading at the desired point, openings thru which water or discoloring pickling acid may drain to prevent injuring the finish of the setting; and the following is a detailed description ofthe present embodiment of this invention and showing one construction of setting by. which these advantageous results may be accomplished:
With reference to the drawings, 10 designates one of many shapes of blanks from which my improved setting may be formed, the same having a central opening 11 and a plurality of closely spaced holes 12 formed in the stock aboutthis center opening. This blank is then drawn up into the form best illustrated in Fig. 3 having side walls 13 and the stock of the bottom portion about the central opening 11 being turned inwardly into the body at substantially a right angle to the bottom wall 14, the holes 12 in practice, serving to weaken the stock of this inturned portion, the weakest pointnaturally being along a center line 15 thru the holes and the edge portion 16 is then turned outwardly or spread so that this edge portion will set on an incline with its edge lying against the inner face of the side walls 13 thereby providing a rigid seat 17 upon which the under side of the gem 18 may rest. These holes perform a double function, first. they weaken the stock so as to insure'its bending at the proper place which is on a line thru the center of these openings; and second, these openings serve as a convenient means of draining the chamber beneath the inclined seat portion so that the pickling acid,
and also to provide water and other objectionable fluids may be readily washed out and removed from the setting thereby preventing subsequent discoloration of the finish.
The upper edge 19 of this setting is preterably beveled to permit its being more readily turned over the edge of the gem 18 to securely bind the gem in position against its seat. In other instances, this edge may be serrated or notched to improve the appearance of the gem, if desired.
It is found in practice that in some instances, it is of advantage to solder the edge of the inclined seat portion to the inner surface of the side walls to obtain a perfectly til-n1 and rigid seat, in which case the sheet stock from which the blank is constructed may be solder tilled so that when the setting is formed into shape with its inclined seat portion lying against the inner surface of the side walls it will be only necessary to subject the setting to heat which will cause the solder in the stock to flow out and so automatically secure this edge to the side wall.
Settings of my improved construction may be swaged or termed in any desired shape or outline to receive diii'erent sh apes of gems.
' lhe foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims,
I claim:
1. A gem set-ting comprising a body portion having a side wall and a bottom wall the bottom wall having a central opening with its marginal stock formed with a continuous or unbroken edge and extending into the body portion substantially parallel with the side wall. for a short distance and the edge portion of this stock then extending from this inturned portion outwardly on an incline to rest with a continuous contact against the side walls and term a rigid seat for the gem, the free outer edge of the side wall being adapt ed to be bent ini'l 'dly over the edge oi" the gem, the inturned stock being provided with openings therethrough.
2. A gem setting crnnprising abody formed of sheet stock with side walls and a bottom wall. the latter wall having a central opening with its marginal stock torn'ied with a COHt-iliUOUS or unbroken edge portion and extendin into the body portion an d having an inclined portion engaging said side walls forinin g a gem scat, said marginal stock being pierced intermediate the bottom and side walls.
A gem setting comprising abody termed oi sheet stock with side walls and a bottom wall, the latter wall having a central. open ing with its marginal stock extending for short distance straight into the body or at substantially a right angle to the bottom wall thereof and then extend on an incline towards the side walls il orlning a gem seat, the inturned stock being pierced at intervals about its circumference at the junction of the inclined and straight portions.
4. A gem setting comprising a body formed of solder filled sheet stock with side walls and a bottom wall. the latter wall having a central opening with its marginal stock extending for a short distance straight into the body or at substantially a right angle to the bottom wall thereof and then extend on an incline towards and being soldered to the side walls forming a rigid gem seat, the inturned stock being provided with a plurality of closely spaced holes about its circumference at the junction of the inclined and st ai ght portions.
In testimony whereof I afii); my signatnm.
FRANK E. FARNI-IAM.
