COMBINATION Pl'fTTY KNiFE AND PAINT SCRAPER.
Application filed December 27, 1928.
My invention relates to hand tools and more particularly to a combination putty knife and paint scraper.
An object of the invention is to provide a novel form of holder adapted for fitting engagement over the working edge of a putty knife, said holder being shaped to rece ve and yieldingly hold the scraping or cutting blade in place.
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder in which the scraping or cutting blade is freely removable therefrom without remrwing the holder from its fitting engagement over the working edge of the putty knife, and in which the holder, to gether with the scraping or cutting blade, can be freely removed as a unit where and when it is desired to use the putty knife as such.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a combination hand tool for glaz ers and painters use, the parts of which can be separately manufaetureiil and separately sold. or if desired. sold together; one in which the holder, if SQPfil'tliQlj' sold, can he used on or in connection with all conventional forms of putty knives; and one in which, when used. as a paint scraper, is enhanced in effectiveness due to the flexibility of the putty knife blade.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will he hereinafter set forth.
.ln the drawings, wherein like reference charm-leis denote like or corrcspmnling parts,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the combination tool;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view showing the relation of the holder to the working edge of the putty knife blade;
llig. is an edge view of the assembly illustrated in Fig. 2, and
Fig. l is an edge view of the tool used as a, paint scraper.
In the embodiment of the invention selected for lllllflfllflOH, a putty knife of conventional form is shown. lt comprises (see Fig. 1) a blade of metal, preferablyflexible tool steel, and a handle 11 fat Wired to the shank 12 of the blade by rivets or other fastening means. 7
"n; the working edge of the blade 10 a holder let for the scraping or cutting blade Serial No. 328,726.
15 is removahly fastened. Said holder 14 is preferably formed in one piece. As illustrated in Fig. 3 said holder 14rcompriscs an intermediate part 16 upon the opposite sides or faces of which pockets 17 and 18 are formed. The pocket 17, which is adapted to receive the scraping or cutting blade 15, is preferably formed by bending the one piece sheet metal stock upon itself, shaping it to the inner end or guard formation as indicated at 15), and flaring its free edge away from the intermediate portion thereof as indicated at 20. Thus shaped, the blade 15 is yieldingly held within said pocket 17 and may be easily and quickly removed or replaced by ed gewise or lateral slidingmovement.
'lhe opposed or second pocket 18 is similarly formed. The sheet metal stock is reverscly bent upon itself and at or near its opposite edge it is inbent as indicated at 21 to provide a bearing surface. Such bearing surface, with the putty knife blade inserted in said pocket 18, engages said blade and by its engagement yieldingly holds the holder 1 in place. The open end pockets, it will. be noted, open oppositely. If desired, means may be provided to prevent the accidental edgewise movement of the scraping blade.
A combination putty knife and paint scraper thus characterized is advantageous in that the flexibility of the putty knife blade (see Fig. 4:) is utilized to advantage when the tool is used as a paint scraper; it is also advantageous in that both the scraping blade and the putty knife blade may be separately removed from engagen'ient within the pockets of the holder as desired; and it is further advantageous in that the scraping or cutting blade (preferably a new or discarded safety razor blade) may be inserted or slipped into the pocket 17 without exerting pressure on or even near itscutting edge. When used as a paint scraper, moreover, the greater the pressure on the putty knife and the greater the pressure on the scraping blade, the. more firmly are such parts seated and held in their respective holder pockets.
While I have described my invention in detail in its present preferred embodiment, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art after understanding my invention, that various changes and modifications may be made therein Without departing from the spirit or scope thereof. I aim in the appended claims to cover all such modifications and 5 changes.
lVhat I claim is:
1. In a hand tool, the combination, of a putty knife, a scraping blade, and a holder for said scraping blade removably carried 10 by the working edge of said knife.
2. In a hand tool, the combination of a flexible blade provided at one end with a non-cutting edge, a holder provided with opposed pockets WltlllItOllG of which said 15 non-cutting edge is adapted to be reinovably held, and a sore ping or cutting blade carried In testimony whereof I hereunto ailix my signature.
HERMAN ROTHERMEL.
