Description

. BRAMBAQ'K MUSIC-RACK FOR UPRIGHT PIANOFORTES. No. 170,619, Patented Nov. 30,1875.
' a W l W 1 R l U m In II||||| m UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE STEPHAN BRAMBAOH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y,
IMPROVEMENT IN MUSIC-RACKS FOR UPRIGHT PlANO-FORTES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,619, dated November 30, 1875; application filed October 8, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHAN BRAM'BACH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Desk Attachment to Upright Pianos, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents a front view, and Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical transverse sections, of m y improved desk attachment, representing the same, respectively, in closed and open position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has reference to an improvement in upright-piano cases, by which not only a more convenient and elegant-support forthe music books or sheets is obtained, but also a more powerful tone of the piano emitted.
The invention consists of a music desk or stand, which is applied to the central front part of the case, and so arranged as to be thrown either into inclined position or locked into the front of the case, as hereinafter described. V
A hinged base strip, with extension-legs, supports the music placed on the desk.
In the drawing, A represents the upper front part of an upright-piano case, and B the music desk or stand, which is arranged at the central part of the same, and ornamented to correspond with the surrounding parts of the case. The desk B is hinged at its upper edge to the case-front, to be swung in outward direction into inclined position.
It fits flush into the front when not in use as a desk, and may be locked in this position by a spring-catch or other suitable locking dev1ce, a.
The desk may be provided with a button for swinging it out, or a spring or other device, b, may be employed for producing the forward springing of the desk as soon as the locking device is released.
The desk B is held in inclined position by folding legs 0, which are fitted into side recesses ot' the desk, and applied to a strip, D, hinged to thelower edge of the desk. The strip D has a raised rim or edge, 01, and serves for placing the music book or sheets thereon, forming a support for the music when the legs are placed against the case-front in position to support the desk. The strip forms the rigid base part of the desk at the required angle to the same in a manner analogous to the stand in square and grand pianos.
The music book or sheet is held by the desk attachment at such height that the music may be read easier than in the present inconvenient position on the cover immediately above the key-board.
A main advantage of the deskconsists, further, in the opening produced at the front part, through which the sound may issue without obstruction, and the tone of the piano be brought out more powerfully than heretofore without requiring the lifting of the top of the case.
For closing the desk the legs are folded back onthe same, so that the strip forms an extension of the desk, and looks with the same into the front of the case.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The swinging desk or stand at the front of an uprightpiano case, provided with a hinged basestrip and extension legs for supporting jointly the music-book and holding-desk in inclined position, substantially as specified.
STEPHAN BRAMBAOH.
