. such a-machine ismaterially improved 'andA the mechanism more compact and flexible to operate'. "These land other objects and' ad-- vantages of my invention will, however,h`ere inafter more fully appear.
In the ,accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration one embodimentwhich myinv'entionmay assume in practice. A
Fig. 1 is a; planview partially in section of amining machine of the .flexibly fed type.
Fig. 2 'is a sideele'vution, partially in section,oFig.1 -.1
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view showingthe machine in operation inaroom.
Fig. g1 is a section online H of Fig. 1-
- In 'this illustrative construction I have shown a mining mach-ine of the room and pillartype comprising a casingl slidable o n its bottom 2 on -the mine bot-tom and movable lat- .ferally by means offeeding means'nincluding advance and receding flexible feeding portions, herein` flexible feeding members 3 and 4 in the forml of wire ropes orcables, and hav- A ing a cutter bar 5 rigidly secured within said machine f frame provided with an endless cutter bit carrying cutter chain 6. The feediiign'ieans and -the cutter chain are driven from a suitable motor 7, indicated by dot-'v 40 'ted lines in Fig. 2, which is controlled by suitable' controlling and' .reveising mechanism, generally designatedrthrough driv ing connections hereinafter 4de scribed,..afnd
connected to a Afeed operating member and a take-up member, herein in the form of drums 9 and 10, and to a cutter chain 'drieing sprock-- et 11 rotatablein bearings on a vertical-axis beneath the rear end of themachine frame..
In describing my improved construction I will firstv describe the cutter chain driving mechanism. Itvvill be noted that the armature-shaft oft-he motor A 7 is provided with a sp'ur pinion 12 which in turn meshes with a spur gear' 13 jou'rnaled on a stud 14 suitably carriedlby the frame 1.A Suitably driven .by

vertically disposed stud 17 on the rear en'd of f the machinefframe. The gear 16 'is adapted to be connected at willto the sprocket 11 by means-of a.elutch mechanism 18-` underthe control of -a shipper mechanism 19 'operated by a lever 20. su1tably carri ed on the advancooperating with this n'lechanismlis the -feeding 'mechanism'. This mechanism is herein connected to and driven by' an upstanding sleeve 21 rotatable with the bevel gear 16, the Y' same being connected by a semi-permanent clutch 22 toa sleeve. 23 having aworm24 formed thereon, the sleeve 23 in turn' being suitably journaled on a'langed bearingsleeve 25 and in' bearings, not-shown, carried within a removable cap member-. 26 carried by thev ftopof the machine frame.
v I This worm 24 meshes with a worm gear 27 disposed on a transverse horizontal axis..- As shown, the
operated through suitable toggle mechanism 36 by a lever 37 carried on the advancing side of the machine frame. The bevel pinion 3l in turn meshes with a bevel gear 38 suitably journaled on a longitudinally disposed hori- Zontal shaft 39 and which is adapted to be connected thereto by a jaw clutch 40 operated by a suitable shipper mechanism 41. Keyed 'to Athe shaft 39 is a spur pinion 42 which in turn meshes with an internal gear 43 suitably secured to the Winding drum 10. Itwillbe noted that this drum 10 is suitably journaled on a longitudinally' disposed horizont-al axis on the As shown, the bevel pinion '32 which is oppositely disposed With respect to the shaft. 33, meshes with a bevel gear 45 adapted to be connected to a shaft 46, parallel with the shaft 39, by means of a jaw clutch 47 similar to the Vclutch 40. This shaft 46 drives a spur pinion 48 which in turn meshes with an internal gear 49 suitably secured to the winding drum 9 suitably journaled on the machine frame on an axis parallel with the axis of the drum 10.
The exterior peripheries of the internal gears l 43, 49 are provided with friction surfaces 51 and 52 under the control of brake bands 53 and 54 operated through suitable .controlling mechanism by levers 55 carried on opposite sides of the machine frame, one of which 1s shown 1n Flg. 2.`
Cooperating with A the feeding mechanism and engaging the drums 9'and 10 are the ilexible feeding members or cables 3 and Hereinthe machine is shown adapted to cut from right to left and in this disposition of parts it will be noted that the advancing cable 3AeX- tends from beneath the drum 9 around a hori zontally disposed guide roll 56 and forward towards the front end of the machine and around an idler-sheave 57 laterallyr to the lefthand rim, While the receding cable extends from beneath the drum 10 laterally to the right hand rib. p l
In the operation of my improved construc- Ation the machine is preferably, when unloaded from its transport truck, not shown., brought up to the face at the right hand rib to the position indicated in full lines in Figi 3. The advancingcable 3 is then connected to the left hand rib toen anchor jack A, While thereceding cable 4 is connected-to the right hand rib and an anchor jack B. The clutch 18 is then thrown in, thereby rotating the cut- .ter chain and then by .throwing in the aw clutch 40 and throwing out the jaw clutch thrown in and the machine maybe straight- A cned upand then cnt transversely across the face of the room as indicated by the next dotted line lposition at the left, the drum 9 winding in the cable 3 While the drum 10 pays out the cable 4 under control of brake band 53. When the machine reaches the left hand rib it may be inclined relative to the rib and backed out by suitable manipulation of the clutches 40and 47 and the brake bands 53 and 54 ina Well known 'manner and returned to its truck at a high or haulage speed. During the entire cutting operation the speedl of the drums 9 and 10 is entirely under the `control of the planetary change speed mechanism 30. In the operation of my improved mechanism, it will be noted that by means of the clutch mechanism 18 the cut-ter chain driving sprocket 11 may be rotated or caused to remain idle While the motor is rnnning. Attention is also directed to the fact that by suitable manipulation of the lever 37 controlling the brake band35'it is possible described one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.`
