This invention relates to cleaning devices of the vacuum cleaner type and, while not restricted for such purposes, is particularly applicable to the cleaning of small portable ob'ects such as blackboard erasers.
lleretofore it has been customary to move the suction applying means over the object to be cleaned.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a stationary vacuum cleaning device adapted for cleaning small portable objects.
' Another object of the invention is to provide a rigid support (preferably temporary only) for a vacuum cleaner of customary portable construction.
A further object is to provide a cleaning attachment of short length adapted to be rigidly attached to the vacuum cleaner.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the accompanying drawings and the following specification.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated on the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the device as a whole mounted on a bench.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the support for the vacuum cleaner.

As shown on the drawings: The vacuum cleaner proper consists of the usual casing 1 which houses the electric motor which drives the suction fan in the fan casing 2. The fan casing is provided with the customary inlet or suction orifice 3 and outlet orifice 4. To the latter is attached a fabric dust collecting bag 5. As shown, the casing 1 is provided with a laterally extending handle 6 in which is the control switch 7. The construction above described is that of an ordinary type of portable vacuum cleaner. My invention consists in providing a simple form of rigid support without changing the construction of the vacuum cleaner proper. For this purpose I provide a base or support 8 formed at the ends with upstanding flanges 9 and 10. The upper margins of these flanges are curved to fit the casing 1 when the latter rests thereon. To hold the casing in place a strap 11 is employed which may conveniently be secured to the support intermediate its ends by screws 12 which also serve to attach the support to a bench or other part 13. This strap will not alone serve to prevent the casing from rotating or axial movement except by friction. To provide a more positive grip on the casing other holding means should be provided. A convenient method is to take advantage of the peripherally arranged ventilation holes 14: in the casing as engaging means for lugs 15 on the flange 10. The brush attachment consists of an annular ring 16 having on one side internally arranged lugs 17 adapted to engage complementarily formed lugs exteriorly arranged on the inlet orifice 3 of the vacuum cleaner. On the other side of the ring 16 is a circular brush 18 held in position by nails 19. This brush is formed with a number of holes 20 for the passage of air laden with the dust stirred up by the action of the brush bristles on the article to be cleaned. The operation of the device as a whole is illustrated in Figure 5, where a blackboard eraser 21 is shown in contact with the brush for cleaning purposes. It has been found that the felt blocks 22, of which the cleaning faces of such erasers are composed, tend to become shiny through use. This shiny surface, however, disappears as the eraser is scrubbed backwards and fowards over the brush 18. r
If it is desired to use the vacuum cleaner as an ordinary portable device it isnecessary only to uncouple the brush attachment and connect the desired form of attachment and loosen the strap 11.
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not propose limiting the patent granted hereon, otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
A device of the kind set forth comprising a motor and a casing, a base having upstanding flanges adjacent each end, such flanges being curved to fit and contact with the motor casing, a strap secured intermediate its ends to said base at a point between said flanges adapted to encircle the said casing and hold the latter on said base, said strap securing means also effective to secure said base to a support.
