UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH R. WIEAND, OF ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEATING-DRUMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,395, dated June 6, 1876; application filed May 1, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JpsEPH R. WIEANI), of Allentown, Lehigh county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Heater, of which the following is a specificatiou:
In the accompanying drawing, Figures 1 and 2 represent vertical, longitudinal, and transverse sections, respectively, 011 the line C C, Fig. 2, and X X, Fig. 1, of my improved tions of my improved heater, of which one or more may be arranged, as required, the section being connected by top pipes B, having dampers (J, and by lower pipes D, that are thrown into use when the dampers are closed. The heater is connected with the heating-furnace by a suitable pipe, and the draft drawn directly through the upper pipes of the heater to the chimney when the fire is to be started, or when the heat of the same is notrequired.
Each section A is made in the shape of an oblong case, and divided by a transverse partition-plate, E, of horseshoe or inverted V- shape that does not extend entirely to the bottom of the heater, so as to leave openings, forming fines E, through which the fire-gases are drawn, when the damper of the connecting top pipe B is closed.
The hot gases pass from the furnace connecting-pipe downward along the outer fines E, and then around the lower part of the partition-wall E in the central flue, upward to the lower connecting-pipe D,which is arranged below the top part ofthe curved partition. The fire-gases pass then to the next section, following the same course until taken up by the chimney-pipe.
Each section A is provided with a bottom opening tube and cap a, through which the section may be cleaned from soot, ashes, 823C.
The heater may be made of cast or sheet metal, according to size, and furnishes large heating-surface for the effective utilization of the hot fire-gases during their passage through the fines of the section.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire. to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of sections A, pipes B D, and partitions E, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
