This invention relates to a combined'lapsiding gauge and support and has for its object to provide a device of this character adapted to be releasably secured to the frame of a building for supporting the lap-siding in position upon the frame so as to enable the workman to permanently nail the same thereupon and at the same time to form a gauge for properly spacing the siding in a uniform over-lapping relation with respect to a section of the siding previously secured upon the frame.
Another object is to provide means for easily and quickly removing the device from the frame after the siding has been fixedly secured permitting the device to be moved into a new position and providing means enabling the adjustment of the gauge to regulate the extent of over-lapping of the siding.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is strong and durable, efficient and reliable in performance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended. 7
Other objects and advantages reside in the special construction, combination and arrangement of the various elements forming the invention as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout the specification and in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation with parts shown in section and illustrating the manner in which'the device is used in practice F igure 2 is a front elevational view thereof, and

Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, I provide a supporting arm 5 having one end formed into a hook 6 disposed substantially at right angles to the arm and adapted to engage the bottom edge of a sec- 3 is a'detail of the gauge adjusting tion of siding 7 for the purpose of temporarily supporting the same againstthe rafter of a building so as to permit the siding to be permanently attached in position thereon.
The upper end of the arm is off-set in the 5F same direction at which the hook'extendswith its extremity 8 adapted to rest against the frame of the building when the'arm is disposed in a vertical position, thearm being of sufficient length so that the upper end will. 50 extend above the upper edge of the siding. The upper end of the arm is formed with an opening for receiving a nail or spike 9 extending through the inner surface of the end 8 for imbedcling within the frame. The portion of the opening adjacent the frame is reduced to prevent the head of the nail from being driven entirely tlierethrough. A driving pin 10 is also slidably arranged-within the opening with its inner end adapted to contact with the head of the nail and its outer end formed into a head 11 upon which a ham- -m'er blow may be struck for driving thenail within the' frame. An opening 12 extends transversely of the arm and at right angles to the opening carrying the nail, the opening" 12 extending through a portion of saidnail opening. One side of the pin 10 is formed with a longitudinally extending recess 13 forming a flattened surface on the pinintermediate its ends and terminating in shoulders 14. A pin 15 is arranged in the opening 12 so as to also have a portion thereof disposed within the nail opening and forming a stop engaging the inner shoulder 14 for limiting the outward movement of the pin 10.
At the lower end of the arm 5 is formed a lug 16 provided with a horizontally disposed opening for receiving the threaded end of a screw 17, the opening at one side of the lugv being countersunk permitting the head 18 of the screw to extend slightly therewithin. The head 18 is provided with a transverse opening 19 for slidably receiving a gauge rod 20 having one end formed into a hook 21 for engaging the bottom edge of the siding disposed immediately beneath the siding supported by the arm 5. The threaded end of the screw 17 carries a tightening nut 22 enabling the head of the screw 18 to be drawn inwardly toward the lug and forcing the upper end of the rod 20 in adjusted position against the lug, the tension of the nut preventing displacement of the rod.
It Will be a parent that the nail 9 may be driven into tie frame of the building for temporarily securing the arm thereto in a proper position for supporting the siding upon the hook 6 ready for the Workman to secure the same to the building. The rod 20 constituting the gauge is set'at the proper position so that the distance between the hook 21 engaging the lower siding and the hook 6 engaging the upper siding Will indicate the desired overlapping for each subsequent sid- 111 lkfter the section of siding has been fixedly secured the upper end of the arm carrying the nail 9 may be pried from the frame permitting the device to be moved into its subsequent position. It will be seen that the pin 10 may be freely moved in the nail opening sufficiently to permit the nail to be drawn inwardly of the arm Without entirely necessitating removal of the pin and in this manner the pin and nail are prevented from becoming separated from the device.
It is obvious that the invention is susceptible of various changes and modifications Without departing from the spirit of the same or the scope of the appended claim, and 1 accordingly claim all such forms of the invention to which I am entitled.
I claim:
In a combination lap-siding support and gauge, a supporting arm having a hook formed at one end said hooked end having an adjustable gauge extending therefrom, said arm having an opening extending through its opposite end, a nail retained Within said opening having its pointed end protruding from the arm, an elongated driving pin slidably arranged in the opening in driving engagement with the inner end of the nail, said pin having a longitudinal flattened portion with shoulders at each end of said flattened portion, and a pin extending transversely of the opening and engaging said shoulders whereby to prevent removal of the driving pin from the openlng.
