This invention relates to improvements in a combined check and picker stick guide, and guide for the throw of a shuttle.
An object of our improvement is to pro vide an attachment for looms 01 any standard type, as the Northrop loom, that is designed to be secured to the under side of the lay with the usual shuttle box located above and on the top of the lay. This attachment is for the purpose of bringing the picker stick to a stop by means of a gradually increased frictional resistance. This attachment provides a device to apply said resistance through the stick controlling the backward movement of the receiving picker, further, this attachment is to prevent the rebound of "the stickand attached picker, and elements vforcing the shuttle out of the box a distance by the aforementioned rebound.
The attachment, in general, comprises a plate that is secured to the under side of the lay, and another plate that is adjustably con nected to the first mentioned plate for providing a space between the plates and in which space the picker stick operates. This second plate is formed with an opening, and in this opening is located a spring actuated binder lever having its free end normally resting on the outer'face of the second plate, beyond the opening.

In our present construction, the binder lever acts on the stick as the shuttle is entering the box, thus assisting to check the shuttle and preventing the shuttle and stick from rebounding, and forcing out the shuttle some what. The present invention is confined solely to the construction-oi the picker stick heck and guide for the throw of the shuttle.
Further objects and nature of the invention will appear in the body of the description, with reference to the drawings and appended claims.

Referring to the drawings in detail:

The lower integral horizontal flanges 6 and 7 on the plate 3 are formed with elongated openings 8 and 8. 9 designates the second or outer plate which is formed with the horizontal flange portion 10 and the vertical portion 11. This outer plate is located on and adjustably secured to the flanges 6 and 7 of the plate 3 by means of the bolts 12 and 13 in the elongated openings 8 and 8. The opening 15 extends between the two integral flanges 6 and 7, which determines its length. This spring is coiled around the pin 1, as shown, and then extends forward to town the loop 26 and the free end 27. This loop bears against the outer surface of the binder lever '18 for applying pressure thereto. The tension of this spring is adjusted by applying a wrench to the fixed head and turning the same. l Jhen the proper tension on the lever 18 is obtained. the nut 22 is ti ht, ened. 29 is a piece of leather that is cured to the insideof the free end of the lever 18, for cushioning the blow when this lever returns to the dotted line position in Fig. 1. The face of the binder lever which comes in contact with the picker stick is not here shown as covered with any friction creating material, such as leather fibre, etc., but may be so covered, if desired. The usual lug strap is shown at 30 and the rocker foot construction for the picker stick at 81.
In operation, the shuttle is understood as having been thrown and is entering the shuttle boXQ. As it'entersthe shuttle box, it actuates. the picker stick. As the stick is moved rearwardly, it engages the gradually curved surface 18 of the binder lever 18, thus gradually checking the shuttle as well as the stick. This gradual checking of the stick and shuttle prevents any rebound of either the stick or shuttle and minir nice the front pressure of binder lever.
' By reason of this adjustment of the front plate on the slotted flanges 6 and 7, the space 15 may easily be set to compel the stick to travel in a straight line between the front Further by re son of adjustment of the rear plate, at each end, the stick and picker may be guided to throw the shuttle in a definite, and desired line. As the shuttle is projected into the box, the gradual inclined surface 18 operates to pinch the stick betweenthis surface and the inner surface 3 of the rear plate 3. By locating the picker check and guide below the lay 1, the accurate operation and guide of the stick does not depend on the dimensions of the usual slot in the lay through which the stick stick of the shuttle, and for preventing reboundextends. It will therefore be seen that we have provided a picker stick guide, and adjustment both'as to the width of the space and also direction that the "shuttle may be guided in its throw and asto varying the tension on the spring which actuates the binder lever inward against the picker stick and further,by adjustment of lever stud 21, greater resistance to rebound may tained. f
By varying the position of the pin 21 in the slot 8" and the position of the bolt 18,

What we claim is:
1. In a picker stick check and binfdi ng device, said device comprising spaced members to form @StlCk receivingpassagewa gone of said members being adjustable and having an opening therethrough, a spring actuated check and binder lever in the open ng and extending into the said passageway, one end of said leverbeingpivotally connected to one of the said members of the device, an adjustable pin on which the said lever is mounted, a sprin g for varying the tension of the binder lever, for further varying the resistance of the binder and more securely holding the stick'againstrebound and forcing the shuttle out of the box, said lever being formed with a curved portion which extends into the passageway and with whichcurved portion the stick engages stick to rest and for retaining the picker in a definite p osition prior to the throw ing of the stick. 2. In a picker stick binder device for looms having a stick receiving passageway formed in the lay, one wall of thepassageway being adjustable and having an opening, means for adjusting the wall, a pivotally mounted spring actuated stick binder lever formed with a curved part that is located in the said opening and passageway, extending outwardly through the opening and normally resting on the outer side of the adjustable wall, the curved part of the said lever and the spring operating to gradually reduce the rate of motion of the shuttle through the resistance applied to stick and is threaded thru the hub 32 i to gradually bring the picker a part of the lever I r lever in the opening,

3. A picker stick checking device comprising an adjustable picker stick receiving passageway, a wall of the passageway having an opening, a flange on the wall, a stud bolt adjustably secured to the flange, a binder lever for the picker stick pivo-tally mounted 011 the stud bolt and extending into the passageway, a spring on the stud bolt having one end secured to the said bolt and its other end engaging the outer side of the lever; said device being located below and secured to the lay part of the loom.
In a loom, a combined check device for the picker stick and shuttle, comprising a pair of spaced members that are secured to and below the lay for controlling the line of movement of the picker stick and for receiving the picker stick, the said stick extending upward through the lay and into the shuttle box on the lay, the construction, and arrangement being such that the movements of the stick and shuttle are simultaneously arrested, and means for adjusting one of the spaced members relative to the other for causing the stick to move in a straight line as desired and as described, said adjustable means comprising slotted flanges on one of the spaced members and flanges on the other member and means for securing the flanges together.
5. A picker stick check for looms comprising a pair of parallel members that are secured below the lay of the loom, and spaced from each other to receive the picker stick, and means for adjusting one of said members to vary the space between said members, whereby the movements of the stick will be in a straight line, a stick binder lever in said space, the adjustable member having an opening in which the binder is located, and means for varying the pressure of the binder on the stick.
6. A picker stick check device comprising two parallel spaced members, one of the members having upper and lower flanges, the upper flange having bolt receiving openings for attachment to the underside of the lay, the other member comprising a right angle piece which is adjustably secured to the lower flange of the said member and said other member having an opening, a stick binder and means for adjusting pressure of the binder on the stick.
7 A picker stick check comprising, in combination, a pair of spaced members, one of the members having an opening, a binder lever in the opening, a spring normally exerting pressure on the binder lever, an adjustable pivot pin for the binder for varying the lateral position of the binder to vary the frictional resistance exerted on the stick, one end of the spring being coiled around the pivot pin and attached to the pin, its other end engaging the binder lever, means for rotatably mounting the pivot pin on one of the members, means for securing the pivot pin, after the tension of the spring on the binder is determined and means for adjusting the member having an opening relative to the other member.
8. A guide for a picker stick comprising in combination, a pair of spaced plates, a perforated flange, with securing means, means for adjustably securing the plates to the underside of the lay of the loom, a binder lever for the picker stick, a pivot pin for the binder lever, means for laterally varying the position of the pivot pin of said lever to vary the checking efliect on the picker stic 9.
