FIRECRACKER COMBINATION Filed Oct. 25, 1929 Zlwuentm Thomas 6. H6 1 Patented July 22, 193i? THOMAS G. rirrr, or SEATTLE, wAsHrNG'roN I ,rrnncnaozna mummies I l Applicatiohfiled October 23, 1929. :Serial lie. 401,689;
This invention relates to p yrotechnics, and more particularl to mutation iant tubular firecrackers, with a plurality-of smaller firea crackers of'special construction and arrangeti'ment, held within the tube.
One object of the invention is to provide a structure which will furnish a series of detonations, and brilliant flashes of various plode separately, in sequence one after the l other, the first one to provide a loud detona- 2*; tion and to burst the tube retainer, and the others to explode following, and to display various colored flashes as well as separate detonations.
With these andother obj ccts as will further 2;" appear in the specification following, I have illustrated my invention by the accompanying drawing, of which: 7
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the device, with parts broken away, 30* 1 Figure 2 represents a plan in section taken on a line 22 of Figure l,
Figure 3 represents a sectional elevation with parts broken away and taken on lines 3-8 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 represents a sectional elevation with parts broken away, and taken on lines H of Figure 2. V
Like numerals on the different views and figures represent like parts.v
Numeral 5 represents the side walls of a tubular container, preferably formed of pasteboard for holding its shape, and yet to be readily broken into small fragments by I an explosion within the same. 6 is a bottom cap, and 7 a top cap, the caps are ordinarily held in position on the tube by friction, and
the structure resembling a giant firecracker,
and preferably so colored. 8, 9, 10 and 11 are smaller tubes for firecrackers packed within the container and each enclosing a determined charge of explosive of suitable composition for explosions nd various colors.
While I show the tubes of equal length for illustration in my drawings, yet the same may be varied to produce differences in the dot onati'ons, and toprovide differences in the display of the flashes-of the explosions.
In tube S I preferably place a bag. filled withan explosive of sutficientpower to shatter the outer tubular container, with a fuse 8" extending from theexplosive'matter'in a-bag 12, and out through-an opening-in the cap or cover 7 to any desired length, for ignition by a match in the usual way. i
The bag is preferably arranged and filled as specified in myLett-ers Paten't;1,258,596, and the same arrangement may be carried outeases; ems? ems f so far as practicable in the loading pl'ans o'f the other tubes, but-forthe purposes of the illustration herein they may be best shownas loaded with their several charges ofexplosive packed in their respective tubes and held'in' place by suitable wads as 13 any suitable.
material. v a The position of the explosive in tube-8 and the length of thefuse 8 are so arranged that the explosive in the bag 12wil1 befirst fired, V I
and the container thereby shattered In tube 9v is. preferably packed-explosive material whichwill produce a suitable detonation and provide two'distinct colors,
shown as 14 and-15. .In tube 10 is preferably packed explosive material which will produce a suitable detonation and three distinct colors, shown as '16, 17 and 17, and in tube 11 is preferably packed explosive material which will not only provide a loud detonation, but will display allthe colors of the rainbow,
shown as 18,19, 20, 21,22, 23 and 24. 1 These or ot-her colors may be produced by chemicals suitable for providing the colors separated or I blended to substantially produce the effects desired. r 1
' The charges in the firecracker tubes are fired by suitable fuses 26, 27 and 28 extends ing therefrom out through a central opening in the cap 7, and all wrapped together by a thin cover 29, to form the appearance of one large fuse from a giant firecracker. The fuses from all of the firecrackers are ignited at the same instant but the time of the explosions of the several charges in the different tubes is regulated by the positions of the; charges in tubes 9 and 10 so that 9 will be discharged with its two colors following the bursting of the first tube 8, and next will be exploded tube 10 with its three colors, all followed by the finalexplosion of the tube 11,
with its seven or other varied colors.
In the drawings for illustration,the charges In tube 11 extend the length. 9" he tube, but when in practice the charges "are so packed,
I provide the tube with a slower f u-sc,'so--tlrat' its contents will not be consumed and the fire reach the charges in thetube 11' till after the other tubes haveexploded, or the several ingredients in tube ll may, be reduced in quantity to require a smaller space, and so be arranged with longer fuse to prolong the time for the exploslon as desired.
In order. to simplify the drawings I have shown but a single fuse for each of the firewith the accompanying detonation, and the following detonations andvariety of colors,
furnish a brilliant pyrotechnic displayeithcr by day or night, and the weight ofv the COD}? bined firecrackers enclosed in the large con.- tainer tube, enables the operator to project the device much higher inthe air than if-t he firecrackers were used separately.v
Having describedlmyinvention, I claim as novelfor Letters Patent:
1. An imitation giant firecracker, with a container tube, capson the ends ofthe tube,
a plurality of firecrackers packed into the tube, fuses extending from the firecrackers through the top cap on thetube-and held together with a-wrapper to be ignited together, the charges in the firecrackers with relation to their fuses so that they will be fired successively.
2. An imitation firecracker with anoutercasing and a plurality of) firecrackers held together in the casing,- fuses fromthe fire.-
crackers extending. from the cas-ing-and held together for firing simultaneously, the charge in one firecracker arranged to be first exploded to burst thecontainer, and the charges in the other firecrackers provided with: material for Various different colors- WIthKIDQZXQ$fOI firing the; other firecrackers successively in sequence, following the burst- 111g of the; container;
positioned- 3. In combination, a pyrotechnic structure, with a container tube in imitation of a giant firecracker, a plurality of firecrackers held in the container with the fuses from the firecrackers wrapped together and extending from the container to resemble one large fuse for a giant firecracker and to provide for the ignition of all the fuses simultaneously, explosive charges in the firecrackers for causing detonations and flashes of various color.s,th e charge in one firecracker arranged to be first exploded and of sufficient power to shatter the container, the remaining firecrackers arranged to explode successively and the number ofcolors from the firecrackers provided by suitable material for increase as they explode, one after the other in sequence.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
