YVFISS AND ADOLLF NEEDELMAN, F PHILADELPHA, PENNSYLVAWIi Sen? ASSGNOR T0 BGSE VTEISS, DF PHXLADELPHIA, FENNSYLVANM B TEING- AND MASSAGING WITTEN' Application ined iuiy e,
@nr invention relates to new and useful improvements in a imthing' and massaging mitten, and has `for its primary object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective 1 device of this character which may be utilized as a washing cloth and so fitted to the hand that it will not rumple np while in use and therefore will 'lways present an extended surface instead of a restricted one as is etten the case with an ordinary wash cloth.
Lino-ther object of the invention is to proide a bathing mitten having a compartment extending over the fingers and thumb `5 and the mejor portion oic the palm of the hand to hold a cake of soap or other washing medium.
i further object of the invention is to provide a bathing and massaging mitten so constructed as to produce massaging elements consisting of a plurality of parallel spaced rued or pleated strips arranged transversely of the front portion ot the mitten overlying the palm, thumb and iingers and xed to the wail producing the pocket or soap chamber.
fi still further object of our invention is to provide means for retaining the mitten on the hand against accidental displacement, said means preferably being in the form of elastic webbing located on the back portion of the wrist only.
Another object of our invention is to provide a bathing or massaging mitten of Turk ish toweling or other similar cloth.
lilith these ends in view, this invention eonsists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter' set e fort-l1 and then specifically designated by the claim.
ln order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, we will. leseribe its construction in detail referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings iorining a part of this application, in which:-
Fig is a perspective View of .f1 lisjithing so or u'i-.issaging witten @instructed in fccordembodied, particular reference being had to i Figures l to 3 inclusive, 6 represents the bathing and massa ing mitten as a whole, comprising e back and a front 8, each inclnding a combined .finger and palm section, a wrist section, and said parts are sewn together along their contiguous ed 'es forming a seam 9 but leavinif the en open at the wrist for insertion of the users hand.
.fi mensili-:ry section or panel l0 comprising a o; Lined palm and linger section 11- and e tf -umh section i2 and this panel over,- lies the front portion of the mitten and is sewn thereto preferably et the same time that the two mitten portions are sewn together and also preferably the edges of said panel are positioned to lie between the edges of the front and back portions of the mitten as lainly shown in Fig. 2.
rosswise ot the panel on the outer surface tl )reci are fixed a plurality of. pareliel gathered or pleated strips 13 which are preferably :formed from the saine goods as the other parts of the mitten and may be. produced by taking strips oi material, then doubling the two longer edges under the center of the strip, as shown in Fig. 3 and stitched through the three layers of the strip and the one layer forming the panel to sew the strip in place. During the sewing operation, the strips may be gathered so as to make the strip uneven or rough for massaging purposes.
As shown in Fig. l, some of the massaging strips cross the palm' of the mitten while some cross both the palm and the thumb and others only cross the linger section.
Eisposed across the rear or back portion of the mitten at'the Wrist section is an elastic band or strip of webbing 14 having only the ends attached so as to draw the Wrist portion into restricted sides `vhile permitting it to be readily stretched and opened for theY insertion of the users hand.
rl'he construction oi.r the mitten described above is such that it may be used or batliing or as a Wash cloth and because of the strip 13 arising from the general surface ot the mitten, it may be used in exhilarating the action oi the blood and therefore its utility as a message device is highly etticacious.
ln Figs. i 5, We have illustrated a modication of our invention wherein two pieces of cloth are utilized to form the front portion 16 and the back portion 17 of the mitten, each of said portions comprising a combined finger and palm section, a thumb section and a Wrist section, and these tryo portions are sewn together along their contiguous edges producing the inside seam 18.
Disposed across the iront portion is a panel 19 including a combined linger and palm section 20 and a thumb section 21 with the edges thereof attached to the edges of the mitten and preferably between the edges of the two mitten portions and at the time said portions are sewn together, as plainly shown in Fig. 5.
The panel being open along its inner edge. provides a mouth for the insertion of a cake of soap 22 indicated in dotted lines in Fig. i or other Washing medium into the pocket or soap compartment formed by said panel.
Similar to the other form of our invention, an elastic band or strip of elastic Webbing 23 is fastened to the Wrist of the mitten in order to hold it on the users hand and prevent accidental displacement thereof.
The cloth used for making mittens of this character is generally lrnown as Turkish toweling but it will be obvious that other fabrics might be used with similar or approximate results or if 'found desirable, the mitten portion itself might be niade of one material and the panel. or the panel and massaging strips of another material, such as, for instance, the Turkish towel.
ln actual practice a mitten is placed upon the hand of the user and the same wetted and rubbed over the body for cleansing purposes and if found desirable, soap may be rubbed on the outside thereof, or a cake of messes in shown, as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claim Without departing from the spirit of our invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what We claim as new and useful is:-
A bathing and massaging mitten comprising palm and back sections including thumb portions united at their marginal side and outer end edges, a panel including a thumb portion united to the palm section of the mitten forming a pocketiI the region of the finger and thumb parts of said panel and rows of folded pile fabric strips secured to tlie panel and extending transversely thereo ln testimony whereof, we have hereunto aiixed our signatures.
HERSH WEISS. A. NEEDELMAN.
soap or other Washing medium in any form may be placed in the pocket or soap compartment, so that when the mitten is rubbed over the body, a lather Will be formed which Will pass through the mitten material on the body being washed.
Of course we do not Wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herew
